By The Power Vested In Me…

I know many people out there are religious and prefer a religious ceremony. Maybe you are Catholic and you have a priest already in mind. Perhaps you are some other denomination of Christianity, and have a minister that you like. Or you may be Jewish and you have a rabbi picked out. Maybe you’re not religious at all, and you want to get married by a judge. You could be nonreligious, but also want someone religious to officiate your wedding. I’ve been to a wedding where both a priest and a rabbi officiated together - sharing scripture readings.

The point is, you want to be comfortable with the person who will be marrying the two of you. I always thought I wanted a judge, but I wasn’t completely against the idea of having a religious officiant, if they would leave out all of the religious statements. Yes, I know how that must sound… but it is possible.

While we were interviewing videographers, Mr. Butterfly and I came across a wedding where the reverend was very outgoing, personable, and had a wonderful speaking voice. We instantly knew that we liked him, so we got his name and number.

Last night, Mr Butterfly and I went to meet with Rev. Jim Covington. What a great guy! He performs wedding ceremonies all over the NY metropolitan area, and he does non-religious ceremonies as well! He also counsels couples, and we are actually going to participate in his 4 session pre-marital counseling (something I have always been against doing). The vows are very similar to traditional vows, and they emphasize the promise of marriage, more than anything else. I am very excited to have him at my wedding and I think people will really enjoy the ceremony.

For more information on Rev. Covington, you can go to his website.

What type of ceremony are you planning on having?

I think pre-marital counseling is a great idea! I had friends that went through it and they said it was a good experience. It might even make your relationship stronger and better prepare you for marriage.

I guess our ceremony would be considered as “Other.” We have different beliefs, so there will be no religious scripture. But the ceremony is really important to us- we don’t want it to be “quick and simple”! So we’re going to incorporate non-religious readings and other elements

Never teh Bride

Sometimes it’s difficult to find a religious officiant, even if you want one. Many pastors (and so forth) from very liberal churches won’t marry to people who don’t belong to their church or aren’t active in their religion.

I want my bf’s sister (aka my future sis-in-law) to get certified and be our officiant. I like the idea of having someone who actually means something to us marrying us. My best friend who is getting married next month is doing the same thing.
