One More For the Guest List?

June 17th, 2006 @ 11:23 am by Mrs. Grasshopper

Everyone has a rough time paring down their guest list, but for one potential guest, I just don’t know if she will get an invitation. She is super sweet and loving, but she can also be a bit exuberant at times, is known to voice her opinion when not happy, and enjoys offering people a hearty jump when greeting them. “Who is this freak?!” you ask?

Meet Sasha, our two year old puppy.
sasha21.jpg

She tends to go everywhere with us, seriously, she does. We are those people. She comes to the bar with us for happy hour, she goes hiking with us when we head to the mountains and soon she will even be working part-time with Mr. Grasshopper. His officemates should love that. It is hard to imagine her not coming to the wedding.

Mr. Grasshopper wants her at the wedding, no questions asked. So do I, sort of. I think she might bark if no one pays attention to her during the ceremony though. On the other hand, I also think some of the dog-at-the-wedding photos are pretty cute.

To be clear, I have no intentions of dressing her up or asking her to play any specific wedding party role. We’re not that insane. Yet. Maybe she’ll just get one of the collars and leashes Mrs. Bee posted about a few weeks ago.

So how do we handle this? I don’t think she should be there the whole night-she just needs to meet and greet, take a few photos and then head home. I think we’ll ask our dog walker to bring her after the ceremony, watch over her at the reception for a bit (to make sure she doesn’t do her jumping hello), and then bring her home for the evening. I hope the dog walker is down with this idea. I think this could be a booming side business for dog walkers!

Ok, so honestly, are we the only nutty people out there who are thinking of inviting their dog to the wedding? C’mon people! Who’s with me?!

I am all for inviting pooches!! Our pug pup will be at the reception. The reception is at my Mom’s home. Our pug is a part of the family so he must be there. Our florist is going to make him a collar that matches the guys. Go for it Miss Grasshopper!

I think having your dog walker there is an excellent idea! And if she doesn’t participate in the festivities, why not? The pictures will be very cute.

I am definitely in agreement with you! My dogs are the first on the guest list without a doubt — very cool idea! After all, our pets are family too!!!

~~~Zoe barks at Sasha~~~
I LOVE my VIZSLA too! I would really consider it if we weren’t flying to Mexico to get married. Now I have to find somebody to watch her since all my friends and family are going with us.
Vizslas rock though!
I think it’s a great idea! We really really wanted our dog to be our ringbearer, but in the end we decided that she would be scared and nervous and it wouldn’t be any fun for her. So she will miss the whole thing. We are definitely more disappointed than she is though!
If your wedding site is amenable and you’ve got someone to watch out for her needs while you’re busy getting married, why not? Family takes all forms.
I am heartbroken our doggie oliver won’t be able to make it to our wedding (destination weddings are not the best way to go if you want to include the pooch). I think its great your dog will be there. And if she barks…who cares! It will liven things up a bit. Bringing the dog walker is a brilliant idea!
I can’t imagine not having my dog at my wedding. But I do agree that the dog does not need to be around for everything. I would have the puppy at the ceremony and then be taken home after that.
I am so with you! I have a 40lb puppy (yes a puppy still - she’s a mix of akita/st bernard) I would really love to have her at the wedding, but my FI isn’t too thrilled with the idea. So instead, we might have our dog with us for our engagement photos.
Fi and I are including our Teddy in the wedding. He’s our ringbearer. I know the debate where pets shouldn’t have a place in the wedding but he’s really part of our lives. I would be really sad if he’s not in our photos. Plus he’s really photogenic.
We don’t have a dog, but the venue has a miniature donkey named Rosebud who sort of wanders around a little paddock. I’m thinking of having a little collar of roses made for him.
Do you happen to be Jewish? You can get a cute little dog yarmulke and tallis at ChosenCouture.com. Adam Sandler’s dog wore a yarmulke to his wedding!
Is Sasha a Vizsla? She’s beautiful! We have a Vizsla, named Oskar. If we hadn’t gotten married in Puerto Rico, I would definitely have figured out some way of bringing him along at least to the ceremony. He’s so spastic like most Vizslas are though and not at all properly trained for “company.” If you think Sasha can handle a lot of guests without going ape crazy, go for it!
Obey the vizsla! That is the motto around out house. Our vizsla, “Briggs” will only be a little over 1 year old and I don’t really think he will be able to handle all of the people, and the lack of attention on him. He would look sooo handsome in our pics, though. FI definitely wants him there, but I don’t think it’s going to happen. If your dog walker agrees, you should definitely do it.
Sasha barks a big thanks to everyone for thinking she should be at the wedding! She is so excited and keeps checking the mailbox for her invitation to arrive.
Sasha is a Vizsla and has moments of being neurotic, but overall she really likes being around lots of folks so I think it could work out with her stopping by for a bit. Now she just needs to decide what collar to wear.
And another note: Oskar is SO, SO cute. I checked out your bio. Adorable.
I wish I could see some of the other pups referenced (hint, hint ;))
There’s some pics of Zoe pics at the bottom of my bio. Just wanted to say you girls do a great job with the wedding blogs & I really enjoy them.
What V owner would pass up a chance to show of her pride & joy?
our chihuahua was the ringbearer… he goes with us to a lot of places & loves people, so we knew it wasn’t going to be a problem. we barely got to see him during the day… so when we called him up to the alter (someone was holding him in the back row) he ran straight towards us… it was SOO perfect :)
