Probably, but most people don’t attend enough weddings to notice.

To a certain extent - the pocketfold invitations, bathroom baskets, out of town bags… yes we do a lot of the same things. But I must be as immersed in weddings as you can get and I’m still not sick of them. People interpret things differently, add their personal touches, and there are still many ways to convey your personality and style - music, decor, etc. to make the event your own.

I think as a bride, you can get super-saturated with all these ideas & it feels like everybody is doing them. However, most people that aren’t on the internet everyday researching & planning thier weddings, so these ideas will mostly be novel & fun for them. Some things we feel are common & take for granted, lots of our guests have never seen. There is still lots of room for creativity in new ways with old ideas. Good luck!

When you think about, visualize, imagine, and plan something extensively even something that really truly is an original thought or idea can seem done a million times over. Case in point: I am having a wedding “cake” made of Greek wedding cookies artfully arranged. I thought I was the only person to have the idea, but now it seems as if I’m seeing non-cake “cakes” all over the place. I still haven’t seen one of Greek wedding cookies, but I wouldn’t be surprised if I do before the big day.

It’s sort of like the experience where you’re car shopping, have a make and model in mind, and as soon as you think of it you start noticing that everybody and their mother is driving the very car you like! There aren’t actually an especially high number of them on the road; you’re just highly aware of those that are.

To your guests, who probably only attend a few weddings a year (if that many), your wedding will seem special and unique with ANY personal touches you incorporate. No two weddings are ever exactly alike, and no two couples are, either! No matter what you do it will be a personal, enjoyable experience for you and your guests–just keep it personal and hey, if everyone else has pocketfold invitations and sparklers for the grand send-off, so what?

BTW, what’s a bathroom basket?

katie - a bathroom basket is a basket full of toiletries people might need - bobby pins, safety pins, hairspray, feminine products, etc.

Everyone really used the stuff we put in ours. One for the women’s bathroom, one for the men’s.

what about gathering with girlfriends and brainstorming. with some champagne. ok lots of champagne. and piles of mags. it would surely put some juice in your planning! i’m a big fan of standing out from the crowd…but i also believe that the best and freshest ideas can blossom from the tried and true ones.

Great idea! Must incorporate it! I was already planning on something like that for myself and attendants.

Well, personalized and “new” wedding ideas are nice and all…. but it’s definitely not the most important thing.
Like my fiance put it,
“As long as I’m married to you at the end of the day.. I’m fine”

I think people who attend weddings aren’t looking to be wow-ed by our creativity. They’re coming to witness the union of two people. That’s it.
(and food ^^)

Question for the hive - I did not own a lot of jewelry before getting my engagement ring and wedding band (maybe some of you are the same?). Now I’m getting more into accessorizing and hopefully my husband will add to my jewelry collection again someday! Has anyone found a nicely designed and practical jewelry box?

Andrea–I love jewelry! I have a pretty good variety–since I was a teenager I’ve gotten jewelry from my parents for Valentine’s Day, my birthday, and Christmas.

What kind of jewelry box are you looking for? A big wooden stand-alone jewelry and lingerie chest? Or a more portable box, perhaps in a nice leather? I’m not in NY so I don’t know of any good shops there, but I love Bombay’s stuff:

Red envelope has some lovely ones as well (and lots of stuff is personalizable–great for BM and GM gifts!)

Personally, I have three jewelry boxes: a small velvet-lined gold one I received as a Junior BM gift when I was a kid that I use for my “daily” jewelry (engagement ring, watch, the two sets of earrings I wear almost every day), a wooden dresser-top for most of my other “nice” stuff, and a black leather travel case that I use, well, when travelling! For my costume jewelry I have a cheap plastic stack of drawers (actually picked it up in Target’s “kids’ room” section).

One thing I’d suggest is to keep your nice stuff separate from your costume jewelry–I used to keep it all mixed together until one day I unwittingly wore one big ol’ CZ stud earring and one smaller diamond one. :-P Not to mention that costume jewelry can harm delicate things like pearls and opals (I keep my pearls and opals in the boxes they came in to keep them separate, anyway).

Hope you find the perfect jewelry box, and remember–buy for the collection you HOPE to have, not that you currently DO have–you don’t want to be dropping $300+ every couple years for a bigger jewelry box!

Edit: I’m so sorry that URL is so long! Hope it’s not messing up anyone’s browser window.

Thanks Katie! Looks like there are some good options on both sites. I’ll have to take a good look through and I’m sure I’ll decide on one of those. Also, very good idea to have separate boxes for fine and custom jewelry. Glad I asked the Beehive!
