About Mrs. Grasshopper

A Lesson Learned

July 18th, 2006 @ 2:53 pm by Mrs. Grasshopper

Last week I went for my first dress fitting at the Gown Company. My Mom came with me and I told her I was well prepared that there was a good chance I might not like it again, as I have heard several brides talk about not loving their dress when trying it on for the first time after buying it many months earlier. She didn’t think that would be the case as I kept revisiting this same style dress in every dress shop we visited.

I tried it on and I liked it fine. It will certainly do the job for the day of the wedding, but I wasn’t weeping in joy over it. I am not a weeper, I didn’t weep when Mr. Grasshopper and I got engaged, so I probably can’t expect to weep over this dress. I am, however, feeling weepy that I didn’t pursue a Jenny Lee dress I had seen online but knew I wouldn’t be able to see in person until February as the spring line was not coming out until then. I was told by the sales person that a February order would be too late for my September wedding. Sigh. Why do I listen to these people?

As this title suggests, here are the things I have learned about buying a wedding gown that I would like to share with other brides-to-be:

1. DO visit another state to go try on the dress you think you want, if that state has it.

2. Do NOT keep visiting another dress online AFTER you have bought a different dress.

3. If you can, pay for the rush fee if it means making the right decision on your dress.

4. Don’t get worked up about a dress you did not buy if you have not even tried on said dress (yet). :)

i went to sleep dreaming about a different dress last night and I woke up sad thinking about my own. In the end, i know i have a beautiful dress, but now i know why when i first got it I said it’s so pretty but not what I would’ve expected me to get. My taste is a bit funkier and modern and the dress i bought is very pretty, elegant and does have a bit of uniqueness.. The dress (or multiple dresses by a particular designer) I have been thinking about are so “me” - and funky and all.

Then again, maybe i should be a little more traditional on my wedding day and stop trying to be different.

I loved my dress, but when I tried it on at my first fitting, I was swimming in it and it looked horrible. They had to take it in from every which angle and I was resigned to the fact that I would look like sh*t on my wedding day. After my second fitting, it looked great. They really did wonders to the dress. Don’t second guess yourself. See how you feel at your next fitting. You never know - once you get a veil, and have your hair and makeup done, you might be able to really transform your look in to something you do love.

may I ask you which dress you got from the Gown Company? Are you happy with them so far. Since I order an custom made dress from there about 3 months ago. I am worried!

Josie, the dress is actually really great, as is the service from the Gown Company. I am very pleased that I picked them over some of the larger shops in the city, despite my worries about my own changing taste. And like Sara said, maybe I will like it more when it fits a bit better.

If you are having your dress custom made, I wouldn’t worry–that means it will be perfect for you.

Miss Caterpillar found a new dress….. maybe I should follow her lead!

Dear Jenny Lee,

Won’t you send me a perfect style 518?

Love, Miss Grasshopper

I am ONE sample sale away from becoming a 2-dress bride. EEK!!! Man I am lame….I was really focused on getting a V-neck dress, somewhere along the way I lost sight of my vision and ended up with a strapless one instead. So when I picked up my dress my seamstress couldn’t schedule me in till early Aug, and then I managed to get the second time slot in this weekend’s sample sale appointments. I know I really shouldn’t, but I want to go look! Arghhhhhhhhh……. *tears hair out*

Thanks Miss Grasshopper

My trick is to stop looking for dresses anymore after you ordered my dress. After I put my order in, I actually make minor changes to the dress. Since they have not done the muslin yet, So I can make as much changes as I want to the design. I will go there to do a muslin in September. After that, I better stick to my original call
