Prenuptual Agreements

May 3rd, 2006 @ 1:09 pm by Mrs. Bee

When I wrote a blog about prenuptual agreements (this was back when weddingbee was a personal blog), people were extremely passionate about voicing their opinions for one side or the other.

A Socialite’s Life reports today that Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes have entered into a prenup worth $40.5 million dollars. I know there are many romantics vehemently opposed to the idea of a prenup. But would your opinion change if you were a celebrity? What if you were “Tom Cruise” famous?

How do you feel about prenuptual agreements?

I am for them if one of you has a lot more assets than the other. We didn’t sign one because neither of us has anything.

I’ve always thought that prenups were not for me…something about planning for a divorce before the wedding. But, Mr. Nhi (the fiance) makes a good point that it isn’t always necessarily for divorce purposes. It is a matter of protecting assets, especially against a lawsuit that can wipe both of your assets (which can happen to us since we are both working in the law field in a high risk area).

So while I initially shot down ANY talk about prenups, I’m willing to listen to it now.

i’m in a position where my family is much more well-to-do than my FI. one of the biggest fears my father has always had growing up was that guys would only want to be with me or near me b/c of my future inheritance. when my FI told my father we wanted to get married, he’s the one who brought up the pre-nup and had no problems in signing one. He wanted to make my father feel as comfortable as possible about the marriage. this surprised the heck out of my family - and me! i’m really greatful that i have such a considerate FI.

i’m not even concerned about this issue. why? because my financial assets are nonexistent! and im pretty sure his is nonexistent too. i don’t think i know of any korean couple that had a prenup agreement either. it’s something that we don’t even think about!

wow surprised how many are for! when i first wrote about this, the vast majority of people were against prenups.

the people for prenups were probably too afraid to reveal themselves! afterall, the people against prenups were bashing them.

my vote was “i don’t have a position either way”. when it comes to my own relationship, i’m still a romantic and idealist. but then i see couples who have been married for decades just fall apart, and i wonder how i can self-righteously assume that we’re above that..?

Our prenup has nothing to do with my personal assets, but protects the corporation that my parents have worked their butts off for and of which I am a shareholder. We figure if they want a safety net for something that I didn’t work for in the first place - they can have it, no questions asked.
