Do as I Say, Not as I Do

June 19th, 2006 @ 8:54 am by Mrs. Caterpillar

Guess who’s bridesmaids are buying $500 bridesmaid dresses?

Yes, that’s right, mine.

But, before anyone takes me to task, I would like to say that this was not my idea. The parameters for the Mr. & Miss Caterpillar wedding were: wear what you want, and it would be nice if it were light blue. I didn’t want the girls stuck with dresses that they couldn’t wear again, or dresses that they just didn’t like. I figured they would just go to Anthropologie or Bergdorf or the Salvation Army and buy whatever they wanted.

I was totally, totally wrong. They are SO INTO BEING BRIDESMAIDS! They wanted the entire bridesmaid experience — matching gowns and everything. So, we went to Thread.

I think they tried on every gown in the place, and then decided on these:

They’re going for the blue bell chiffon. I tried to steer them towards the seersucker, or the shorter cuts, pointing out that seersucker and tea length dresses could be worn again. They shoo’d me away. They told me that it really didn’t matter if they wore them again; they just want to look like bridesmaids.

Unbelievable. They are just so cute.

PS: the dresses at Thread are all totally adorable, and they have a great cocktail collection in slinky satins and fancy chiffons shot with gold thread. But, they have some surly-ass salespeople there. In spite of our appointment, no one helped us — I even rehung all the dresses on hangers and put them back on the rack! I wonder if I should call back and tell the manager I think their service is really poor. But does it matter? We’re going to buy dresses there anyway. Sheesh.

I love the dresses. I totally think you should call and let the manager know that their “salespeople” weren’t fulfilling their roles. Let the person in charge know that you weren’t helped. Even though you’re going to buy from them anyway, tell them you’d like to purchase from them but you’re worried about their lack of enthusiasm for your business. You may get better treatment (and maybe a discount?).

I love Thread’s dresses! But I’ll be paying for all of my bridesmaids’ attires. I don’t think I can justify spending that much :-(. ~Envious~!

And in regards to voicing your dis-satisfaction w/the store, I agree w/ Lisa. It IS exactly because you ARE buying from them, that they need to treat you the way you deserve.

I wouldn’t worry too much about the pricetag since it was the bridesmaids and not you who demanded the mucho expensive dresses. As long as they’re the ones paying for it, let them have what they like. I’m sure they’ll look lovely floating down the aisle in those dresses.

Also, I’m agreeing with J and Lisa. Just because you’ve decided to get the gowns there anyway doesn’t mean management doesn’t need to know how the salespeople are treating customers. If I walk into a store planning to drop money there, I expect the staff to acknowledge me and treat me accordingly. And lest anyone think I’ve never been on the other side of the cash register from that statement, I worked the floor in four different bookstores, three restaurants, and a snack bar. I’ve also been receptionist for a museum.

There’s a certain level of effort required from a service worker. It’s their job. That’s what they get paid for. If I can’t get the time of day from someone who’s about to earn the commission on my $500 purchase, I’m going to complain to the manager and ask to be handed off to a more deserving salesperson.

That’s awsome!! Just remember that you didn’t advise them of their choices. Their decision was soley their own!

oh, i’m doing my maids’ dresses at Thread too! (indeed, my sister is there at this moment picking hers). i love the ones that you have chosen!!

i’m surprised that they weren’t great to you. i have had the exact opposite service there, so i would definitely let them know. i am sure management would appreciate the feedback.

Love Thread dresses! My bridesmaids will also be wearing Thread. They are pricey but such great quality and so beautiful! Mine took 3.5 months to receive (yikes!)
