July 21st, 2006 @ 9:36 am by Mrs. Bee

Dear Weddingbees,

Could you please give me suggestions for a domestic honeymoon other than Hawaii in mid-October?

Thanks!

Emily

What about a cruise or trip to Alaska? Or I hear Key West is very nice if you’re looking for something tropical. Good luck!

I got engaged in Turks & Caicos and it was absolutely beautiful & romantic. It’s a short flight from the east coast. Many other Caribbean islands are good options for honeymoon at various price points. if you’re not looking for a beach/resort type honeymoon, i’d recommend Montreal or Vancouver - while not “domestic,” it’s Canada and depending where you’re located, both can offer a lot. ie - certainly a nice drive to montreal from New York and can go outside of Montreal and have even more to see like Quebec City. If Vancouver, you could even combine it with Seattle and Whistler which is beautiful in both summer and winter. Just some ideas, hope that helps!

My in-laws still rave about their vacation to Key West a couple of years ago. They said it was a very romantic place. They enjoyed a visit to Ernest Hemingway’s home as well as other local attractions.

How about Catalina Island?

Mrs. Bee says:

I think Emily has to stay in the US because of her husband’s visa.

Hmmm…. you could do San Franciso, Napa/Sonoma, Monterey, San Diego (can you tell I’m from California?), there are quaint places in new england (vermont, new hampshire, massachusetts, maine) where you could see leaves change - gorgeous time of year!

Amanda says:

Depends on if you want a beachy HM or a mountain/forest HM and what time of the year.

I love any part of Colorado in the Rocky Mountains. Lake Tahoe is also great in Winter or Summer. There are lots of great places in FL- Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Sarasota, Tampa, Destin.

How about Savannah? or the Smoky Mountains? Upstate NY? Chicago? I had a fab time on the Alaska Cruise a few years ago, but probably not the best (most romantic) for a HM (lots of *older* folks).

i’m totally biased…but go to Disney!!!!! ok, i just had to get that out of my system. i love disney. anyway, i’m thinking probably florida really is the other best option aside from hawaii. maybe PR? its still US terrority. =)

Mrs. Bee says:

you need a us passport to go to american territories like pr i think?

9.
Hannah says:

We’re thinking Key West due to my visa situation.

The Ahwahnee in Yosemite is amazing … or, as Mrs. Bee suggested … maybe someplace on the Calif. coast like Big Sur/Carmel/Monterey?

there are some beautiful spas/resorts in Arizona. and i’m not sure the October temperatures, but Santa Fe is a great city with tons to do… (with spas and psychotically wonderful food also.)

Miss Ant says:

Emily, would you be able to visit the Florida Keys? THIS island is up there with any other honeymoon location!

There’s also ski/snowboarding vacations in the Mountains (I love snow sports)! Las Vegas is the entertainment capital of the world (clean as well as dirty).

aaaannndd… there’s always NEW YORK CITY!!! i *love* ny! =o)

No passport needed for Puerto Rico - great option!

Having lived in Alaska in October, I’d advise against it. Weather is all over, and it could be freeeeezing and icy/snowy, and it’s alreay well on its way to getting kind of dark. For the summer, though, I couldn’t recommend it more — it’s SO gorgeous. Pretty covered in snow, too, but it’s not late enough for guaranteed snow for winter fun.

October is a really pretty time in New England for fall foliage, and there are a number of charming bed & breakfasts and resorts, and places for outdoor adventures, too (biking/hiking/fishing), and it’s still warm enough to enjoy that some in October.

i’m from the midwest, and i would prefer going somewhere mountainous… i was recently watching a documentary on travels through oregon and it was GORGEOUS! i’ve heard portland is a great travel destination, and the weather is mild year-round, so you wouldn’t have to worry too much about it being too cold in october.

santa fe, new mexico!

Jessica says:

We’re doing Santa Fe for our honeymoon this October. We will spend 2 nights at a tree house cabin on the Rio Grande just 25 miles south of Taos, and then 4 nights in Santa Fe. I am so psyched about the food and cultural sights. Did I mention the food? I seriously have a list of over 20 restaurants I would like to try. So many restaurants, so little meal times. :)

the montage resort in laguna beach and santa barbara are also very popular celebrity honeymoon destinations.

The montage in Laguna Beach is GORGEOUS~!
So much beautiful art work everywhere…
and Laguna Beach is just so pretty all year round……. If you go there, breakfast buffet at Las Brisas is a must! Omelettes……. yumm…..

You can go to Puerto Rico. It’s considered US territory. Some international students opted to go there for sp

I’d also recommend Hawaii, Key West, LA/San Diego, or Napa Valley.

I agree with Mrs Bee / Comment #5. San Francisco’s weather is nice even in Oct. We have what’s called an “Indian Summer”, in which our summer extends till Sept/Oct. Napa is beautiful too. So is Monterey/Carmel.

I would go to NOLA!!!!!! It is my favorite city in the US. The food is incredible and the people are great. I know it isn’t the same after Katrina but my gf just came back from a visit and says that the charm is still there

Come out to Cally! There are lots of places here in CA i.e. Carmel, Laguna Beach, Santa Barbara and etc. If it was up to me, I say stay a week in SB! I went to UCSB and I love SB… it is a quaint and luxurious (i.e. http://www.bacararesort.com/). If you decide to check out SB and need suggestion, feel free to contact me~ ;)

ok i’ve done extensive research on this topic, and my family works with visas. i don’t want to go into all the legal and convoluted immigration laws, but if it were me, i would err on the side of caution and stay within the 50 states.

my brother’s wife came to the us on an engagement visa. they went on a minimoon to vegas and then to borabora for their honeymoon when her green card came out.

hope this helps! =)

I live in Portland, Oregon- thanks for the compliment :)

I think we’re going to the San Juan Islands in Washington State, then spend a few days in Seattle. It’s beautiful out here & I hate flying so why go some where else?

Key West is probably my favorite place on the planet. Fantasy Fest is scheduled for Oct 20-29, 2006. http://www.fantasyfest.net/ It would definitely be a lively honeymoon. But there’s LOTS to do away from downtown if you aren’t into Fantasy Fest.

Alternately, a town with a German heritage would most likely be celebrating Ocktoberfest during the entire month. Hermann, Missouri, (http://www.hermannmo.com/) is a beautiful place in October with wineries, antiques and lots of bed and breakfasts.

Good luck!

Thank you all for posting your responses!!! You don’t know how bummed I am that we cannot go to Brazil or India or someplace magical and faraway.

So with that said and recognizing that we are going to have to just do w/ ‘America, the beautiful’ - we were thinking about possibly Maine but are concerned about the weather possibly being too cold. We were also considering Sonoma but heard mixed reviews and just that it was really pricey.

Does anyone know anyone who has had a ’spanking’ domestic holiday (other than Hawaii?)

Thanks again and much love to the Queen Bee for posting this on my behalf.

If you’re looking for a more active honeymoon, how about visiting the Grand Canyon? I was thinking of camping there (I think they have some luxurious packages), if my plans for Spain don’t work out.
