About Mrs. Bee

Dear Weddingbee,

June 20th, 2006 @ 4:00 pm by Mrs. Bee

I was wondering if you’ve heard of married women buying fake diamond rings when they travel. I will be traveling overseas for 3 weeks and my sister-in-law suggested buying cubic zirconia rings to wear instead of wearing our real rings. This would alleviate any worry of losing our rings. Is this a common thing?

~~~
To tell you the truth, I’ve never known anyone who did that, but it’s certainly not a bad idea. If you’re really concerned about losing your rings or even being robbed, it may not be a bad idea to wear fake ones just so you have that peace of mind. You could always look into ring insurance as well, which would cover any loss or theft.
Have you worn a fake diamond in place of your real one before?
Or don’t take the rings with you. I have a lock box http://www.sentrysafe.com. I’d probably leave that off with someone. Maybe you can leave it with someone you trust, a parent? Or a saftey deposit box.
Europeans aren’t into the big flashy rings like we are & you will see very few over there (at least that’s my experience). I think a fake one is a great idea so you don’t have to worry about safety or leaving it in your room. My best friend had to wear a fake wedding ring when she was pregnant- hers wouldn’t fit :(
I don’t plan to wear my engagement ring on my honeymoon only because the diamond is an family heirloom and even though we had insurance on it, it can’t really be replaced. And we are going to a beach location where it could get messed up.
Similarly, I had a friend who worked in an outdoorsy profession so her husband gave her an inexpensive ring to wear when she was out in the field so her real rings would get messed up.
this makes a lot of sense, though at the moment, i could not imagine taking off my engagement ring for even a waking moment. maybe by the time the honeymoon rolls around, i’ll be sufficiently used to it to bear a day without it… ha!
When I vacationed in the Caribbean, I wore my promise ring instead of my engagement ring.
I have heard of rich, old ladies replacing their real diamonds with custom-cut CZs (not the mass produced CZs you see in stores like Claires) and keeping the real thing in a safe place.
I had a friend who wore a fake when she traveled for business for two reasons. 1. So her real one wouldn’t get lost or stolen and 2. To ward off creeps at bars who might try to hit on her!
I told my fiance that maybe i shouldn’t wear the ring when we go traveling, but he said he actually thinks the ring would be safer with me than sitting at home in an empty house. I thought that’s a very good point and totally agree with him. It’s not like we have a safe at home.
OH… and if you’re worried about your and the ring’s safety when traveling, maybe turn the ring around / upside down so the diamond is underneath the finger?
I don’t know if I’d turn the ring around…seems like it would be a lot more susceptible to getting banged around that way, especially if you’re not used to doing that.
I would definitely wear a fake ring while travelling, but not on my honeymoon–I’m still in a big show-off-the-ring phase! But in the future, yeah, it seems really smart.
I’m not taking my ring off! Not that anyone would bother to steal a silver frog. Still. It’s my engagement ring. If I’m that scared to wear it, what good is it? Then again, keep in mind this philosophy comes to you from a woman who chose a silver frog because she doesn’t like diamonds.
i actually used to work at sterling silver jewelry store and you wouldnt even believe how many people bought imitations of their wedding rings for honeymoons, during pregnancy (fat fingers), vacation, etc. Finding the perfect imitation was one of the most common customer requests!
