About Mrs. Poppy

Flowers

August 3rd, 2006 @ 11:47 am by Mrs. Poppy

First of all: I want to say that I’m soooooo happy to be part of weddingbee!!! ^^

I’ve been debating whether to hire a florist or hiring… myself as the florist for the longest time. Mr. Poppy and I are on a super tight budget since we’re buying our home and having a wedding in the same year, so it’s a bit of a pinch on the wallet.

After doing hours and hours of research I found many wonderful wholesale flower sites. Many of which sell roses. Then I was thinking - if we get roses, we’ll have to de-thorn them, rip the leaves off and it just seemed like too much work right before the wedding.

I kept going back and forth between florists and wholesale sites. After meeting with a couple florists I knew we couldn’t afford it. After all - I have six, yes six, bridesmaids!

I finally decided that I would use pink mini cally lilies. Nothing to dethorn and cut my fingers (I’m a pianist, if I did - my teacher would literally…. kill me shocked.gif), no leaves to rip off… it’s a beautiful flower by itself and the color of pink goes well with my wedding theme.

According to this site the calla lily is associated with elegance and charm. This flower goes PERFECTLY with my ceremony music which is all french piano music.

I contacted the wholesaler to ask if I could buy a sample of their calla lilies. I’m going to have a practice session with one of my bridesmaids and see how easy/difficult it will be. But really - I’m planning a really simple ribbon around the flowers and that’s it!

Once I get a hold of these flowers - I’ll be sure to post pictures of the process!

What flowers are you ladies using for your bouquet?

i just did a trial with mini pink calla lilies for my maid of honor bouquet, and they turned out so beautifully. my FMIL is great with flowers, and to control the direction of the flowers, she gently massaged the stems to the direction she wanted them to go. she also separated the flowers when bunching them together with a pipe cleaner…meaning one flower, wrapped around the stem with the pipe cleaner, added another flower, wrapped that around with the same pipe cleaner, etc. (that area is wrapped with ribbon so the pipe cleaner work is hidden.) it gave it great spacing without crowding the flowers and made the bouquet much fuller…it took about 11-15 calla lilies for one bouquet. if you’d like pictures, let me know :)

Calla Lilies are fast becoming one of my favorite flowers! My bridal bouquet will consist of black baccara roses, burgundy calla lilies and a few white stephnotis (sp?) just to break up the deep colors. My matron of honor’s bouquet will be just the burgundy calla lilies and the boutinnieres will all just be one or two calla lilies as well. They are such beautiful, simple and elegant flowers!

I’m using lime green cymbidium orchids, red anemones, and Rudbeccia or Pincushion.

My bouquet will have green cymbidium orchids, white dendrobiums, black magic roses and peach roses wrapped in lily grass. I get all excited just thinking about it.

My bouquet was all white roses, and I loved it.

BUT, as I have posted before I was not a huge pan of my florist. I think you ladies can do it yourselves, with a friends help!
Seriously…

My PA did my rehearsal dinner flowers with hot pink roses from growersbox.com and they were awesome! 90% of the roses were lush and gorgeous, and we got them for about a dollar a rose! She wired them, and they looked better than many of my florists’ roses!

Wow Miss Poppy, thanks for the inspiration! Every time I tell ppl I want to do my own flowers they tell me I’m crazy. What will you do about boutonnieres? And will you have any other decorations (for the ceremony, reception, etc.)?

m - thanks for the info! Could you please send me pictures too (rm47of450 at yahoo)? Also, do you know when you’ll put the actual bouquets together? Night before? Morning of? Will you be ordering flowers online going to the Flower District?

hi there r~ i know people tell me i’m crazy too but it’s ok cuz i know i am. :) well since i’m using mini calla lilies, it’s perfect since one on each man will be good. i’m thinking of putting a simple thin ribbon on each of them and then just a pin. i don’t know if that’s too simple but that’s what i have planned anyway. the groom, our parents will have maybe 2-3 calla liles. i’m still debating. once i have my sample set i’ll post pics of my trials. hopefully they’ll turn out nice!!

as for the decorations for the ceremony and reception, it won’t be with the calla lilies i know that for sure. i’ll post about reception decorations soon :) i’m using favours as centerpieces and a round mirror with some tea lights.

oh and i’m going to have mine delivered a couple days earlier since calla lilies take a few days to open their bloom. *sigh* i don’t know :)

One of my dear friends decided to do her own flowers for her wedding, using Costco flowers. It ended up working out well, but only because she appointed three of her cousins to take charge of the project (DIY bouquets, boutonnieres, centerpieces, altarpieces, corsages, you name it, they did it). My friend was too frazzled with other details and getting herself ready that it would’ve been impossible for her to get all the flowers together, even a day or two before the wedding… So make sure you get lots of good helpers to take point on the flowers!

Oh, and we had an all-roses wedding. :) My bouquet was white roses with lavender sweetheart rosebuds interspersed in it, and my bridesmaids carried bouquets of pink, white, and dark purple roses.

i will send you the pictures as well! (just saw your comment). as for when to assemble, we are going to put together the boutonnieres and corsages the night before…FMIL’s trick is to soak cotton balls in water and take pieces from it and wrap the bottom of the boutonnieres, then wrap it all up in floral tape. keeps them hydrated for a while and then we’ll keep them cool in the fridge.

the calla lily bouquet we’ll do the day of…however, i’ve had the sample bouquet in water since we made it last week, and it’s still alive and doing well.

as for where we’re getting the flowers, there are a lot of online sources, but they sell flowers in bulk. i have just one attendant, so we’re buying them through a wholesale floral company in the area (FMIL has wholesale license) and having them ship it to my destination wedding…still comes out cheaper than having a florist do it!!

some online sources:

http://www.freshroses.com
http://www.theflowerexchange.com

hope that helps, and i’ll get the pictures out to you when i get home from work! :)

I am having red and orange dahlias, red roses, orange mini-roses and dark green leaves. The bouts will be red dahlia (for the groom) and orange (for the rest of the guys) with dark red coffee bean sprouts. The corsages will be all mini-roses. My bouquet will be mostly red with a little bit of orange, and the girls will have half and half red and orange. I am looking forward to my fall wedding in one month!

Check with your local supermarket. You’d be surprised how many bridal bouquets they actually do!

I’m doing all sunflowers. They are my favorite flowers of all times and I just cant resist putting them in my wedding. We are actually growing them all (and buying some for backups, just in case!) in our backyard and then I am making the the whole bouquet myself. our wedding colors are orange and green so it fits perfectly!
