The Unforgettable Wedding

August 2nd, 2006 @ 2:19 pm by Mrs. Bee

Brides and grooms may never forget their wedding day, but their guests probably will.

After enough chicken dances, lukewarm buffets and centerpieces that look the same, weddings can start to blend together.

The article Unforgettable I Do’s Can Happen With the Right Theme talks about couples that scoffed at cookie cutter, and selected a theme that was memorable, meaningful, and fun.

  • Kelly Tippet had a Roaring 20’s/Great Gatsby themed wedding and learned how to dance the Charleston.
  • Crystal Nangle married on Sept 10, 2005 - the day before her 9/11 birthday - and had a red, white, and blue themed wedding.
  • Sarah Yurga and her husband Rob are “Blockbuster junkies” and had an Oscar themed reception complete with red carpet, 8 foot tall Oscar statue, ticket stub seating cards, and tables named after their favorite movies.

Are you doing anything to make your wedding unforgettable?

I wouldn’t have it any other way! For starters, we’re having a dessert buffet instead of a dinner buffet–we’re noting on our invitations that a reception of dessert, drinks, and dancing will follow, but not telling guest just how much dessert they’ll have available–we’ve arranged for not one but TWO chocolate fountains, both a wedding cake and SOLID FUDGE groom’s cake, a few ethnic desserts, fresh fruit, a coffee bar, tons of other kinds of cookies, candies, and pastries, and whatever else we can think of. I want guests to walk in the door at the reception, see the lavish spread, and just have a jaw-dropping “WOW” moment.

Beyond that, we’re having a “starry night”/”midsummer night’s dream” theme. It’s not going to be overt and “prom-y”, but more subtle–I love light in any and all forms, so we’re draping twinkle lights around the ballroom (with chiffon netting), having luminaries on all the walkways, floating tealights in the centerpieces (floating tealights in clear glass bowls of those “squished marble” clear glass rocks, sitting on square mirrors and surrounded by star-shaped confetti), chinese lanterns strung among the trees outside, even sparklers for the grand send-off!

We’re planning the wedding on a budget, so since we can’t wow the guests with lobster and a 10-piece band, we’ll attempt to do so with personal, funky touches that hopefully they haven’t seen before.

hmmmm- i think my wedding will be cookie cutter. hahaha. i just want a nice wedding day that goes relatively smoothly. all that matters is that it doesnt look bad, and that my family and friends will remember it.

I think it’ll be a bit “cookie-cutter”, as we are going to be on a limited budget, pretty much…as I want to have an AMAZING honeymoon, rather than spend 60,000 on a wedding or something…I really don’t know. I’m still in the researching phase…

I think some of those themes seem overdone - I hadn’t likened it til a prom until I read the above comment, but I agree. Definately seem a bit “prom” or “theme party.” I always thought that a wedding should be… a wedding. And the theme - while reflecting the tastes of the bride and groom - should be not “oscars” or “under the sea” or even “winter wonderland” but “two people who fell in love and are choosing to spend the rest of their lives together, and want people they love included in this momentous event and celebration.”

I hope what people remember, before anything else, and again after everything else, from my wedding is how absolutely in love my (then) husband and I seemed. Not a ginormous Oscar statue.

Though, all that said, I’d like them to notice that night that everything is beautiful, and delicious, and not entirely just like every wedding they’ve ever been to — with the smaller personal touches, like Katie says.

And I don’t want it all to look completely generic. Bleh.

honestly? heh. i’m getting married in vegas. and despite the location, i am hoping to have a very relaxed fun, casual wedding. like trying to have the most non wedding wedding i can. heh. i don’t know if that’s memorable, but i am determined to make it so. more stress for me, hopefully less stress for my groom, parents and guests.

i’m doing something along the lines of a movie theme…mainly because when people ask me how we met, i tell them to think “sleepless in seattle meets serendipity.” that and a lot of friends have said that we have a “movie love” :-) we’re not going to do too much but my fav idea i came up with so far is to give away a few oscar style awards to guests who give the best speech, travelled the furthest, and is the best dancer…or something like that. but they don’t know that yet. ;-)
