Wedding Planner - Yay or Nay?

May 18th, 2006 @ 2:26 pm by Mrs. Bee

I knew from the beginning that I wanted a day-of wedding coordinator. I’m a control-freak, obsessive, cuckoo for coco puffs crazy person so I knew I had to have someone who would make sure the entire day would run smoothly.

In retrospect it was one of the best decisions I made. So many little things went wrong on the big day but my planners were there to handle it all. They made sure we stuck to the schedule we created, and I think that gave a great flow to the entire night’s activities. Honestly if I could do it again I would have hired them from the beginning.

But I know a lot of brides have mixed feelings about wedding planners. Some think that having a planner takes away the experience of researching and planning your own wedding; they cost a lot of money. Others think that a planner is indispensable in helping you with the planning process, saving you time, and giving you piece of mind.

If money were no object, would you want a wedding planner?

If money were not an issue, I would definitely hire a wedding planner, if only to have someone I could call at all hours just to be like “yo let’s talk about making my own paper for the invitations.”

After seeing/experiencing how hectic my best friend’s wedding was, I’m definitely leaning toward to hiring a Day-Of coordinator. I know some planners also offer “Week-Of” service. Maybe that’s worth looking into too.

I enjoy the process of researching and planning the details of my wedding… but I’m ever so glad that our resort provides a Day-Of-Coordinator! On the big day, I don’t want to have to worry about anything…

Depending on the service fees of the wedding planners and their vendor connections, the amount of money saved by the wedding planner should be about the amount of money you spent on hiring the wedding planner. So your total budget with or without a wedding planner should come out to be about the same (this is obviously referring to a planner who plans out the entire wedding, not the day-of ones).
Plus how much money is too much to avoid making mistakes on the most important day of your life?
Hiring a day-of coordinator: X amount of dollars
Having the perfect, stress-free wedding: priceless

if i had the money, i would hire one. but i know i’m not going to have enough moola so i’m probably going to do everything myself and pray that it all works out. and i’m such a control freak that i think i’d want to do everything my way or i’m not going to be happy. and i think it’ll be fun doing everything w/the fiance! kind of like a bonding thing where the two of you create this great event together.

We are hiring a coordinator just so that our friends and family will get to enjoy the day with us. I didn’t price check (a huge mistake, I know) and just went with recommendations of friends and from vendors who beamed when I mentioned her name.

As a follow-up, for you brides who are hiring coordinators, how much did you spend (and what level of service did you receive, e.g., “day of,” “semi-hands on,” or take my money and run”). THANKS!!

In the hispanic community to hire a wedding planner/coordinator is frown upon. I’m a hispanic wedding coordinator and have heard so many relatives and couples say that they are happy to have had me or my assistant there so they could enjoy the day without having to worry of the little things.
