About Mrs. Daisy

The Hardware

June 23rd, 2006 @ 10:01 am by Mrs. Daisy

Since Audrey asked after my ring, over in the beehive, I thought I ought to post a pic.

As I mentioned in the comments there, I ended up with a cushion-cut stone after a lifetime of lusting after Asschers and emeralds… Now Mr. Daisy and I knew we were getting engaged (from just about the moment we met), so we did have some ring discussion pre-engagement. His thoughts were that if he were about to drop a fair amount of money on a ring, it probably should be something I would enjoy wearing. So I told him how I adored the Asscher and it was absolutely, 100% the ring for me.

asscherdiashdrs.jpg
Not my ring… Just an Asscher example.

The only fly in the ointment, was that I just had no clue as to what kind of a setting I wanted. We went all around the city checking out various Asscher cuts in various settings and I quickly became discouraged. None of them looked nearly as elegant on my hand as they did in the jewel case. Then, at Graff, they had a knife edge band that I wanted to see, but it had a cushion-cut stone in it rather than an Asscher. I tried it on anyway and, much to my surprise, fell in *love* with the cut. It was what worked for me and though I had previously eschewed anything but a step-cut, I was loving the bling-y sparkle.

Some months later, Mr. Daisy proposed; I burst into tears; I said “yes” at least once; and then I noticed that the ring-which was (is and will always be) secondary to my unfettered joy at the thought of marrying this amazing fellow-was just perfect. Well, perfect for me, anyhow!

(I apologize for the blurry/dark photo-I have not yet mastered my new camera’s “Macro” mode.)

Did anyone else have a complete change of heart as to ring choice? Or did you/do you plan to stick to your guns?

It is beautiful! Yes, I had a total change to. My dream wedding set was always a yellow gold solitaire with a simple diamond band. I havebeen married 7 years and wear a white gold set. The engagement ring has a large stone in the middle with two tear drop shapes on each side - with a diamond in the middle of each. The engagment band is white gold interlocking circles set with my husbands birthstone in each circle. I could not have imaged a set this perfect for me:) It helps that his birthston is also my favorite color, lol.

I wanted Asscher, but when I saw it in person vs. the Princess, for the same carat weight, the Princess looked a lot bigger. The Asschers weight is all on bottom. So I chose the princess for economical reasons. I’d have to get around a 2 carat Asscher to get the look I wanted. The place I went also had something called a cushette cut, which was like a cushion cut with more cuts. Very nice.
This link is from when I was looking for diamonds, it has the princess vs. the cushette.

And this is what I ended up with

My ring and proposal were a complete surprise, so there was no choosing or trying on. Luckily, Mr. Caterpillar went very traditional — brilliant cut with a platinum band — so I have no complaints.

Although, two days before he proposed we were walking through a street fair and saw a large display of costume jewelry. He pulled me over to look at the rings, and I said, “I H A T E brilliant cut diamonds. I like the emerald cut best!” To his credit, he didn’t miss a beat. We kept walking and he changed the subject.

The first thing he said after he proposed? “You can exchange that ring for the one you want, you know.” hahahahahahaha

I didn’t switch by the way.

Love the ring! My change of heart was that I originally said I didn’t even want one, but then decided that it wouldn’t feel “official” without a ring. Luckily, my grandmother had left me her gorgeous wedding set from 1946, so that’s what he proposed with. I loved the princess cut and thought that’s what my grandmother’s was, but it actually turned out to be a brilliant cut with a squared-off setting (common before they figured out square cuts, I understand), so I get the sparkle of the brilliant and the great shape of a square cut (plus a wonderful family heirloom)!

Thanks for sharing! Your ring is beautiful! It’s very very similiar to my DREAM ring that I’ve been running all over town trying to get it replicated haha. I like that your cushion is more square than rectangular. That’s the look I’m going for as well :-)

But as to sticking to my guns, I’m not sure. The BF and I have been looking and narrowed it down to my Dream ring, and the Michael Bies design with a pave band and a brilliant solitaire. The Michael Bies ring looks really good on my hand, and it’s so feminine and delicate! I love the gorgeous bling! The disadvantave of having to custom create the Dream Ring is that I won’t really know what it looks like on me until it’s done.

So in the end, I’m going to let him decide between the two and it’ll still be a “surprise” for me :-D

Gorgeous Gorgeous ring Ms. Daisy! I love all the details. It obviously is a very well-crafted ring!

Audrey, my e-ring is Michael B’s! It’s a solataire, round, brilliant cut, with pave setting. I never noticed much about pave setting before.. in fact I had always “thought” I wanted the channel setting style. But when my fiance proposed and when the ring was in front of me, I couldn’t believe how gorgeous and perfect it is. The pave setting definitely makes the ring look very feminine and delicate…it makes the entire ring very sparkly. The name of the line is called “Princess”, and it definitely makes you feel like one :-).The ring is entirely handmade so it took about 3-4 weeks to make. But trust me, you won’t regret it!

What a gorgeous ring! My fiance proposed with his grandmother’s ring and then we put the diamonds into a new setting. I had all these ideas of what I wanted (emerald sidestones, lots of engraving and vintage looking details) but then I saw a wedding band that I fell in love with and we decided to have the new e-ring designed to match it. Still waiting for it to come back from the jeweler’s, I can’t wait to se it!

isn’t jewelry just the funnest? my ring was actually designed by Mr. Daisy (with abundant assistance from my mom) and custom-made by a jeweler in L.A. (from whom he also got the stone).

i wish all of you could put pictures in the comments, because i am dying to see the rings! (yes, even looking at rings pleases me almost as much as wearing one.)

Love the ring! It’s gorgeous!

I had my heart set on a three-stone ring with just round cut diamonds…I kept telling my fiance that it was the only thing I wanted…well on June 7th, he surprised me with something completely different! He found a ring online that looked ok but he re-designed parts of it to fit me…added a little sapphire (my birthstone) on the inside of the band..and had it custom made :)

I can’t believe how much time and effort he put into it! Apparently everyone at work knew it was coming b/c he was on the phone with diamond dealers for months :)
