Open Question: Seamstress

August 2nd, 2006 @ 12:15 pm by Mrs. Bee

I need help finding a good seamstress. I bought my dress at a sample sale, and took it to a bridal shop in brooklyn to have altered. They did some things right (hem, repaired beading), but the way she bustled it looks terrible and it still doesn’t fit right (too tight in bodice, too loose in the chest). She didn’t have any other ideas for the bustle and she thought it was ok that I couldn’t breathe. Rather than fight with her about it, I’d like to take it to someone else to take care of these final details. I already spent $240 on the alterations, so I’m hoping to find someone reasonable. I’ve tried calling Ann Hamilton, who was recommended on The Knot, but she’s not getting back to me. My wedding is in 6 weeks, so I’m running out of time.

I had a bridesmaid dress tailored at Silhouettes and Profiles and found them very professional - http://www.silhouettesandprofiles.com/. My alterations cost around $40.

I’ve also had another bridesmaid dress tailored at Peppino tailors, right near Bloomingdales. Apparently that’s where Macy’s sends all their apparel to be altered. It was super inexpensive (less than $20) and I had a similar situation. I had the bridal shop tailor the dress first and they did a terrible job (I looked pregnant but I wasn’t!), but Peppino made it look beautiful. I think this is the info: Peppino Tailors, 780 Lex [60th/61st] 212.832.3844. More info is at http://www.manhattanusersguide.com/archives_content.php?contentID=110603&category=services.

Good luck!

If you’re in a super crunch, you can try Mark Ingram Bridal Atelier. They do alterations on non-house dresses. But, be forwarned, they will cost you a fortune.
