I Now Present Mr. and Mrs. Bee

July 26th, 2006 @ 1:38 pm by Mrs. Bee

This is an interesting article about why a man decided to take his wife’s last name when they married.

Beginning around the 1960s, more women were choosing to keep their maiden names or hyphenate their names after marriage.

The number of women choosing to retain their maiden name dipped in the mid-1990s. TheKnot.com reported in 2004 that 81 percent of women planned to assume the last names of their husbands.

I still haven’t changed my last name due to sheer laziness, but I do plan on doing it… some day… soon. :)

Are you changing your last name after you get married?

Actually Mr. Rose and I are choosing a new last name apart from either of our original last names.

We both hate his last name, but I took it anyway when we married, to make things easier. So as a celebration of going into a new phase in our lives, we are legally changing our name to something we both like — it’s actually his middle name :)

My parents were married in the Soviet Union. My dad had a Jewish last name and my mother had an armenian last name. Armenian wasn’t perfect, but it could open a lot more doors then the jewish one (for example, there were certain jobs, etc that you wouldn’t get if you were obviously jewish).

My father took my mother’s lastname and I’ve been trying to convince Mr. Firefly to take it as well … sadly, its not working!

i never heard of combining last names to a new one…

i heard that statistically hyphenating last name divorce rates are higher than those of women that take the husbands last names…

I voted for “hyphenate” but that is a lie! I’m doing what my mom did - just adding his name onto the end so I’ll have four names total. So it will be like Hilary Rodham Clinton; most of the time I’ll write both of our last names but for simplicity’s sake I’ll sometimes just go by Mrs. Hisname. And I don’t have to give up my middle name which is actually my mom’s maiden name.

I’m taking his last name, not so much because I love it, but because I like the traditionality of it! And also the fact that every time I say my first and last names togther I end up sounding mentally retarded. Seriously, not joking here.

what about those that make their maiden their middle? (i’m not but another option to add….but that’s technically taking his, so nevermind)

And combining is definitely a new one for me…probably a spinoff from the bangelina and bennifer trend!!

My fiance and I joked with people that instead of me taking his last name I would take his first name and keep my maiden name.

But really, I am taking his last name. I have a difficult to pronouce first name and last name and he has a very simple and easy last name, so I look forward to having one name people can say on sight!

I’m taking his last name and will probably move my maiden name to my middle. Everyone wants me to hyphenate my name, including my fiance. While it would be a novelty, I’m not interested in novelty factor when it comes to what I’ll be called for the rest of my life. For those interested, if hyphenated my last name would be Gruver-Hoover.

Jessica, I can see the novelty in that, but YIKES. My two names (First and last) are both colors, so if I married someone with the last name Green, or Silver, it’d be tons of fun. :)

Gruver-Hoover! Ha ha. I’m sorry =(

I am planning to do the same: move my maiden name to middle and take his last name. He hates the idea of hyphenating. I don’t have a middle name now, so I get a new name and everyone wins.

We joke around about combining the last name… from Kim and Greenberg to Kimberg. It has a nice ring to it - don’t you think. Too bad it got vetoed by the to be hubs.

I’m planning on taking my fiance’s last name and dropping my own like it’s a hot potato. Honestly, I hate my last name–it’s one of those ones that everyone THINKS is easy to pronounce, yet 95% of them pronounce it wrong. I’ve been waiting since I was a little kid to be able to change my name, and even though my fiance’s last name is offbeat, I still prefer it to m own.

However, I’m the only person who can carry on this last name (my brother died last year, and none of my cousins carry my last name), so I feel sort of bad about abandoning it. I think what we’re actually going to do is give my maiden name to one of our kids as a middle name–it sort of has a “middle name” sound to it.

i have a friend who changed hers because she wanted her initials to be ASK.

as for me, i’ll probably keep my name. i like the way my whole name sounds and he really doesn’t care. however, things might change when we have children. basically, i’ll probably stick with whatever is easiest.

as for the “if you don’t change your name, you’ll end up getting divorced study,” it also said you were more likely to stay married if you become a housewife. i don’t think that’s going to make us all quit our jobs. and the articles i read disputed the methodology.

My last name is Schwimmer. My fiance’s first name is David. We joke that if he changed his last name to mine, he would become “David Schwimmer.”

I am having a seriously hard time deciding if I want to change my last name. I feel like it is so much a part of my identity. It has been my name for 29 years…and besides, I will miss being asked if I am related to David Schwimmer :)

i’m definitely changing my last name to his. infact, i’m looking forward to it! to me, it makes it so final, as if we’re both committing ourselves fully to the marriage. and i think i’ll feel different, in a good way, when i take his last name. oh and did you know that in korea, the girls don’t change their last name even after they get married? i didn’t know that! they still keep their last name. i’m glad it’s not like that here. i just really appreciate the whole changing the last name process.

I’m keeping my last name because I like it alot. My fiance also insists that I keep it because it’s not very common and says there are already too many Jane Kims in the world.

i’ve tried to convince aaron to take my last name, just because after we marry, it will be the end of my family’s name. my dad produced all girls, therefore the family name stops when we marry and take our husband’s last name. aaron’s not too keen on the idea. it was worth a shot though. :o)

I couldn’t wait to get rid of my maiden name. “Kim” is such a common last name for Koreans, so it was easy for me to drop it. My husband has a very rare Korean last name. On paper, people just assume that my husband is caucasian!

I’m taking my husband’s last name “Son” and I love it! It makes for so many childrens’ names jokes… i.e. Our first son… First name Michael, middle name Jack. Second son, Jack John. Daughter Pamela Ander. etc…
