How We Met

May 22nd, 2006 @ 10:50 am by Mrs. Butterfly

I think the engagement period is partly a time of reflection. Over the past several months, I’ve been thinking about what our married life would be like (pretty much the same as now, apparently), what our kids would be like (absolutely adorable!!), what our first house is going to look like, among many other silly daydreams.

I’ve also been thinking about the past as well. Recently, there were a few things that reminded me of when I first met Mr. Butterfly.

I had broken up with an ex about 2 months prior to meeting him. I was enjoying being single, and I started going to those Asian Happy Hours on Thursdays with a new coworker. At one of them, this guy came up to my coworker and said hello. Then of course, there was the inevitable, this is my friend blah blah, and this is your friend blah blah, nice to meet you, yada yada yada. This is how I met Mr. Butterfly. At a happy hour. Hahaha.

We said our introductions, and then we danced (he couldnt dance back then either How We Met : wedding new york Silly). I told him I was going for a beer, and he came with me and bought me one. We sat and tried to have a conversation over the loud music. I didn’t hear much (I actually don’t remember too much, cuz I was really tipsy). But I got the gist - he worked at Disney, he was 26, Chinese, single and cute, AND he liked Buffy! Then he asked me for my number, and the rest is history.

How did you meet your fiance?

I met mine on a local Cubs bus trip done through our local bar. Crazy enough - I graduate HS with his older sister, never knowing she had a younger brother (my FI is 2 years younger than me). That whole day - we were inseperable!

We met at my friend’s, and his brother’s October 2004 wedding in Louisiana. FI was the best man and I was the only bridesmaid, and subsequently the Maid of Honor. The wedding couple, M and J, had been slyly trying to get us together, or as they put it, really thought we should meet. We formally first met the Thursday before their Saturday wedding, at a musical town event. The next night was the rehearsal dinner where FI and I were set up to sit together. Following dinner, the wedding party all went out on the town. The next day was the wedding, followed by another night on the town. That night we really hit it off. We had breakfast after our night out and FI came over afterwards. The two of us stayed up talking until 9 AM. With no sleep he left that day to drive back to Oklahoma. After a few weeks, we began conversating fequently over the phone and eventully planned a New Years trip to Texas to meet up with wedding couple, M and J. The day after Christmas, FI ended up driving down from Oklahoma and we drove over to Texas the following weekend. After our trip, Kacey never left Louisiana or my side.

Both of us responded to a post from someone who wanted to organize a relay team for a 20-mile race. On the day of the race, he was late, and our team was worried that we would have to drop out. Of course, at the very last minute, he showed up and we ended up talking since we were the last relayers to run. We wanted to run the race every year to commemorate our meeting, but NYRR canceled the race the following year. It makes me smile thinking back to it. Thanks for bringing up the topic.

We met at our neigborhood association meeting. We had a community day and had to work together as co-chairs for an activity. He walked me home after our wrap up meeting and asked me out. And it only took him 2 months to ask me out. I didn’t think he was interested.

I met Chris at Bertuccis where we both worked. I was trying to make money for my books in college and he was earning money on weekends to get through law school. He noticed me at work one day, and started following me to the bar after work often- and someone in one drunken night, I invited myself to his law school formal. I literally fell in love with him that night, but I still played hard to get… for 3 days. We’ve been inseparable since.

we met at a wedding as members of a large bridal party (21 attendants!). we didn’t see each other again until almost a year later at another wedding…we went on our first date after the reception. :) found out later we had gone to the same two elementary schools, but at different times and lived 2 miles from each other during high school!

I met Eric at my childhood friend’s rehearsal dinner. I glanced across the room, saw him, and thought he was so handsome. I also figured he had a girlfriend, but thankfully he did not. It turns out that he was a college roommate of the groom. I was the only single bridesmaid, so I was thrilled to have someone to talk to. The day after the wedding, he sent a dozen long-stemmed roses to the television station where I worked. I still remember being introduced to him-that exact second. It is good to remember those times when things are stressful!

We were in the same class in junior high and I had a huge crush on him, but he never knew. We went on to different high schools and I never saw him. Fast forward to 15 years later and I was (re?)-introduced to him through a friend of a friend. I didn’t recognize him, but he remembered me right away and started talking about friends I had in junior high and what town I lived in. He thought I was being a snob since I wasn’t answering him, but I was freaking out because here was a guy I thought I didn’t know who seemed to know too much about me. He kept insisting he knew me and he had been in my bio class. I finally asked his name again and it turned out I had misheard the first time… he has a very uncommon name which I would have remembered if I had heard correctly. I never told him I had that crush on him until after he asked me out. He thinks it must be fate!! :)

We met in college. I was helping a friend find her crush. We spent all night going in and out of bars on the main street in town. On our stop, we finally found him, and his friends and roommates (my fiance was his roommate). We didn’t really care for each other at first, but my friend was obsessed with his roommate. I ended up at their apartment a week later to watch a football game. During half time, we started to play drinking games and ended up hitting it off over a game of beer pong. That was 5 1/2 years ago and we’ve been madly in love ever since. My friend and his roommate never made it, but his roommate ended up marrying one of my other friends!

He was living in Chicago and already had a job lined up in NYC (previously did a summer program with them) and knew only the person who he moved out to NY with (also had job lined up) and some people he had met through his program. So he went online to meet some people (he never had met anyone through the net before, but I was a seasoned veteran) and he found me. We chatted via
email and IM for a couple weeks, talked on the phone a few times. He was moving less than 15 blocks away from me so I gave him tips on delivery places, bars, etc. The day he arrived, I coincidentally was at a bar across the street from his building for happy hour and after a couple drinks, I called and welcomed him to my city and he was very touched. So we said we’d speak the next day to make plans and we did. It was the perfect evening and we didnt want to say goodbye. He never went on another blind date, met my parents a week later, and the rest is history :)

I’m from eastcoast, he’s from California. We met at a conference in Cali nine years ago. (This was when I was 16, and he - 18) We became great friends, kept in touch, visited each other, share our bf/gf stories, etc. Six years later, when timing was right for both of us, he finally asked me out.

It was thru my roommate in college. She actually dated him briefly but it didn’t work out. (She allowed someone else to kiss her!) He later transferred into my college and we shared a few classes together. I was dating someone else at the time but it wasn’t working out. He emailed me one day out of the blue and 5 yrs later (this weekend will be our anniversary!), we are still together.

we met online. Remember AA (asianavenue.com)??? Well that’s where we met. Exchanged few notes here and there and lost touch because I was with someone during that time. I believe 6 months later (can’t really remember the exact time frame), I found him on AA again. In his words “stalked him”. please! :-). We found each other talking, exchanging notes with each other for about few months.

I told him I want to meet him face to face since both of us are single. Nothing serious.. Just two friends hanging out… and the rest is history.

about to get married next year June 2007.

I was using a friends computer not knowing her messenger was on. FI popped up thinking I was her. So after telling him who I was, we struck up a conversation/debate. I found him very annoying, yet cute, because he wouldn’t drop the subject. And because I debated back with him and was able to “hold my end of the argument”, it was love for him. I gave him my email address and we dated for two years before we became engaged.

The wedding is July 15th 2006. :D I am so excited and I cannot wait to spend the rest of my life with him.
