About Mrs. Grasshopper

Mr. Grasshopper and I cannot decide where to go for our honeymoon. We’ve been doing research all weekend and just don’t know which is the best location for us. Before we look at one more villa or beach web site, I am reaching out to the weddingbee readers to ask, “Where do you think we should go for our honeymoon?”

We are looking to go right after the wedding for about 10 days in mid-September. Here is what I can tell you we are looking for:

  • Sandy beaches to relax on after 11 months of planning this wedding
  • Fun activities (surfing, kayaking, hiking, exploring, people watching, not clubbing)
  • Culture
  • Delicious food and drinks
  • A location that does not take more than a day to get to (Australia and Fiji)
  • A place that isn’t mired in rainy/hurricane season (Mexico and the Caribbean)

Here is what we have considered:

Hawaii (Kauai and Maui). What we like about Hawaii is the idea of sitting on a sandy beach and relaxing, but also having some activities to pursue, like kite surfing, kayaking, and hiking. And, maybe we will get picked to play extras on Lost!

The Amalfi Coast (Capri and Positano). The thought of going to the Italian Coast is appealing to us because we would be near a beach (though maybe too rocky?), we could enjoy delicious Italian cuisine (gelato!), and the old world culture would balance out the beach vacation with something interesting if we need a break from the waves.

So what do y’all think? Hawaii or Italy? Other suggestions?

We’re going to the UAE for 11 days. 5 nights in Duabi, a few in Al Ain, and a few in Ras Al Khaimah. There are beaches, an indoor ski slope, amusement parks, shopping, camel rides through the desert, and amazing food. There’s great article on Dubia in the Vanity Fair with Anderson Cooper on the cover. Emirates Air has a direct flight from JFK that’s 12 hours.

The Amalfi Coast is beautiful, but the food is extremely expensive, and the beaches are all little stones–no sand.
Positano is much less touristy than Capri.
Good luck!

we went to maui on our honeymoon and LOVED it! it was so nice because we didn’t have to worry about customs or passports, but once we got there, it definitely felt exotic and new. we stayed on maui the whole time, but there was so much to do…helicopter rides, surf lessons, even biking down haleakala, the dormant volcano. we loved it so much that we’ll probably head back for our 5 or 10 year anniversary. if you’re interested in going, we worked with an excellent travel agent who is a native and gave us great tips and discounts!

We had a similar dilemma because we’re leaving for our honeymoon October 8th…we decided on Maui because all of the other tropical places were just coming out of hurricane/monsoon/tornado/tsunami season haha…and partially because we went to Italy last year (where he popped the question)…
With that said:
I absolutely LOVE Italy. It is so beautiful, lots of culture, great food, drinks…and the Amalfi Coast is wonderful. Capri is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen with the Grottos, great shopping, clear water. But yes, its pretty rocky beach. They do have lounge chairs you can rent and then they bring you drinks…If you’re going to stick to the Amalfi on your trip, then I would pick that…the weather will be nice, and if you get bored of relaxing then you can go sight-seeing.
If you decide to go to Amalfi, you must go to Sorrento and stay in this place that has these little bungalow/cabins. It is up on the cliff and has a beautiful view. They have a boat tour to take to Capri and a couple other things that leave from their own port. They also have a little trail that takes you down to the water/pebble beach. Email me if you need the name…I’ll look for it.
When we were in Italy, we visited a LOT of cities, and we were go-go-go all the time…so this year I wanted a VERY relaxing…just walking from beach to pool to hotel room type of trip, and FH agreed.

I hope that helps!

I’m pretty sure this is the place: http://www.bookings.it/hotel/it/villaggio-santafortunata-campogaio.html?aid=306395;label=sorrento;sid=8d1e4de612283531b46f0a2824f1a1c8;checkin=;checkout=

It’s not the Ritz, but its got a great ambiance. And at night when you’re walking back to your little cabin, there are fire flys out like crazy. It’s so cool!

How about the Greek islands? We went there for our honeymoon and the beaches were unbelievable, there is SO much culture and it is incredibly beautiful, not to mention cheaper than Italy…

I think both are great choices. But if you go to Hawaii, I think Kuaui is a lot prettier (with a lot more to do) and isn’t as tourist-y as Maui. There is helicopter tours over the falls that were in Jurassic Park, boat tours over the Napali coast, ziplining, snorkeling, some great beaches, etc. But you gotta get Lapperts Ice Cream if you go :) It’s the best!

Enjoy your honeymoon, wherever you end up :)

i’m going to kuaui and the big island. not going to maui because i want to try to avoid the more “touristy” spots. big island has the live volcano, which the other islands do not.

i’ve been to italy too and loved it…that’s a tough decision!

My sis and her husband went to Greece. I think it is such a great idea what they can combine the culture, good good elements with the sandy beach resorts feel. Go to Athens for sigtheeing and its rich culture, then head to mykonos for euro style of wild partying. Wrap the trip up with 4-5 nights of luxious resort at the romantic Santonrini. You will have a blast.

My FI and I are thinking beaches, beaches and beaches. We are planning to go to Tahiti and Bora Bora. A lot of good dive sites there.

Exuma Bahamas. The beaches themselves are absolutely breath-taking: clear-water, sand dunes, and much privacy.

Hawaii- But I’m biased, that’s where we’re going. A couple friends of ours have gone and you can relax or do tons or outdoorsy stuff (we’re really into hiking and rock climbing and anything outside).

i’m in honeymoon decision-mode myself and it’s tough to figure out!!

i think that if you want a more relaxing trip right after the wedding, then Hawaii sounds excellent. you may want to “do” more things in Italy. many of my friends have recommended that i focus on relaxation immediately after the wedding…

for this reason, Mr. Daisy and i are doing a quick (5 night) beach holiday to decompress after the wedding and then Italy in the late-Spring…

My friend is planning on going to the Greek islands for her honeymoon. My bf’s cousin recently sent us a postcard from there (he was studying abroad) and the picture was gorgeous.

Oh, Italy is my top destination choice for a honeymoon! I think that you might as well go someplace different and exciting while you’re travelling anyway, and Italy has so much culture to offer.

We really liked Miss Daisy’s idea of a beach trip for post wedding relaxation and then an explorer trip to follow in the Spring.

Thank you to everyone for your great feedback! We have quite a bit of research to do this weekend!
