Open Question - Wedding Tents

June 23rd, 2006 @ 11:38 am by Mrs. Bee

Hello weddingbee bloggers!

I just got engaged last month and am scrambling to plan a wedding by October 21st! We are having a tent reception but I am having some problems with my caterer so I was wondering if there was any information/experience you might have? I saw 2 past blogs on tent receptions, but wanted to know if any of you actually went through it
and have any additional advice. Please let me know!

Thank you!
Keep up the great work!

Esther

Though I love tented affairs, I personally have no experience with them. Anyone have words of wisdom for Esther?

I am having a tented reception is August. It is being catered by a fav restaurant of ours, and we are hiring servers and bartender from a separate service.

Since it hasn’t happened just yet, I can’t really offer much advice. I wonder what sorts of problems there are with the caterer?

Dearest Esther,

If your heart is set on a tent wedding, you should go for it. They’re absolutely gorgeous. But you should know that tenting is a big giant pain in the arse. Or, at least, it has been for me. Mostly because it’s expensive — you’re creating your own venue out of thin air, so you need to provide everything a normal indoor space would — lighting, heating/cooling, protection from the elements/insects, furniture, and a floor.

Go with a reputable rental place — look on your local Knot boards or get a referral from another of your wedding vendors — and make sure installation and break-down is included. (Raj Tents rents nationwide, incidentally).

Martha Stewart provided a good primer in her Fall 2005 Weddings magazine. You can read a version on her website here: http://www.marthastewart.com/page.jhtml?type=content&id=channel1629&catid=cat451&navLevel=3

To give you an idea of the cost, my tent fits about 125 people, and is $3,000. The lighting is an extra $1,000 or so. The heaters are $100/each. I’m also doing a lining. With the dancefloor and various accoutrements, it’s coming out to about $8,000. This does not include the rental cost of linens, tables, and china. If your venue is relatively low cost, I think it all ends up evening out in the end.

Good luck! And be sure to send pictures!

if you want a tented wedding. Consider New Leaf Cafe up at Washington height. It is the most efficent way to do a tented wedding in nyc, i think. and the place is so beautiful

I asked for their package info today.

its $145 pp for four course dinner and open bar for five hours with a 120 people minimum guarantee

the tent which can be set up on their patio is $3500 including a dance floor. the tent is about 40x 55. That includes all the chair, linens, and flatware rentals

THANK YOU SO much for all your great advice!
My caterer just has been really unresponsive. He would basically take care of setting up the tent and including it in the price of the meal per person, but he WILL NOT RETURN my calls! I am getting very frustrated so i was thinking about doing it on my own, going through a tent company and finding a separate caterer. We’ll have to see if it will work out…Thanks again ladies!

Hi Esther,

I’ll have my wedding on Oct 21 2006 too, but I’ll have the reception indoor. I’ve never been to a tent wedding before, but I can imagine it’ll be so much fun (outdoor with a nice Oct weather, that’s so great). I’d like to congratulate on your wedding and have fun planning for the big day. Please keep us update with your tent wedding plan.

Good Luck,
