Weddingbee Tweaks

June 26th, 2006 @ 1:30 pm by Mrs. Bee

Happy Monday Weddingbee readers! Hope you had a nice weekend despite all the rain, thunder, and lightning - oh my!

Many of you have asked how we make money here at Weddingbee. The short answer is: we don’t! :( But we’ve been putting gears in motion to launch ads, so we can make some money and re-invest in the site. Mr. Bee’s brother has been helping out and mocking up how ads might look - please check out his proposed design here:

http://www.weddingbee.com/weddingbee/redesign.htm

The highlights:

  • Drop-down menu tabs have been added to the top of the page where you’ll now find the categories, bloggers, and archives sections.
  • A new tab called “blog” has been added where you can quickly access the 12 most recent posts. This eliminates the need for scrolling, and you can even see how many comments each post has!
  • Wedding dates have been added beside each blogger’s name.
  • The search and email boxes have been moved to above the bride’s head.
  • Sample text ads appear to the right.

We’ve been very careful with the ads, so that they don’t overwhelm the site. I also wanted to check with our readers before we launched these changes. Did the ads turn out ok? Please let us know what you think!

I like it. I like the drop down options, too and the ads are there but not overpowering like a banner ad or something.

Are you also going to keep the scrolling and ‘previous entries’ button an option? Because with 10 uploads per day - sometimes I am at least 12 posts behind and I would hate to have to seach all the categories for any posts that I missed! Other than that it looks good…have you thought about putting the ‘links’ and ‘more’ sections up in the drop downs too? You could either give the bride some of her dress back or add a few more ads.

Good idea to sell ad spaces so you guys can actually make some money, but as long as your opinions are not affected by the advertisers in any way! I work in the media industry doing advertising, and we get so many requests from advertisers to write good reviews about them and if we don’t they will not advertise / or they threaten to stop advertising. It’s a pain in the a** to deal with that. We also feel “censored’ sometimes because if we happen to write something negative when reviewing an advertiser, oh my all hell breaks loose. As many people have pointed out, one of the many great things about Weddingbee is that you guys are honest and “real”. So please keep that integrity no matter how much pressure you might get once you start selling ads. Good luck with everything!

i think the number of ads is fine, and not overwhelming. but it would be nice to see the whole bride - it’s such a cute graphic!

I think it looks great. It’s a nice minor design update, so readers/users will be less likely to rage as we can when we do not like a redesign (or maybe that’s just me?).

I love the drop down menu, it’s make the site easier to browse with scrolling. The ads are well placed and not very distracting.

Nice work! The knot boards could take some redesign tips from this site :)

I pretty much agree with what everyone else has said–especially about seeing the whole bride again! Would the complete archives be available or just the past few months (as it currently is on the redesign).

i like the new look, esp the drop down menu tabs. will there be a tab for beehives? i don’t remember seeing it on the test site.

We will most likely eliminate categories and transition into tags which will be more effective in locating specific information. So there will be a tag called “beehives.”

I think it looks great, much more user friendly and is easy to navigate with the drop down buttons. Maybe the next button will be a “Seach” button for even quicker queries? -)

i love my weddingbee(s)!
