i totally recommend lucille from just pretty bridal salon. she’s located in chinatown. not only is she the owner of this salon, but she is the head hair & make-up stylist. she does wonders!

questions for the beehive: how much is enough time for dancing and what is a typical reception timeline? our venue shuts down at 10pm, and with dinner starting around 7:30, i’m afraid we won’t have ample time for dancing (first dance, dinner, toasts, and slideshow all have to happen prior to boogy-ing down) thanks!

Hi m,

Check out this timeline I created for my wedding. It’s a pretty standard order of events.

most weddings are about 5 hours from ceremony to end of reception so you’re definitely working with a tight timeline, but if you intersperse events between courses and dancing, I think you can squeeze everything that’s important in. good luck!

To “m”:

Usually 4 hours, given that most bands are contracted for 4 hours. I know that’s what I’m working with for my reception (cocktail hour over at 8, band plays til 12, dinner probably served at 9-ish).

If you’re concerned for time, one thought might be to have the slideshow not taking up time being narrated, but continually running off to the side, so when dancers want a break, it’s a fun thing to go check out for a while.

You can also request toasts be kept to a minimum, if you want. I was at a wedding where the only people to toast were bride’s father, best man, maid of honor — and none were very long at all. Also, if you ask guests to join the end of the first dance, it gets shortened, and brings people out to start the party.

a - that’s some great advice! we pretty much did everything you suggested at our wedding.

we had a slideshow playing where the guestbook was so guests could go over and look at their leisure (at my brother’s wedding though).

we also had guests join in not only during out first dance, but also during the parent dances. (i danced with my dad then mr. bee and his mom joined in then everyone joined in). So we did about 1 minute of actual dancing alone in the first dance and parent dance.

you’ll prolly want to tell your dj not to allow anyone to make speeches - we had drunk guests trying to do so but we had forewarned our band leader. only our best man and maid of honor gave speeches and they didn’t take up much time at all.

the most important thing is to create a timeline, and stick to it to the tee. that is absolutely key for staying organized and fitting in everything you want to do. i’ve been to plenty of weddings where there was no schedule at all, so i know what a difference they make.

a & mrs. bee, thank you so much for the suggestions and sample timeline. i will definitely use your ideas for the slideshow playing at the guestbook table and having our guests join us part-way through the parent’s dance! also, the only toasts are supposed to be the maid of honor and best man. with that taken care of and no bouquet or garter tosses (nearly everyone is married), we should be able to fit in ample booty-shaking time! :P thanks again for your responses…this is why i love weddingbee so much! :)

Dee, this will sound random, but for my Bat Mitzvah (many and many a year ago, oy vey!), i had escort cards that looked like movie tickets (the “theme” of the affair had been movies) and i think the company we used was C’est Papier (their site is online but very sparse with details).

i would think that if you look to a smaller shop invite place, they may be able to mock up something for you. otherwise you can find a graphic designer; have them make something up just for you (a la the Caterpillers); get “camera ready” artwork from them; and then bring said artwork to a reputable printer and decide on paper color, weight, size, etc.

good luck.
