Why We Pick Our Bridesmaids

July 28th, 2006 @ 8:30 am by Mrs. Grasshopper

People pick their bridesmaids for various reasons: you’ve been friends forever; she’s (or he’s) your best friend; she’s your sister; she supports you- the list goes on. I have a little from each group: I have my sister, my best friend since forever, the friend from grade school, my college roommates and a friend from post college.

When people hear I have six bridesmaids they tend to laugh or say “wow!” and I think “Um… excuse me?” One guy from work said to me when he heard I had six bridesmaids, “WHAT?! You’re not 22 anymore!” Ha. I told him I was still extremely popular at the elderly age of 27.

Ya, it may seem like a lot of bridesmaids to some, but I have heard of people having more, like WAY more, and for me, these were the girls I wanted close to me the day of the wedding.

Last week in the midst of writing some thank you notes, Mr. Grasshopper came in with the mail; in it was a check from one of my bridesmaids for her dress. Here is the note that she sent with it:

I opened this letter and could not stop laughing and I thought THIS is why I picked Maggie to be in the wedding, because I need her humor on the big day to help keep me laughing all the way to the ceremony when my instinct is to freak out about my hair starting to frizz.

hahahaha, AWWWW!!! That is so freakin’ cute! I think it’s wonderful you have 6 bridesmaids! Hopefully I’ll still be as popular as you are by the time I get married :)

“WHAT?! You’re not 22 anymore!”

What kind of comment is that?
Since when is number of bridesmaids determined by the bride’s age?

That’s a cool letter. I too am going to have 6 bridesmaids. At first I thought that maybe it was too many since it’s not going to be a really huge wedding or in the evening but then I was thinking, “you know what, it’s my wedding. I can do what I want. I can’t not have any of the 6 girls stand up there with me.” more power to you!

I’m having 6 bridesmaids too. Believe it or not that is a conservative # in my family… my cousin had THIRTEEN!!

What’s wrong with 6? And I agree with a commentor above, what does age have to do with the number of bridesmaids you have??

The last wedding I was in, there were 8 bridesmaids. The bride had asked 10 girls, but 2 couldn’t make it. I think it’s wonderful having so many of your close friends up there supporting the couple!

Funny thing - I got a card from one of my bridesmaids last night too. She said how happy she was to be in the wedding and to call her if I needed help with my crazy sister and nutty Mom because “that’s my job”. Love her! Glad you have such good friends too.

That is hilarious! That is a great friend. :) Sound very similar to what my bm would have said. We’re all a bunch of crazys. I have 4 bm and I thought that was a tad excessive…but I guess I was wrong.

Haha, that’s great! I say, have as many BMs as you WANT! I’m having 3 and my MOH. A friend I’ve been through everything with, a college friend, one of my cousins, and another friend who’s stuck by me through everything.

I think it’s so great that you get to have 6 BM! If I could I would…but my “other half” is very firm about taking on all the bridesmaid and groomsmen’s expenses…so we’re cutting it down to 2 bridesmaids and 2 groomsmen…so that we can pay for their attire expenses etc…

“to each their own” i told someone i’m having 4 and they said “that’s it?” i think she had like 8 or something.. we all have our own reasons for the number we pick, so who cares?

I’m having 7, but the Maid of Honor is walking her daughter (my flower girl, who will only be about 1 1/2 at the time) down the aisle in a wagon. I thought this was alot until I went to a wedding last weekend where there were 8 bridesmaids, 2 junior bridesmaids, and four flower girls. It was like she didn;t want to leave ANYBODY out.

that letter is hilarious! i think there’s nothing atypical about having 6 bridesmaids. it seems like a fairly average number nowadays but who cares what’s average and what’s not. you can do whatever you want!!! =D

Wow, it’s so great to hear that so many other people are going to have 6 bridesmaids! I was worried it was too many… so many people are acting that way. I figure it this way though: my sister, fiance’s sister, 2 best friends/roommates from college, one from kindergarten on, and one from high school. My cousin just had 7 and I know I saw a picture in a magazine or online with 10… so that made me feel a little bit better. :)

Question to anyone having 5 or 6 (or more!) BMs… are you planning to have them all sit at the head table, or make other arrangements, like separate tables for all the girls and all the guys?

6 is great! I too am having 6 bridesmaids. I figured that there is no point in picking and choosing…I’d rather have ALL than just some. It’s your special day…and why not have ALL your lovely ladies celebrate with you!!!
But, yes I agree that some people will smirk or whatever when you tell them. so far i’ve had 3 people do that…whatever!!!
