Weighty Issues

July 21st, 2006 @ 10:19 am by Mrs. Firefly

Like most brides, I wanted to lose some weight before the wedding. In my case “some” meant 25 pounds or two full sizes from my engagement weight.

While I don’t want to disclose numbers (the horror! the horror!), I can say that I’ve yo-yo-ed my entire adult life and have gone on every diet out there at some point in the past 15 years. I remember the skinny years (ok, months!): freshman year in HS, second semester junior year in college, summer of ‘99, the summer of atkins (aka summer of 2002).

I also remember the fat period where my weight ballooned to never before seen heights while spending nearly a year living in a hotel, eating out 3 times a day, working non-stop and working out rarely (despite the SportsClub LA gym right in my hotel). When Mr. Firefly proposed, I was in a mid-high weight range. A good 15 pounds or one size smaller than my highest, but sadly, 2 sizes bigger than the summer of ‘99 (my body has changed too much from HS and college for me to even aspire to fit into the same clothes).

Try as I might, I couldn’t quite lose the 25 pounds for the wedding, but I did lose 15 pounds and a little more than a size. And you know what, I’m glad I didn’t lose all the weight. Most people commented that I looked “fantastic” at the wedding, a few people added that I looked “thin.” Had I gone down another size, the weight loss would have been the focus! Also, since it’s (obviously) hard for me to maintain a very low weight, I knew I would gain weight post wedding and then people would think that I “let myself go” after getting married.

I’ve been looking in the mirror these past few weeks and I think I’m comfortable with what I see. I’m not skinny — I’ll NEVER be skinny — but I think that I look pretty good. I want to continue working out regularly (which I’ve been doing since sophomore year in college) and eating mostly healthy. And if I have a couple more pounds I decide to shed, more power to me. But I’m happy to stay where I am!

Now the unthinkable …. bathing suit before and afters! The before is from our Caribbean cruise trip this past December. The after is from the honeymoon (more honeymoon pictures coming soon!). Not a dramatic change, but I’m happy with it.

I had noticed that you looked absolutely gorgeous in your wedding photos and very fit. How you look is usually a reflection of how you feel anyway and you must have felt great because you looked it!

Damn, girl. You got some CURVES going on! =o) A bit of envy, here. haha As someone who looks like puberty hardly hit, it took me a long time to accept my body too. Isn’t it a wonderful feeling?! Good for you and you really, truly do look beautiful! =o)

What’s not to love about a girl that posts pictures of herself in a bikini on the internet?

You look totally healthy, happy, and wonderful. I always felt that it was less about the sizes and shapes, and more about routinely exercising and being healthy - especially when, even at my smallest, I was curvier and bigger than some of the tiny tiny girls I used to run against. (And I loved it when I won!) Of course, a year of moving, new jobs, and wedding planning… just sticking with the “routinely exercising” has been tough.

Thanks for sharing your story!

You look great, hun! Like you, I’ll NEVER be thin. I’m taking care of my weight problems now, but I ballooned up to over 300 pounds. I’ve since lost 70 pounds and counting…but I’ve got a long way to go. It’s great that you took charge of your life, and I’m sure you looked STUNNING on your wedding day.

i’ve always like women with meat on them, as oppose to the current bony trend. you look beamingly beautiful! so perfectly proportioned & YUM. Mr. Firely is a lucky man.

22.
Jessica says:

You’re waist looks so small compared to mine and I guess I’m what people deem ‘thin’. I think you have a beautiful hour-glass figure and look healthy and well-toned.

waisze says:

WOW! you look great! thanks for sharing the story, it’s quite inspirational. i’ll remember you when i work out at the gym.. i’ve lost 15 lbs so far and even though i’m not at my desired goal, i’m happy about.

jaycee says:

beautiful! your story is so empowering and inspiring.

25.
Mindy says:

I have been the same way. Isn’t it amazing how just going down 15lbs./1 size makes you feel better. I now wear skirts all of the time, something I would have never done before. Congratulations!

dorky says:

Your story made me feel good about myself. Thank you. And you look absoultely great. i believe curves are very nice on a woman. what man doesnt love, love handles!

Mary says:

You look fabulous!
Great stomach!

28.
Millie says:

You look great! I think many times we obsess over numbers and that really bogs you down. Although I always say that I want to lose 15 lbs., I’ve learned to ignore the numbers and just focus on how my body actually looks, rather than what the scale likes to tell me. Good job!

29.
Lisa P. says:

I agree 100% with Miss Ant… You look good.

Michelle says:

ggggggiiiiiirrrllll…. you look fantastic! you have a real woman’s body! i am jealous cause i want curves like that. ugh, i would kill to look like you do!

31.
joy says:

Your story is so familiar–but if I can lose 15 lbs and look as great as you do, I will be one heckuva happy girl! You look amazing! (and if you feel amazing, that’s the best part)

kanipark says:

wow… you look FANTASTIC!!!

noah says:

gurl you look goooood! real gooood! im glad not all the women think you have to weigh less that 110 pounds to look good. I love women with meat on their bones, you go gurl! Your a real woman with them curves!!
:)

Ophelia says:

You DO look great! Good job!

Angie says:

You look wonderful!
I hope that this doesn’t sound mean, because I really don’t mean it that way:
Since you have a high waist it may make your hips look bigger. I’m the same way. My waist is high, so it’s hard to find jeans that fit on my hips!
I think you look great in both pictures, and being more confident always makes you look GREAT!
Congrats.

J says:

I love your attitude! Who says you have to be skinny to be pretty! I thought you looked so beautiful and glowing at your wedding. You were as pretty as a doll! Curves is a good thing. I wish i had more curves! Sexy and womanly. Keep up the confidence and the great job on taking care of your body :-).

I think you look fabulous! I believe we need more women like you; who love their bodies because they’re healthy. I’m so tired of seeing stick thin girls who still bitch and moan about their weight. KUDOS to you!!! We are all so proud of you.

Rachel says:

seriously, there is a real change, and you are an inspiration to me! i ordered my dress 2 sizes too small and now have to eatlike a bird for 8 weeks to get into it…i know i don;t reallyknow you, but i am proud of you, and you look hot

jcruz says:

You are so lucky! I went a little crazy and ended up gaining 40 pounds by the wedding. Maybe it was the stress, being happy, too many parties leading up to it. I had to get my dress re-sized. I think some people might have thought I was preggers, but unfortunately, just fat.
