Mother of the Bride

May 25th, 2006 @ 3:47 pm by Mrs. Bee

When my mom was shopping for a dress for my wedding, I think she had a harder time finding a dress than I did! She hit Nordstrom, Bloomingdales, Macys, Ann Taylor… “Everything is too low cut,” she told me. She resigned to wearing a traditional Korean dress because she couldn’t find anything she liked.

But she persevered, braved the malls weekend after weekend, and finally found a dress. She wore a traditional Korean dress through both ceremonies, then changed into her reception dress pictured below.

My mama & me (People say we look alike. Do we? I can’t tell.)

Unfortunately there aren’t that many resources for mother of the bride dresses. I would say department stores like Bloomingdales, Nordstrom, Macy’s, and Saks Fifth Avenue are your best bet. You may also want to check out RK Bridal which has a decent selection of mother of the bride gowns.

Do you have any suggestions on where to buy mother of the bride dresses?

features are the same, face shape is different.

didn’t bride’s mag recently have a spread on MOB dresses? i can’t quite remember how high-cut any of them really were, but they seemed appropriate from the daughter’s point of view.

We checked out RK and then went to lord & taylor on the way back home. My mom tried on one Carman Marc Valvo dress and bought it. It was so easy. I think Carmen March Valvo dresses are great — they’re not cheap, but not $$$$$ either (like Clifford Michael for example) and there are styles to fit various ages …

i think you guys look totally alike!

Oh my gosh, you read my mind! I was actually thinking about writing to you guys asking about resources for MOB (or in this case, Mother of the Groom) dresses. My mom is frantically looking for a dress for my bro’s wedding. She doesn’t want anything sleeveless, (since doesn’t like the look of armpits LOL!), plus it has to be light weight material since the wedding is July in the freakin’ hot LA, and of course the right color for the season. So far we’ve looked @ all the depts you mentioned above. Oh, and there is this website people can check out…

Hopefully we’ll find something soon.

My friend’s mother was having a similar problem and she got a great outfit at Ann Taylor! Their new “Celebrations” collection is geared towards wedding parties and my friend’s mother ending up buying this outfit: http://www.anntaylor.com/IWCatSectionView.process?IWAction=Load&RestartFlow=t&Merchant_Id=1&Section_Id=7505

I was actually going to feature that dress in this post! I liked it. =)

But I tried to put myself in the mindset of my mom and I know she would want a flowy, feminine dress. Seems like all the mother of the bride dresses come with jackets, boleros, etc. and are more “suit-like.”

My mom had a really hard time too! We tried Lord &Taylor, Macy’s, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, but we couldn’t find anything that would suited her well. We finally found a dress for her from the social occasion line here:

i have no idea where moms can go to buy dresses. macys? nordstroms? but ive seen dresses at those stores and they definitely are not mom sizes. they would seriously need some alterations. but this would prob not be an issue for korean moms if they were attending a korean wedding ceremony. just give them a hanbok and they’re happy.

Where to look for MOB dresses? Anywhere but the bridal department! The now traditional MOB dress is a sequinned monstrosity, if you ask me. It’s designed to make mom look old, frumpy, tasteless, and unattractive. I think moms should pull out their best party dresses or shop for something at a store where they already like the styles on display. Heck, if she’s got something nice and appropriate in her own closet, there’s some money saved!

Your mom, BTW, looks fabulous! That’s a great outfit. What’s more, she can wear it again to any formal occasion.

My mom had a couple dresses custom made the last time she was in HK. My MIL found a dress she liked a David’s Bridal.
