About Mrs. Butterfly

Men’s Wearhouse

April 20th, 2006 @ 2:05 pm by Mrs. Butterfly

Whether or not your man owns a tux, at some point in his life, he will need to rent one. Maybe he’s one of the groomsmen in a wedding or maybe the wedding is black tie. Maybe it’s a fancy corporate party. I’m sure there are many smaller and much more personal stores than Men’s Wearhouse, but I thought I should check it out first since it would give me a good idea of the selection, style, etc.

Mr. Butterfly and I went to the one on 46th street and found a great Calvin Klein suit for our engagement party. While we were at the check out counter, a man who was obviously a groomsman in a wedding walked in and started complaining about how horrible the groomsmen’s shirts turned out. He complained very loudly, but not in a mean way - just in a very controlled but obviously upset type of way. Of course, since I was thinking of using Men’s Wearhouse for my wedding tuxes, I got a little nervous.

Apparently, management at this store gets this all the time because after the guy left, they pretty much told me that it was the wedding party’s fault for not checking the shirts before they rented them out. I don’t know about you, but this did NOT make me feel any better.

However, they did assure me that if I BOUGHT the tux or suit, instead of RENTING it, then it would turn out much better. So we bought the Calvin Klein suit and the tailor took the measurements. They asked specifically about the cuffs on the pants and I said absolutely NOT. Well fast forward a week - we were in Houston, getting dressed for the e-party, and guess what? Cuffed pants.

Of course, we are going to take it back and make them fix it. I asked another friend who had used Men’s Wearhouse, and they also said that the suits came messed up (I don’t know which location they used).

We ended up buying a tux from Men’s Wearhouse, but NOT the NY location. We went to the original Men’s Wearhouse in Houston (my mom wanted to buy him a tux - see next blog on traditional gifts). The Houston people were SO nice. We will see how the tux turns out - but I have much more confidence in them.

So my Final Rating for this location?

Buying: B/B-
Renting: C

I highly recommend going to a location that is not as busy. And make sure that the tailor speaks English, and doesn’t need an interpreter.

*Please note that this is only based on MY experience, and what I have witnessed/been told. Others may have had great experiences, in which case - please tell me which location you went to and who you spoke with!

My boyfriend and I went to MW in Bay Terrace, Queens and it was a NIGHTMARE. We came straight out and said that this was not a suit that he will be wearing often so that we did not want to spend too much money. Still, the guy kept pulling out extremely expensive $500+ suits to show us. We had to keep telling him NO we want something cheaper than this. We finally found a suit that we had SOMEWHAT liked… we felt so much pressure to buy. Before you knew it, he was getting measured for alterations. I admit, I am normally very loud and opinionated but this time, I was just… I don’t know, caught by surprise. I didn’t know when to say NO… because if I did, we probably wouldn’t have bought the suit. GRANTED, the suit looks good on him, but after all the alterations (some unnecessary), which also cost a whole lot of money, the suit still came out to be a lot more than we wanted to pay. The guy was PUSHY PUSHY PUSHY. There was no doubt in our minds that they made commission on sales.

We will NEVER go there again. We have been thoroughly turned off of MW and I even wrote their corporate offices a nasty e-mail about it, to which they said that the complaint would be forwarded to that specific store so that the salesrep can be dealt with.

I just got back from the Florence, KY store and after a 50 minute wait -JUST TO BE FITTED- we were taken care of by a nice youg man. When it came time to pay -Do you know that you should add $5 to your price because if you won’t sign a “$5 waiver” you can’t rent the tux. So, why don’t they disclose the charges upfront and not after you have selected them as your tux place??? Why is it a waiver that you can’t refuse? “It is for our own good”, our sales manager commented. They will still charge you if you damage the tux but rest easy, if you get a stain on it or a seam tears that is repairable - YOU ARE COVERED! Well, I think they should include this fee in the rental and not slide it in on the end after it’s a done deal. What were we going to do— not have a tux for our daughter’s wedding. I signed us up for the entire grooms party, asked all the questions and no one ever said, add $5 to that price. “SNEAKY” practice!!!! Just tell everyone up front. They said it was on the info but.. it just says…. the price and tax and then a damage waiver.

I actually live in Houston and I’ve been to a couple different MW’s. They have all been extremely helpful whether I was getting a new suit for my man or helping him pick out a tie. I’m engaged now and I think I’ll take my Mr. Butterfly the MW and what a great idea to buy a tux as a gift!
