The Bridesmaid Survival Guide

July 4th, 2006 @ 8:54 pm by Mrs. Bee

Reader Diane sent us a link to this article about how expensive it is nowadays to be a bridesmaid.

According to wedding site TheKnot.com, bridesmaids can pay as much as $1,400 per wedding.

This may be the happiest day of the bride’s life — but does it have to be the most expensive day of yours? For many bridesmaids it can be, because tradition and expectation have merged into a giant snowball of expenses.

With bridesmaid dresses, alterations, shoes, accessories, undergarments, hair, make-up, pre-wedding parties, gifts, travelling expenses… it’s easy to see how it can all add up! When I was a maid of honor in my friend’s wedding, the bride paid for all our dresses, hair, and make-up. But with the bridal shower, Vegas bachelorette party, and gifts, I still ended up spending over $1000.

I think it’s definitely up to the bride to keep expectations and costs reasonable for their bridemaids - especially if some of them are on a tight budget. But the article does go on to say that ultimately, being a bridesmaid is not just about money, and it is an honor to be asked.

Total cost for being a bridesmaid: $1,000. Standing next to your best friend while she marries the man of her dreams: Priceless.

I couldn’t agree more.

As a bride, how much are you expecting your bridesmaids to spend on your wedding? As a bridesmaid, how much are you expecting to spend?

My bridesmaids each have paid:

80 dollars for dresses (i covered 100 of each of them)
Alterations (ranges from 2 dollars because my MOH and I did hers on our own to I don’t know how much the others paid)
Shoes about 25 (i actually had them all buy some cute flip flops at first then had them go buy other shoes when I changed my mind)
Hair and Make up (it’s up to them if they are going to get it professionally done or not… more than likely none of us will since my sister and MOH are both very good with it)
Traveling they all paid a fair amount. My MOH: almost 600; the others: about 400 each
other accessories/expenses probably 20 dollars each….
Total:
between 525 and 750 bucks!

…and I’ve tried to keep the costs for them down!

I have one bridesmaid. She lives in LA and has flown up once so far for the sole purpose of my wedding-related stuff (she helped me pick my dress!). We’re paying for her dress, MU, hair. She bought her own shoes from Nordstrom Rack, and probably will pay upfront for her own alterations too, since she’s getting it done in LA. I’m not expecting a bridal shower or bachelorette party from her, so I hope I have kept her expenses down!=)

My BM’s flew in from overseas so I didnt want them to pay any additional expenses. I covered their:

* dresses
* jewelry
* hair and makeup
* hotel acccomodation x 2 nights

They wouldnt let me pay for their shoes even though I wanted to.

My bridesmaids’ costs are as follows:

- Dress: approx. $200 (the dresses are $375, and i will subsidize them by paying between $175 and $200)
- Alterations: not more than $40
- Shoes: they can wear any shoes they want– old, new, borrowed…
- Hair: approx. $75 (or whatever a blowout costs where they go)
- Makeup: i’m paying for that
- Shower: is being thrown by a friend of my mom
- Bachelorette Party: will definitely be local likely a dinner and maybe karaoke… all told maybe $150/each (at most)
- Travel: my bridesmaids all live locally (a subway ride away or, in one case, an elevator ride) and although my sister (MOH) lives in SF, my parents are flying her out here.

Total: approx. $465

$275 for the dress (I know, expensive, but they picked it), $25 for shoes, travel and Inn costs are prob. $300 - $500. I’m paying for their hair to be done, earings, an extra sash for the dress. I’m not sure how much they are paying for the shower, but its going to be a picnic style event. I’m traveling to the shower, and traveled to look at dresses (3 trips all together).

my bridesmaid are paying $180 for the dress (i’m keeping it under 200), shoes they can wear whatever they have since the dress is long…. hair and makeup, they’re already beautiful so i told them to do what they want. i did tell them i don’t want a party/shower but instead have a get to know the bridal party/rehearsal dinner type before the wedding. so that we can all have fun and not spend so much money. i know when i was a bridesmaid i spent so much i literally almost went broke and i don’t want to do that to my girls. :)

My bridesmaid’s expenses vary, as some are local gals, and some will have to do some traveling. I’ve allowed them to pick out their own dresses, within a few guidelines. My sister’s dress was $9, my Matron of Honor’s was $70. Same deal for the shoes, jewelry, etc. Trying to keep expenses as low as possible.

I have 3 bridesmaids.

Dress: I picked a dress that was about $180 but I found them online and they are ordering for just under $150 plus whatever alterations they need (but can take to anybody).
Shoes: They can pick whatever black silk/satin heel they want
Makeup & Hair: Up to them if they want to get it done, but not requiring.
Shower: I won a contest for the venue and my mother is paying the overage and doing favors/decorations herself, so no added cost for them other than the gift.
Bachelorette- 2 nights in montreal. Hotel comes to about $160pp for the weekend. We’re driving so just a few bucks for gas and then whatever dinner/going out costs.

So “required” cost is about $315, plus gifts and going out costs in Montreal.

Just was a bridesmaid and paid $165 for dress, $50 for shoes, $20 for shower chip-in (we just did favors/games), about $120 for bachelorette party. $355 for that one plus gifts.

I either bought dresses or had the girls buy them in their hometowns and let me reimburse them (only one let me reimburse her). All need to fly and I offered to pay for travel, but no one let me do that. Most have family in town, but those who don’t, I am getting accomodations for. I am not expecting a shower, a girls’ night out, a spa day and am buyng their accessories. If they paid its because they wouldn’t take my money!

Well, I’m an ultra-poor college student in the Midwest, so my costs were substantially lower than coast bridesmaids, but all in all (dress, alterations, shower + wedding gift) I paid $225. The bride told us to wear black open toe shoes (which I already owned) and a mutual friend did hair and makeup for 4 of us.

Dress $37 at Loehmanns
Shoes- stuff they already own
Accessories- I’m making
Shower was at the beach! Potluck!
So I guess the only thing that’ll cost anything substantial would be my bachelorette party…
But we’re going to Mexico… so that’s pretty darn cheap too~
(they’re all college students… or interns…)

My bridesmaids expenses:
Dress- $105
Alterations- $50 (average)
Shoes- they can wear whatever, new or ones they already had
Hair- they can do it themselves if they wanted
Make-up- I’m paying for it
Shower- thrown by my Aunts
Bachelorette party- $50 in room costs then whatever they paid for food and going out
Traveling- all live within a few miles os myself and the wedding location

I was definitely conscious about what they had to pay for.
