Wedding Wake-Up Call

June 28th, 2006 @ 8:41 am by Mrs. Daisy

Much to my dismay, the following face appeared when I entered my weight into Weight Watchers’ online “weight tracker” feature.

face.bmp

For those of you who are robots and, thus, unable to interpret emotions, that is *not* a happy face. That’s right, Weight Watchers is not happy with my gain of +1 pound(s). Now, to be fair, this weight gain is since December, when I had already lost 9 pounds on WW, and was the last time I was so brave as to enter my weight into the tracker. You see, the engagement and the holidays caused me to gain back most of the 10 lbs. I had already lost on WW, between September and December. Slowly but surely, I have managed to re-lose all but 2 of those pounds. Which would otherwise be impressive if not for the additional 20 lbs. that I need to lose on top of the first 10.

They do hold out hope for me, though, as the computer tried to take the sting out of its grouchy face with this oh-so-inspirational quote:

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”
- Eleanor Roosevelt

So now I embark upon my no holds barred weight loss regime. This involves much kicking of my ass on the part of Matt Hayes, and his intense “bridal boot camp” program. Matt used to be in the Army and does not f around when it comes to torturing me. In addition to the two to three times a week that he comes to train me, I am now on an everyday, no excuses workout program.

My week thus far and looking ahead:

  • Sunday: cardio combo: rowing and treadmill
  • Monday: obscenely difficult “homework” weight training (i.e. weight without Matt)
  • Tuesday: cardio combo: rowing
  • Wednesday: Matt and his bag of torture
  • Thursday: cardio
  • Friday: Matt again!
  • Saturday: more Matt…

And my diet? Also, medieval. Yesterday, for example, I ate the following:

  • Breakfast: Quaker Weight Control oatmeal (3 pts.)
  • Lunch: Campbell’s Select microwavable lentil soup (3.5 pts.) and 6 oz. of WW yogurt (1 pt.)
  • Snack: Quaker rice cake with one wedge Laughing Cow Lite cheese (2 pts.)
  • Dinner: Lean Cuisine Enchiladas Suiza (5 pts.)
  • Dessert: Blue Bunny HealthSmart ice cream pop (0 pts.–miraculous!)

This is no fun at all. But since the wedding rapidly approaches, I need to focus up and stop screwing around. If anyone has *any* great diet tricks to share, I would greatly appreciate them. I am desperate!!

Girl, you are going to starve on that diet! With all the exercise you are going to get, you need to incorporate alot more protein and much less processed food (which will stifle your weight loss efforts and leave you bloated). Each meal should have an equal amount of protein and carbohydrates, like egg beaters and oatmeal for breakfast, tuna on whole wheat for lunch, chicken, brown rice, and broccoli for dinner. I’d be happy to help if you are interested. Email me anytime!

I’m no dietician or trainer, but what’s worked for me is:

Lots and lots of fresh veggies (I have at least two salads w/ fat free dressing every day, usually before dinner and as a midnight snack)

Tons of skim milk (nutritious, and fills you up!)

And, I’m sure you knew this…but water water water water water!

Ooh and I just discovered that the best breakfast in the WORLD is mini shredded wheat cereal w/ fresh fruit, Splenda and skim milk. Get a bowl of that in me and I’m good for 4 or 5 hours!

Sorry I don’t know much about meat–I’m a vegetarian!

I think you could add a few more vegetables to this diet (just based on your meals from yesterday)–they offer you fiber. A high fiber diet is known to help with weight loss. Here is a quick read about why fiber is so great: http://www.menshealth.com/cda/article.do?site=MensHealth&channel=fitness&category=motivation&conitem=3ba09ab818348010VgnVCM200000cee793cd____

Don’t eat anything after 7pm. You will notice a difference of at least a couple pounds within a week.

I never been on a diet but it works for most folks:
1. Lots of water
2. Eat slowly
3. Boil water with few BAY LEAVES. I know, I know…but if you drink it everyday you’ll loose weight (my grlfrd lost 8 pounds in 2 weeks eating less and drinking this!)

oh, thanks, you guys!!
i was hoping you would come through and you have not disappointed!

Charlene, as for rowing, Matt (my trainer) tells me that i need to change up my cardio so that i don’t get into a rut. apparently, rowing works the entire body since you pull with your arms and also push off with your legs.

Miss Grasshopper and Jamie, thanks for the “healthier” eating advice. i think Monday was a bit more anomalous of a day since i was stuck at work until 8… yesterday i had time to cook a dinner, rather than nuke one, and had a chicken breast with steamed veggies and mushrooms. but i definitely am trying to move away from processed foods toward ones i’ve cooked myself– i think tomorrow i will make a vat of soup in the slow cooker and then have lunches for the next week that are *unprocessed*.

Okay, good idea! As far as the b ay leaf tea? Ew! lol… Yogitea makes a good “bloat reducing” tea called “DeTox Tea.” Tastes good, and no boiling of leaves, just water and a tea bag.

LOTS of WATER. also, eat smaller meals 5 times a day. (i’m a big believer that premade food is bad for you unless it was freshly made) The more often you eat, the faster your metabolism works. I used the FAT SMASH DIET (amazon.com) and followed the first phase to a T, and then improvised the rest, and my bf lost 15 lbs and I lost 10. It also teaches you to eat healthier for the rest of your life so you can maintain the weight you lose. Check it out! Good luck!

Spinning class will be the best cardio you can get. I love LOVE it! Also interval training is good. Mix up high resistence to low, and do speed drills either on treadmill or elliptical. Or mix 5 min cardio, then do a set of weights then back to 5 min of cardio for 30min to an hour. See what you feel comfortable with.

I know that eating more veggies, smaller portions, less junk, and exercising will help me lose weight. My problem isn’t knowing these things- it’s FOLLOWING them! (What can I say? Chocolate makes me weak at the knees!)

Some tricks I’ve used to help my will power- 1) eliminating unhealthy snacks around the house. That way, if I want to munch on something, I’ll grab some nuts or fruit instead of chips. 2) setting my password to something that reminds me to be healthy. If I’m typing in “eatveggies” a dozen times a day, it might get through to me. 3) get a buddy to eat healthy with you. the buddy system works, whether you’re the competitive type or you like encouragement.

Hope that helps!

What everyone said was great. Never been on a diet, but the fiber (veggies), protein, water and unprocessed foods sound like the way to go. Also, it’s okay to have a treat now and again. A piece of dark chocolate here and there is good for you, mentally and physically. Tea is great.

I would add that you should make sure to take your vitamins! You didn’t say anything about them. They’re not food. But I think they are great overall and could help with metabolism, fighting off any colds or infections (which can majorly disrupt a workout plan), etc. As a woman, don’t forget to get enough calcium!

ah, yes, the vitamins. i actually take a “women’s” multi-vitamin daily (some One-A-Day variation). that and water consumption (8 glasses) are actually required by the Weight Watchers points tracker. as are 3 milk/calcium servings, and 5 servings of fruits/vegetables.

i actually have a fresh fruit allergy (bizarre, admittedly, and also annoying) so cannot grab an apple or another fiber-filled healthy snack in that vein. it’s lame, but i do try to sub mini-carrots and broccoli as snacks…

Daisy good luck with the diet! I have lost 15 lbs since March for my sister’s wedding in Sept. I really have only been watching my calorie intact and been trying to get at least 45 mins of exercise a day. Keep up the good work :)

I work for Weight Watcher now and I can tell you that with a daily diet like that - we would expect you to gain weight! The reason you have the number of points that you start off with is to keep your metabolism running at the right rate. When your body thinks you are starving it starts hoarding everything - you actually have to eat more to lose than you are right now! Also, you’ll need more to keep going with that workout schedule (good job - by the way). I would suggest more fruits and veggies (5 per day at least), more water (6 per day), and another full serving of milk. By my calcs that will get you anywhere from 17 to 23 points. Depending on where you are 23 points is much better but if you could add some more whole grains or more fruits/veggies that would be great too. The program is designed to lose weight at the daily points plus the flex points - so even just not eating the flex points will boost your loss - but you really should try to add some points for activity.

I know (boy - do I!) that eating more is really counter intuitive - just make sure that all the more stuff you eat is good, healthy stuff!

My FI lost 20lb on South Beach. He followed it to the letter for the first 2 weeks and then introduced whole grains. It really worked for him because he never felt like he was starving!!!

gji7 (and other concerned folks), i should have been clearer in my post– on mostly every day i use all of my daily WW points and a couple of flex points too. i try not to use my activity points, but on occasional days where i do a lot of cardio and am extra hungry, i do use those also.

i apologize for using an abnormal day as a sample of my diet. it just happened to be the day that i got inspired stop making excuses, stick to my plan and blog it all to keep me honest…

i.e., today i have eaten my oatmeal, a whole wheat bread/lean ham sandwich and many baby carrots. and it’s only 2pm!

i’m doing weightwatchers right now and thought i would just add in a couple of my favorite point-friendly foods. a quick and easy 2 pt breakfast is a cup of puffins cereal with 1/2 cup of 1% milk. if you have a trader joe’s near you, they have frozen steelcut oatmeal which is two pts per serving. it has brown sugar and maple syrup and is quite yummy. thomas’ makes a 1 pt english muffin that has 8 grams of fiber. amy’s organic brand has a tamale pie that’s 2 pts and works great for lunch or dinner with a salad. also, if you like ice cream sandwiches (think carvel’s flying saucer), check out skinny cow sandwiches which are 2-3 pts each. basically, what i do to keep from getting to hungry is to eat foods with protein and lots of fiber. oh, and water… lots of water all day long! helps to keep you full and also keeps your skin clear! hope this helps! :)

Well, I’ve lost 70 pounds since December on the South Beach Diet. It’s not for everyone, but I love it! And if you do it like a month before your wedding, you’ll be down 15 pounds, guaranteed. :)

I’ve done WW before- and the secret is to eat ALL your points plus the weekly “extra” points… drink all your water and then some, eat your veggies/fruits… work the plan! It really does wonders :)
