Parental Permission

June 13th, 2006 @ 2:12 pm by Mrs. Bee

I watched a bit of Martha Stewart Weddings yesterday (part of the Style Network’s 21 day Wedding Party) and they said only 4% of men ask their girlfriend’s parents for permission to marry their daughter. I still think it’s a very nice gesture, not at all antiquated.

Did Mr. Bee ask? Well he met my parents about 2 months after we’d first met. At dinner he brought up the topic of marriage and my dad’s response was that he wanted to meet Mr. Bee’s parents first, as was traditional Korean custom.

Technically did Mr. Bee ask? Yes. Alas the answer at the time, I guess was… no.

Did your fiance ask your parents for permission?

Mr. Daisy had a sit down with my parents the week before he proposed. he formally asked for permission and my dad (who may well adore him more than me) gave him the go-ahead.

My bf is asking my dad during their round of golf in a few weeks! My dad already knows it’s coming because my mom can’t keep her lip shut. But they all love him too much (and maybe more than me too!)- so I’m sure it’ll be fine. The mothers already met last year when we moved in together, so it’s nice that we’re all like family already.

I think my parents would have been mystified if my beloved had asked their permission. OTOH, we knew he’d been accepted as a part of the family when my mother knitted him his own Christmas stocking. At that point they might have disowned me if I hadn’t married him! LOL!

My fiance met my parents for lunch to ask them. I was living at home with them, at the time, and I had no idea!

boohoo. my fiance knew that my korean parents wouldnt think surprising me was a big deal. for them, if a man asks for permission, that means that he and i have already decided to marry, therefore i would have known about it. so JUST in case they might say something, he didnt tell them. he didnt tell my brother either. JUSt in case he told my parents. my family cant keep a secret for the life of them. hahahaha.
