Expert Advice: Summer Fabrics

July 21st, 2006 @ 11:27 am by Mrs. Bee

I met bridesmaid/ready-to-wear dress designer Kathlin Argiro at a Ladies Who Launch event, and I’ve asked her to help us with expert advice on wedding fashion.

~~~
Hi Weddingbee,
I’m having my wedding next year in July and have my heart set on a burgundy/wine color theme for my wedding. My problem comes with my bridesmaid dresses. We actually have the dress already picked out, but now that the heat has set fulltime in NYC, I’m worried that my girls will be sweating and uncomfortable in their dresses. The color I have chosen is not a typical pastel/cool color tone and they are also satin material. I think I read somewhere that satin is not a “summer” fabric. Is this true? I really want to keep my color, but do you think that I should reconsider my color theme and dress fabric? What fabric is good for the summer? If I do keep my wine color, what other colors will match with it without making it look like Christmas? Your advice is greatly appreciated.
Thank You,
.yooli.
Hi Yooli,
I think that a bride should have exactly what she wants no matter what time of year. This is YOUR day and it should be your vision.
I do no think that you should change your color theme, however you could change the type of fabric to be more seasonal since satin is generally seen as a more wintery fabric. I would suggest a silk dupioni or shantung (they are very similar and people often use the names interchangably). This fabric is light weight and has a wonderful texture, and many bridesmaids designers offer this fabric. In fact, I will be adding it to my collection in the fall in a wide range of colors.
Shades of cream and champagne are a possibility to complement the burgundy and keep it summery. It all depends on the color of your flowers and other details of the wedding.
Hope this helps!
Hi yooli,
In a summer wedding I attended last year, the bridesmaids wore silk shantung dresses and they were beautiful and season appropriate. You can check out the pics here:
In a wedding I was a bridesmaid in a couple weeks ago, we wore red satin dresses in North Carolina in late June… I was a little worried that they might look too Christmasy or seem too hot, but they ended up being beautiful! We held a mix of red, pink, and white flowers which made it much more springy, and looking at the pictures it doesn’t look like Christmas at all!
I was in a july wedding (sil) in Mass last summer and we wore red satin dresses.
They were lovely, but boy did I sweat out in the sun for the late afternoon ceremony. I would definately recommend finding a more breathable fabric if you can, having the wedding indoors with AC, or allowing the girls to wear knee length or tea length dresses so that they have a little more air flow. =)
There is a nice post here (http://stylegraduate.blogspot.com/2006/07/nordstrom-weddings-part-i-bridesmaid.html) about wine colored bridesmaids dresses if you decide to change the dresses.
I agree with the others that satin in July = uncomfortable.
Good luck!
Going along with Mrs. Bee…I ordered my 6 bridesmaids’ dresses from ARIA. They told me they offered a 10% discount if 6 or more dresses are the same style and color. As it turns out, my sister (and matron-of-honor) just found out she’s pregnant so we had to order a maternity style and they still honored the discount! The dresses haven’t come in yet but I’ve seen the style and color in person and I love them!
Thank you so much for the advice. I went the other day to try it on for myself and i fell in love with the dress all over again. Since my wedding is indoors, my girls should be ok. At least that’s the reasoning i have and have been getting from others. Since i still have time i shall look around more. Thank you all for the advice!
P.S. I loOOove weddingbee.com. I’ve been an avid, #1, but “anonymous” fan ever since Day 1. I guess until now that is!
I have to say, for the love of your bridesmaids, PLEEEAAASE use a lightweight fabric. I was in a wine red polyester dress with about five layers in the skirt plus crinoline in a June wedding, and I just about died. Even in the supposedly air-conditioned sanctuary.
