Open Question: Wedding Books

July 14th, 2006 @ 12:51 pm by Mrs. Bee

I love reading this blog. I actually reward myself with it. For every task I complete I check your blog to see if anything has been updated. Here’s my question though - If there was only one book I could use to plan my wedding which book should I get? I’m interested to know your “go-to” book. Thanks Ladies!!

you know something I bought a wedding planning book, back when we set the date and all - and I opened it maybe… twice. It was really a nice book, Simple Stunning Wedding Organizer by Karen Bussen - but I just didn’t need it really.

There are so many great tools at your finger tips on the internet (especially this site!).

Most sites have checklists and tips that you can print and create your own wedding book from. I know Bliss does and Martha, The Knot, etc.

I haven’t read all that many wedding books, so there may be an end all/be all book out there I don’t know about…

Some people swear by certain books, but for me personally I’ve always found blogs and messageboards to be the most helpful. I did buy a planner - it was called simply chic - but I never even used it. I ended up making my own with a binder, dividers, and clear plastic inserts.

If you’re looking for books to give you ideas and inspiration, i like karn bussen’s simple stunning weddings and jo gartin’s weddings.

I hope this helps! =)

I would definitely go with a wedding planner in a binder type format. This is the one I bought last year when planning our wedding…hubs actually suggested we get one.

The Bride’s Essential Wedding Planner: From Yes to I Do and Beyond by Amy Nebens

I picked this b/c it had comparison charts for vendors of every detail of the wedding planning process (ie ceremony location, officiant, limos, invitations etc.) The charts list all relevant questions you should ask when meeting with a vendor which was great b/c I didn’t have to worry about calling a vendor after a meeting b/c I forgot to ask a certain question. I brought it with me to all vendor appointments and made notes. It also has pocket folders in each section to keep receipts, ideas, etc. I think the newest version is in a 3 binder format which makes it easier to attach your ideas or clippings from wedding magazines.

Someone just gave me Bridal Bargains. I haven’t read a lot of it, but it seems to have great information and tips for planning a wedding on a budget.

Blogs and wedding forums are definitely the most comprehensive sources of wedding advice… But if you want a book laying it all out for you, the two I read way at the beginning when I was overwhelmed with the idea of planning this huge event were “Weddings for Dummies” (sounds silly, I know, but it really helped to set everything out!), and “Bridal Bargains” (which has LOADS of great, classy, cost-effective suggestions).

I found “Bridal Bargains” to be the only book I thought was really worth the price as far as planning goes. No matter your budget, it has great practical tips from people who are actually advocates of brides and grooms, unlike most of the wedding industry (I think).

It’s funny, but Simple Stunning Weddings is the other book I adored, but I haven’t seen many other people mention it, except for this post! You can liev without it, but I found its philosophy to be very helpful when I was stressing out about decor decisions (stick to the rule of 1-2-3 and never have more than three variations of anything, and let your location be the basis of your design choices). Once I realized I should use the location as inspiration, my entire wedding unfolded naturally from there.
