The Secret to Great Skin

May 17th, 2006 @ 4:06 pm by Mrs. Bee

So what’s the secret to great skin?

Cheap, basic, drugstore products!

I started seeing a dermatologist a couple of months before my wedding for my eczema and she told me to stop using all my fancy schmancy products. At the time I was about to buy the Creme de la mer line since everyone that uses it swears by it - I wanted to look picture perfect for the wedding! But my dermatologist told me that the basic drugstore lines like Dove, Aveeno, Cetaphil, etc. are what work best for me… and most people. Expensive products = more ingredients = more chance to irritate your skin. Brilliant!

I’m a product junkie but to be honest my skin has never looked better since following my dermatologist’s advice. This is my skincare regimen:

1) Dove Soap for sensitive skin
2) Complex 15 face cream

That’s it! I rarely break out, but for the occasional pimple I usually put toothpaste on it. (I know… ghetto). Exfoliation is essential (I use a buf-puf facial sponge) and of course don’t forget the sunscreen!

What are your best skin care tips?

Exfoliate. Especially if you have dry skin.

Drink lots of water!

I also stick to a no-fuss soap + water routine, and it’s worked for me. When I feel like a good scrub, I use St Ive’s apricot scrub. If I get a pimple or two, I use spot cream. And of course I always use lotion with SPF 15!

I agree that fancy products irritate my skin. And the expensive spa facial made me break out! Expensive and fancy does not work for me…

I love all face washes that actually scrub and exfoliate. Particularly, aveeno skin brightening scrub and nuetrogena daily scrub.

I have eczema too and Dove soap rocks. Everything else dries my skin.

I also use Aveeno as a daily moisturizer but I want to look for something with SPF. Any recommendations?

thanks for the recommendations! i’m def. gonna try buf puf and complext 15. Unfortunately for me the expensive stuff does work for my skin - among my favs are Laniege’s Cleansing Milk (makes your skin feel uber smooth), Shiseido’s Face Wash, and I always exfoliate with Estee Lauder’s Therma D Microdermabrasion 2 times/week. works for me! :)

As an eczema sufferor since age four (now 33), I’ve tried it all! Expensive…cheap…all! I often get comments on how good my skin and makeup looks. I have used Dove soap all my life. Almost all my makeup comes from CVS, Wal-Mart, and Dollar General, except for my moisturizer. I use Clinique’s Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion - the only moisturizer (except for petroleum jelly - great as a nightime moisturizer on a clean face) that doesn’t make me itch.

BTW - recently discovered your site. Love it!

Hey Mrs. Bee,
I’ve got SUPER-sensitive skin like no other. Even the products formulated for sensitive skin make me break out in an eczematous rash. I’ve been using Neutrogena Healthy Skin Foaming Cleanser. For moisturizing, I use a line of products called Osmotics. They sell it out here in Cali at Nordstroms and Saks. It’s a bit pricey but it is very gentle. I recommend their intensive moisture cream and their balancing cleanser.

I used to see a dermatologist all the time too. Once I told him all the products I used and he and I had a good time laughing/arguing about it. Basically, he said the same thing yours did…the fancy stuff only give you a temporary feeling/effect and just cost a lot of money. He told me to just use Dove, Lubriderm, and Cetaphil. That’s what I’ve been using for the past years. Some of my girlfriends scoff at me and think it’s a crime that I use such cheap stuff on my face and body but I rather listen to a MD and plus my skin has gotten a lot better. I don’t think I see the difference besides packaging, frangance, and a lot of extra stuff I don’t think I need.

I have ezcema as well and recently have been developing it on my face. It’s so badly plaqued and red that I’ve started using primer (Philosophy The Present) and foundation (Maybelline Pure liquid foundation). I’m curious, what makeup brands do other ezcema sufferers wear? Does anyone know of a brand geared for sensitive skin?

I think Cetaphil is the best cleanser out there (so gentle, yet does the job). Their SPF 15 lotion is pretty good too; I like that it protects against both UVA and UVB rays. And yes, exfoliation is sooo important! I also recently blogged about some other at-home remedies that I do: http://bigfatchinesewedding.blogspot.com/2006/04/at-home-facials.html.

Most of my girlfriends uses Dove and Cetaphil to wash their face and they claimed that it works, I just didn’t believe it’ll work on my skin. I’ve been using Shiseido Whiting wash because I have a few freckles and I think it works to lighten the freckles a bit. If I were to choose a drugstore product, I would go for the Neutrogena products. I’m still using their Neutrogena sunscreen 45 (the only SPF over 15 in the drugstores then) the past few years over my serum & lotions/crÆ’¨mes. Also use Neutrogena body lotion products and Palmer’s creams.
After my face wash (I’m looking for a gel cleanser for my combination skin), I exfoliate with Peter Thomas Roth’s Botanical Buffing Beads. They are so gentle it’s great for everyday use. After that I applied L’Oreal’s Plenitude HydraFresh Toner.
If you want the best result for your eyes, apply an eye serum (Try Clarin’s Extra-Firming Eye Contour Serum ) then eye cream (For daywear use Clique’s Advanced Stop Signs Eye SPF 15, for night Lamer’s The Eye Balm).
For problem skin, Murad is a good brand. I just started trying the hydrating lotion during the day and so far so good =) I use Lamer crÆ’¨me at night (I’m trying to get rid of that bc it does not work on me but because it’s so expensive I didn’t want to waste it… I would try Clarin’s crÆ’¨mes next) but before my lotions/crÆ’¨me I applied Phytomer’s serum, I just started using this brand so I don’t know if it works. For the day I also apply the Phytomer’s Purifying Acnicontrol Fluid to minimize the shine on my nose. Then pat my face with Neutrogen’s sunscreen whether it is sunny or rainy and finish it with makeups. Night time, after the Lamer crÆ’¨me for my freckles I would use Palmers Cocoa Butter Masssage Stretch Mark Cream. Yes, on my face. It works to minimize my freckles! It takes 3 months to notice the difference but it works! So I’m sure it works on scars too =)
I use Lamer’s Refining Facial scrub once a week (I had it for the longest time… seems like I can never get rid of it and try something new) then apply Murad’s Exfoliating Fruit Enzyme Mask (It’s also a new product I’m experiencing). A few days later, I would use Nars Mud Mask. I think masks are very important to deep clean your skin. Once a month I would apply Vitamin E oil all over my skin overnight (I know it’s greasy… just wash your pillowcase the next day), wake up and take a steaming shower and wash it off, it leaves my skin super soft! And if I’m not lazy, I will use natural ingrediences… Like egg white to tighten your skin and cleanse it, egg yolk w/ a few drops of lemon & milk brightens your skin. I’m pretty lazy so that rarely happens =P
For great skin, I think sleep, exercise, eating fruits and drink lots of water is the key to flawless skin (so easy to say but yet so hard to do!). Oh and make sure you clean your face very well and remove all your makeups before hitting the sacks =)
Sorry for the super long comment, I can’t stop when it comes to beauty =P
