Open Question: Sunburn Solutions

July 4th, 2006 @ 6:45 am by Mrs. Bee

Do you have any sunburn remedies?? I’m using aloe vera right now… but I’m starting to blister up!

But more importantly, what to do about the hideous farmer’s tan/watch tan that I got last Saturday? I totally brain-farted about the sunblock and forgot my arms…. and it’s a disaster. I have 54 days to fix this… or I’m going to look like I’m wearing a T-shirt and invisible watch over my strapless gown!!!

Please help!

For the watch tan, you can easily cover it up with a beautiful bracelet! And maybe you can make the tshirt tan less obvious by covering up with a lace, satin, or sheer chiffon shrug or bolero

Saeyoung vu has a big selection… (hit “next” for more)

Definitely don’t try to fix it by tanning even more while you’re burnt! That’s a big NoNO..

Good luck. =o)

I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM!! I have the worst T-shirt tan!!!

1) I’ve tried Mystic tan…doesn’t work!!!
2) I’ve tried laying out on the beach….hasn’t worked so far!!!
3) Don’t try self tanner!! It might come out blotchy!!!

So…I’ve pretty much given up….I just think I’ll have the worst skin/tan in the world when I wear my strapless gown =(

When the going gets tough, it’s time for body foundation. MAC makes a nice thick one. Just make sure you find a good match for your skin!

For the sunburn (I am the sunburn queen-put SPF 50 on twice on Sunday and still got burnt and I’m babysitting bf who has one right now - I feel for you):

DRINK A LOT OF WATER. Especially if it’s starting to blister!!! That’s your body’s cry for moisture to cool that area.

You need to put cold cloths on to cool it down. It’s gonna keep heating up and burning until it can get to normal body temp again. 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off is good.

Try NOT to use Aloe. It masks the pain and actually can stiffen it worse.

Take an advil, ibuprofen, tylenol- whatever. It will take away the sting and ease some of the ache.

If you do end up blistering, put gauze over the blisters and tape it down (usually tape on a non-burnt part. You can buy really long gauze too) before you put on clothes or even lay down. Blisters can pop and it’s not only painful but a little messy and it’s not just water in there so it can stain. Also, the open blister can get infected. Change the gauze every 12 hours or so until the blisters are gone.

Once the burn has subsided (no more pain, not warm to the touch) THEN you can use lotion with aloe (DO NOT USE LOTION UNTIL THEN - Aloe is okay, but not recommended but NO LOTION WHILE STILL BURNT! It traps in heat!) to prevent you from peeling. If you do peel, lotion lotion lotion.

54 days? You have plenty of time to fix the problem. If you were to lay out three more times in a bathing suit, your farmer’s tan would disappear.

1. avoid using soap on the burns.
2. drink lots of water
3. shower in cool water, not hot
4. resist the temptation and do not pick at the skin/blisters/peeling
5. pain permitting, mosturize with vitamin E lotion at night before bed
6. apply aloe vera gel during the day
7. do not tan anymore until the burn fades. this will not even out your tan, only provoke your skin more.

Lavender oil applied to those cool water cloths is also good for burns. And if you start to blister and peel, pay close attention to the shade of your skin after you’ve recovered. You may find that you don’t have as much of a tan as you think. If you do, apply SPF 50+ to the already tanned areas and SPF 5 to the untanned areas and go out for short periods of time (one hour or less).

I’ve also heard that lemon juice is a natural bleach and can lighten skin back to its normal shade (meaning if you’re born dark, it won’t work). I think it takes several repeated applications of about 10 minutes each, so it’s not instantaneous. But you have time! I’m guessing you should do this after the sunburn has receded though b/c it may be painful otherwise.
