Maiden Names

March 28th, 2006 @ 6:43 pm by Mrs. Bee

Wowsers. You have to read these articles about marriage by Leanne Bell. On the one hand she makes some outrageous and antiquated arguments, but on the other she presents a surprisingly enlightened view on topics like same sex marriages. Nonetheless the articles are well argued and an interesting read.

“Women who don’t take their husband’s surname after marriage are not sexually attracted to them and will likely be the one to initiate divorce.” (Maiden Names)

“Everything a woman values most in life can be directly attributed to her husband’s penis.” (His Penis)

In regards to “maiden names’ article it is so not true. I decided to keep my maiden name since there is no boys in my house hold to carry the name, no because i’m not sexually attracted to my hubby~ boo!

I like her writing and admire her willingness to be provocative. Thanks for the link.

those are actually quite intriguing articles… definitely provocative. and in response to Lisa, I’d like to know if she plans to pass on her surname to her children, or if her children will carry her hubby’s name… because in the latter scenario, keeping her maiden name would more or less be all for naught. though symbolically interesting.

i heard that there is a higher chance of divorce with women who hyphen there name… (that’s why a lot of celebrities get divorced)

food for thought.

In reposne to ‘alesse’ question, I’ve not decided if I will change my name after I have kids since they will be carrying my husbands’ surname. My sister kept her maiden name and she recently had a baby girl. Maya goes by her dad’s surname but that didn’t cause my sister to change her name to my brother-in-law’s surname. Plus, there is no confusion to whether Maya is her daughter at her day-care, social gathering and etc. :o)

I moved to Chile 10 years ago and I love the naming system here….

Maiden names don’t exist you never lose your name.
You are a born with a paternal-maternal last name and die with them.
My full name is Katherine R Guzman Gonzalez.
Guzman being my dads surname and Gonzalez my mums.
In most Spanish Speaking countries the mother’s surname is part of your name and comes after your fathers surname.
My children will have their given names, their father’s last name and then Guzman.
So if your name is mary and your dads surname is smith and mums was jones
you’ll be mary smith jones till you die.
If your husband is john Williams your kids will be baby Williams Smith.
Always paternal followed by maternal and those cant be touched.
