Do You Want To Make It Permanent?

April 11th, 2006 @ 11:29 am by Mrs. Firefly

To be honest, I knew it was coming. He sorta gave it away. Asked me for a few weeks if I wanted to go to a “nice” dinner. Mentioned that soon he could stay over at my parents house (in my room). So on Monday, April 11 when Mr. Firefly said he was going to walk home instead of taking the subway, I knew it! There’s no way he would take the subway carrying my ring!

It was a warm day so we went up on the roof for a glass (well… plastic cup) of wine. He looked especially handsome in his suit, so I started teasing him as I often did. He must be the cutest guy at his office, all the ladies must have a crush on him.

“But I’m just your’s right?” he asked.
“Of course, you’re just mine!” I replied.
“Do you want to make it permanent?”

… and out came the ring! He asked if I wanted him to go down on knee, but I was too busy giggling and hugging him. I don’t quite remember what I said, but I think he got the picture.

I can’t believe it’s been a year…

How did your fiance propose?

My fiance invited me on his boat for a final spin of the summer. I had not a clue in the world. I was reading a copy of UsWeekly in the back when he asked me what was bobbing in the water. I told him I thought it was a stick, and went back to reading. He asked me to keep my eye on it, which I thought was odd. Then, he asked me to take it out of the water so another boat would not hit it. To my surprise, it was a message in a bottle. I thought a child must have thrown it in the lake. But when I unraveled the pink ribbon on the white scroll it read: “Mary, will you marry me?” I screamed, and when I turned around he was on one knee with the ring. I was in shock for a month.

We went hiking in El Yunque Rainforest in Puerto Rico. He picked a trail that ended at a waterfall. When we finally reached it, there were so many people, he lost his nerve. So on the way back (which was all uphill) we stopped to rest. I noticed that his heart was pounding so I said to him, “Man, we’re out of shape!” He in turn says to me “Marry me?” and gets down on one knee and shows me the ring!! This was followed by a million hugs and kisses and then finally the answer “YES!!” I then asked him, “So was it the hike or your nerves that was making your heart pound?” He said it was both : )

We were on vacation in the Bahamas. As we walked along the beach one night after dinner, he started talking about how I was his best friend and how much he cared about me. Then he got down on one knee, pulled out the and asked, “Will you marry me?” I didn’t even notice the ring at first… only that he was on the sand. So my first thought was, “What the heck is he doing? He’s getting his pants dirty!!!” Then I realized what he just said and I started screaming, “Yes!”

The funny thing was that right before dinner, I was actually thinking about saying to him as a joke, “Hey, let’s get married!” But I was afraid he would think I was pressuring him, so I kept my mouth shut!

My dad’s side of the family had come up from Texas for Christmas, and it is a rare occasion that they stay at our house. I dearly wanted them ( being my grandmother, grandfather, uncle, aunt, and lil cousin ) to meet my first boyfriend, the same boy who I had fell head over heels for.
It was December 28th, during the brief repose amidst my Grandfather’s birthday Aaron asks if I wish to go on a walk. I am no fan of the cold, so I am quite relunctant. He, along with my father (who was in on the whole thing all along) convinced it would be nice and good exercise. So I hesistantly put on some clogs and walked out the door. Fresh, white snow covered everything making it seem like a confectioner’s masterpiece. We walked and walked around the neighborhood, he directed us towards a local park. (The whole way my teeth chattered even when tucked under his arm. :D) We arrived at the gazebo, and Aaron in his usual child-like enthusiasm exclaimed we should go visit the snowbound shelter. “UH-UH, no way. It’s home and to hot chocolate!” I argue, we stand in the cold debating and when I realize he’s serious I give in to his whim with a shrug. We sit and chat speaking of how we started out dating, how much we have been through, how he loves my family and me. This whole time he cuddles next to my shivering figure, which I take as him trying to keep me warm. However, I find him soon kneeling directly in front of me and fiddling with his winter coat. He speaks of how if he could he would spend forever in this time we have now. And out pops a cute lil box with a huge rock in it, I don’t hear or see it because I have my face in my hands and am crying. My barely audible “yes” has to be repeated and the ring was just a lil too big. But that moment is one my happiest and I can’t wait to make more.

I knew it was coming, which is why this is so bad:
We were in Kauai. It rained the first three nights. On the fourth, we had the luau (you know, you’re required to do a luau in Hawaii), and it was actually set up in this huge botanical garden. So we’re walking, I’m chirping away, pointing out all the trees and cool birds, and he’s, like, totally silent and kinda…moody, maybe? So, we come up to a bridge. He brightens up and says, “Let’s cross it.” Half-way across he says, “Wait up, I’ve gotta tie my shoe.” Now, everyone who knows my finace laughs at this part, but I go running off the bridge! I totally thought he’d pretend to throw me in! But when I turned around, he was standing there with his hands out and a shocked expression on his face. So, like the clueless chick in a bad movie, I point at him and say,”Ha! your shoe isn’t even untied.”
So, we walked the same path in a full circle and when we got back to the bridge…he says, “let’s cross it.” I’m thinking, ‘what is up with this bridge?!’ And then the lightbulb popped over my head. We got halfway across, but this time I didn’t run. He dropped to one knee (trend here?), and asked me. I had to say yes five times! He kept saying, “What?” Afterward, he told me had tunnel vision he was so nervous. Of course he was! I flubbed his whole plan! But it was so us. Especially the part where he actually did say one of us was going in the water if I dropped the ring between the bridge slats!

We were leaving our building each (I thought) about to go our separate ways to work. I looked across the street and noticed a white vintage Rolls Royce, but thought, “hey, this is NY, I gotta get to work!” Before I made it out the front door, Greg turned to me and said “this is your special day.” I was flabergasted, shocked, blown away and floored all at the same time. He told me that we were about to take a trip down memory lane to all of the spots in NYC that held special meaning for us. We got out of the car at each stop (my old apt, the bar we met, his old apt, magnolia bakery) and shared our memories with one another about the special time we had spent at each locale. The final stop was a spot we frequent and walk our doggie near the water, and that’s where he got down on one knee and proposed! The driver broke out some champagne and dropped us off at Balthazar for a decadent lunch. It was really pretty dreamy. I yelled at Greg for not “suggesting” that I dress up a bit more or put on some decent lipstick, but I really loved the surprise :)

After a fattening restaurant hopping (from a chocolate buffet to steaks) adventure, my FI suggested we take a walk around DC at the memorials. I suggested we stay and just walk where we were at near the restaurant-safety reasons. Even though it was our 6 months celebration, I just wanted to take a brisk walk and go home to finish up my midterms. But, Sweetie insisted on the memorials. So, fine, I caved in since it was a nice evening. And, he did promise me a while back that he would take us back so I can take more pics since I didn’t get to do so on our first date. (I’m a digital photo freak now.) He gotta win sometimes, right?
We arrived at the memorials, and suddenly my bladder decided to play games with me. “Oh well”, I thought to myself, “I’ll just bear it out since it might be a quick walk.” Just in case, I did a quick scan of the area for a potty. Anyway, as I distracted myself from my bladder with the beautiful views of the memorials, FI asked to sit down. I said “no” b/c 1. I wanted to take pics and 2. my bladder was about to explode. I finally admitted that I needed to go. FI’s reply, “Oh man…we’re in trouble.” His reaction…just priceless. (Imagine shock and nervousness combined in one expression.) Frantically, we searched for the nearest public restroom in the park. And, behold, a park-provided restroom up ahead. BUT, it was locked up!!! Do note, this was around 11:45PM. We found two park rangers, and one of them let us into their office’s bathroom. Such relief.
OK, back to me taking pictures. We sat down at the WWII memorial, but I was still amused with my digi-photos I’ve taken so far. So, FI decided that we move over to the Washington Monument. Evidently, that calmed my hyper self because there weren’t many good photo opportunities to take except the flags and the big huge monument. We finally sat on the new benches around the Wash. Monument–thank goodness ‘cuz my toes were hurting. I started rambling on about some sob stories that got me all welled up. Fast forward. FI was being his sweet self with some casual talk. While I was puckering up for a peck, FI decided to get on his TWO knees. Still puckered, I mumured, “Ah, what are you doing?”. FI went on about how we already have my parents’ blessing, how my family already know, etc. (This was a complete blur, but that’s what FI told me later.) I looked down, and there was a bright thing shining at me. FI, “*blurb of parent’s blessing*…Will you marry me?” Me, “Are you friggin’ kidding me? OMG! Now? Are you serious??? OMG! No way!” Sweet, “What? What did you say?” Yes, I actually said “No way!”, but I meant it as “This wasn’t happening.” Me, “Are you serious??? …yes.” FI, “Yes…will you marry me?” Me, shaking, “Yes…!” OH my, then a fountain of tears flowed from me. I was so happy!!! A dream that came true–I will spend the rest of my life with the love of my life.

My fiance proposed with salmon. Yes salmon as in the fish.

My fiance is a teacher so he was on spring break that week. On Wed (March 30) He said to come over at work because he ahd a surprise for me. When I got this apartment there were rose petals scattered outside the door and I could hear Canon D playing from inside the apartment. When I walked in the apartment was lite up with candlelight. Paul told me he had made me dinner with all my favorite foods, salad from this place down the street that I love, homemade French Onion soup with French bread, bacon (yes I love bacon), and a Mudslide. In the middle of the table was a dome and Paul said the main course was smoked salmon (yuuummm). After he helped me sit down (he bought a table cloth, table linens, seat cushions, and candelabras and had them all at the table) he lifted the dome and underneath it surrounded by a ring of salom was my ring. Underneath it he had written I

Nicol

In my husband’s words on our wedding site: “I ventured on a long road trip out to the west coast to pick up Nicol, and to visit my mother and father in Oregon. When we were at my father’s place it hit me. We both already knew that we wanted to spend the rest of our lives together and there was no reason to spend any more time on this dating thing. So on August 13th, I asked Nicol to marry me. It was very non-traditional. There was no ring at the time, no long trail of roses, nothing but her and me, and a simple question that changed our lives forever. Looking back, it’s very similar to the rest of our relationship; non-traditional, unique, and oh, so special. Several weeks later we went to pick out our rings together, one of the most special events ever. We found the perfect rings, and more importantly we got to share the moment together.”

And even better - we get to share our whole lives together! It’s amazing - as fun as dating is, being married is just SO beautiful and…indescribable! :)

He told me he was buying me a dust buster for my birthday. In reality he had something slightly cooler up his sleeve. Greg arranged with my boss 3 vacation days surrounding my 27th birthday weekend. He showed up at my apartment the night before the first day and told me to pack my bags for Jackson Hole because we had to be at the airport at 5:00 AM the next day! (Now I’ve been dreaming of going to Jackson Hole to ski for…Oh, about 7 years now!) That was the weekend’s first surprise. The second surprise came from the loose lips of the hotel clerk in Jackson Hole when she accidentally revealed that Jeff, Devon, John and Rebecca (brother and friends) would be joining us later that evening. That was okay though, because the biggest (and best) surprise of all was still in the works. The dinner!

This was no ordinary dinner though. This was a horse-drawn sleigh ride through the foothills of the Grand Tetons with a final destination of Solitude Cabin, where we would enjoy an inCREDible 4 course meal centered around the best prime rib ever! When I found out that the meal would be topped off by cheesecake I was excited. When I found out that the cheesecake came with a side of Greg on one knee I was, well, speechless. Unless you count jubilant sobbing as speech. Words can’t describe our happiness at that point.

Mechelle

Joe caught me totally by suprise. We have a fountain on our college campus and my room is right outside of it. At night, it is the most beautiful thing I can ever imagine. One night I was so bogged down with homework (I’m studying to be a teacher) that I totally forgot about our planned date that night. Around midnight, I heard this tapping on my window which is on the first floor. I had no clue what was going on and I didnt want to wake my roommate so I ignored it. The tapping got louder and louder. So I looked out the window and there was Joe and a couple of his frat buddies. They started singing (it’s a music frat) “The Way You Look Tonight” as Joe yelled at me for missing our date! I was laughing so hard! The poor boy was going to propose to me at dinner with his frat since our first date was to his frat’s annual winter formal!
At this point i still had no clue what was going on so I yelled at them to go away and closed the window so that I could get dressed for bed and brush my teeth. Finally, while I was in the bathroom, one of the crazier and wild members of the group starts pounding on my window waking up my poor roommate. And when she opens the window, she sees Joe on his knees. He was so emotional that he didnt open his eyes to notice that he wasnt proposing to me! She laughed and said hold on. So as I walked in, she flashed the lights a couple of times as a signal that I was back. I started to hear pounding again and the crazy friend screamed “Mechelle! Open the d#$@ window right this second!” So I opened it up and there was Joe on his knee…

It was hilarious and romantic. Too bad I wasnt the first girl he proposed to though!
