The Power of Dum Dum Dee Dum

June 19th, 2006 @ 12:48 pm by Mrs. Ant

I was extra grumpy when I woke up this morning. Probably due to leftover angst from last night’s NBA game. (Oooohh Mavs… That game was yours! How could you let it slip away?!)

To take my mind off the loss, I flipped on the TV. And lo and behold, there was a televised wedding on Live with Regis and Kelly.

Now I am not a morning person. Forget being giddy about the wedding or happy for the pair. It was way too early to be happy about anything- especially not this strange couple who chose to wed on national TV. I stared at the screen like a zombie as bridesmaids and groomsmen made their way down the studio aisle.

Then it hit me. No, not the coffee spike. It was DUM DUM DEE DUM. When the organ started singing the chords of “Here Comes the Bride,” I had a complete change of heart. Suddenly, it was the most touching ceremony I had ever seen. I actually started crying tears of joy as the beautiful bride walked down the aisle with her father.

I caught myself and wondered “What happened to me?!” Somehow, Dum Dum Dee Dum was a cue for my brain to cease functioning and for my heart to pump out the strongest possible wedding-evoked emotions.

On one hand, it sealed my decision to walk down the aisle to “Here Comes the Bride.” There’s just no other selection that would complete the experience. I can’t even imagine walking down to something else. It’d be like graduating without a cap and gown, or celebrating a birthday without singing “Happy Birthday.” Sure they’re silly traditions. But that’s exactly what they are, traditions- time-honored practices followed by generation after generation. And I want to be a part of that symbolic tradition.

But on the other hand, Dum Dum Dee Dum is guaranteed to make me bawl like a baby. Unless I somehow desensitize myself to its effects. By, you know, playing it over and over and over before the wedding to build up resistance.

I’m sure that my fiance would agree that is a great idea! ;)

I completely agree with you! I didn’t think I’d be as “traditional” as I ended up being, but while planning the wedding, I couldn’t imagine walking down the aisle to another song.

PS - I started hyperventilating when I heard Canon in D and not the bridal march. Not to alarm you, but you might want to listen to the music your bridal party walks out to over and over again instead! =)

I’ve been going over and over what’s going to be on my iPod that day–since we’re having a destination wedding for the real thing, and a huge homecoming reception, we’re trying to kee it simple…I panicked when I accidentally hit “shuffle.” Might want to watch that one…

Yes, my wedding is going to be as traditional as it gets and it is (gulp) less than two weeks away!
I just got emotional reading your blog. That is seriously how emotional I am lately about my dream day.
And to top it off, there will be a trumpeter along with the organist–for extra tear-jerking emotions as I walk down the aisle. I hope I don’t cry.

Unfortunately, all I hear when the march starts is the “Here comes the bride…big, fat and wide…” song from when my childhood. I don’t think I’ll be able to walk down to that one!

I totally get you. I start tearing up when I hear Canon in D. My FI warned me not to select Canon b/c I’ll be a mess by the time I reach him and the officiant. But, in my heart, I know that it’s the right song. So, go for it! Traditional or not, it’s you.

There was no way in the world I would have used Dum Dum De Dum, because my father would have disowned me for using Wagner at my wedding! LOL!

Seirously, though, I hated the tune and my father had pretty fierce Wagner issues, so that one didn’t even get considered. The Canon in D? I loved it the first time I heard it as a wedding march. Grew weary of it after eight weddings I attended and about another fifty bajillion on tv and in movies that used it.

It was my bagpiper who suggested a traditional tune called Highland Wedding. I was into the idea right away, considering I was going to wear my dance ghillies and my mother’s arisade down the aisle. Then I heard the tune and loved it. It made me feel right.

The gist of all this is, it’s about what makes you feel like a bride. Wagner’s wedding march? Hey, if it’s what floats your boat, great. Canon in D? If it’s what makes you feel the part, go for it. Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring? Pretty and not as overused. Beethoven’s Ode to Joy? Could be magnifcent. We’ve Only Just Begun? If you must. Highland Wedding made me feel like my world had opened up into something special.

Music is a very personal choice. Pick what makes you happy.
