We’re going cake tasting today! When I first started wedding planning, I wanted a “wow” cake … I was willing to spend $15 per slice for a Ron Ben Israel or Confetti Cakes.
Since then, the cake has lost much of its importance to me and I’ve decided that the cake is one of the areas where I’ll have to settle. The difference between $15 per slice and $7 per slice is over a $1000 for 150 guests…. and half the people don’t even notice or eat it (we will be having dessert in addition to cake, but no Viennese table).
Our appointment is with Carlos Bakery in Hoboken. His cakes are supposed to be delish and pretty reasonably priced ($4-$8 per slice). One way he saves you money is by making a 3-tier cake that serves around 75 people and then a sheet cake that serves the rest. It requires much less decorating, so it costs less per slice, and your guests will never know the difference.
Carlos Bakery makes all of the cakes used on the Sopranos, which is a good and a bad thing. I have to be honest, I hate the cakes on the Carlo’s Bakery website, they tend to be a bit, well… bridge and tunnel for lack a better word. But I know a few people who’ve gotten cakes there and they swear that he can make beautiful, classy cakes. Here are a few design inspirations (not from Carlo’s Bakery, the first two are by Cheryl Kleinman, my fave).

By Carlo’s Bakery (from theknot, so they’re classier than the ones on the Bakery’s site)

Love the lace design … but round and minus the daisies.

White-on-white is pretty, but I’m not sure if that’s what we want.
