About Mrs. Firefly

Loveville, Maryland

April 17th, 2006 @ 12:12 pm by Mrs. Firefly

I hope to get my invites out this week. I’ve heard that the Rockefeller Center Post Office will hand cancel the envelopes if you come first thing in the morning. De Milo Designs has a great suggestion to have your envelopes hand cancelled in Loveville, Maryland (awwww!).

The post office of Loveville, Maryland offers a creative and generous service. They have a custom Loveville postmark that they use when canceling wedding invitations by hand. The first few dozen are free. After that there is a small charge of a few cents per piece. If you like, you may include a pre-addressed invitation to yourself. They will retain it and mail to you on your wedding day canceled with your wedding date. Call 301 475 5243 for specific instructions.

If cupids are just a little too wild but you still want to have your invitations hand canceled, the regular Loveville postmark (pictured at right) might work. This is a good option for couples in large cities where postal workers are too busy to hand cancel each piece. Call 301 475 5243 for specific instructions.

sorry, stupid question but …what do you mean by hand cancelled mail?

Ms. Firefly says:

not stupid at all! hand cancelling is when a postal worker date stamps the envelope by hand rather than putting it through the sorter at the post office. it minimizes damage and makes the envelople look less sloppy (the machine leaves lines across the whole envelope).

If you go to a very small post office (somewhere rural), they may let you hand-cancel them yourself. We did and now it’s a really nice memory! an early moment in marital teamwork (I cancelled and he put them out to dry.)

In Oregon there is a similar place. Bridal Veil Falls, located in the Columbia Gorge near Multnomah Falls, used to be a small town. Now, it consists of only a shack that functions as the post office. People come from all over the west coast to have their invitations mailed from here simply because the post office will hand cancel a beautiful stamp that includes the name ‘Bridal Veil’ on it.
