Colors and Fabric Galore

August 4th, 2006 @ 1:13 pm by Mrs. Lily

I am an indecisive bride. Especially when it comes to choosing my “colors.” I was invited to NINE weddings this year and am hoping not to replicate what all my friends are doing. This, of course, limits the color options significantly.

My MOH has been amazing (amazing, amazing) and tried on a billion dresses and I *think* I have settled on blue. Ugh, it is so hard to decide. I really liked a Jim Hjelm dress, but the only blue it came in was caribbean blue (brightish turquoise). I liked another dress in ice blue too… but I liked the dress less than the color. Point being, I think I will probably go with the caribbean blue dress, but I may still change my mind.

In an effort to move the decision making process along, I took a trip to the Garment District to buy fabrics in my “color palettes.” My current ideas are either caribbean blue dresses with light blue linens and red accents OR caribbean blue dresses with light blue linens and chartreuse accents. Here is what I came up with:

1) Carribean blue (the little swatch on the red below) with light blue and red

2) Carribean blue with chartreuse

I really don’t care for the print of the flowered chartreuse fabric, but it was cheap, and you get the idea (it may be a bit too green too). I think the trip to the Garment District was great to help me think more about colors, but sadly I am STILL CONFUSED! I want something different, but not ugly. What do y’all think?????

I personally like the carribean blue and chartreuse together. They are analogous colors and would allow for using a tonal pallete. Carribean blue and (orangey) red, on the other hand, are complimentary colors and usually are easy to work with. Kind of like, red and green. So, really you couldn’t go wrong wrong with either combo.

The second one allows more to play with (flowers and favors mostly!)

i think the caribbean blue and red make more of a statement because the blue and chartreuse are so similar. the red could be used for bright accents, whereas the chartreuse could fade instead of highlight.

this month’s martha weddings has a great piece on blues and reds.

i don’t know if you checked into it or not, but jim hjelm dresses can have their fabric swapped. i had the same problem finding a champange color that didn’t wash the girls out. check on jim hjelm’s website for the fabric color choices. i switched mine from taffeta to satin-faced taffeta. the dress is now satin since the perfect color was the satin side. they even sent large sample swatches before i decided to make the switch. it did cost a few dollars more per dress to switch, but i think it was well worth it! good luck.

I just saw a beautiful spread of turquoise/caribbean blue and red. It was stunning! It was the last issue of Martha Stewart Weddings.

I am using chartreuse as one of my wedding colors, so I am partial to that color myself. We’re pairing it with chcolate brown and ivory for a fall wedding. I’ve never seen it used with bright blue, but if you like it, go for it! Picking the colors was probably my favorite part. I love the details stuff — the paper, fabrics, etc.

i am doing turquoise and chocolate!! not aqua, not tiffany’s blue but a darker peacock-ish turquouse. they only thing is it will be good to have a green, chartreuse accent, i have had to add one because otherwise it is hard to find flowers, etc.

the red/blue in martha stewart was more of a light blue and red, it looks really good together and really new, not done before.

Thank you guys for all of your comments! I am so perplexed over these silly colors and need to just make up my mind. I like the red because it’s a little different (even though it is in Martha…), but it could potentially be harder to work with than the chartreuse (I don’t want a 4th of July theme!). I keep hoping the right answer will just appear to me, but so far no luck!

Oooh, my colors are sort of close to your top choice, but I’m also having to reconsider a little because of the Jim Hjelm fabric choices!!! My original concept was sort of a dusty cornflower blue, but the dress my MOH & I liked best on her (she’s the only bridesmaid) is in shantung that only comes in a seagreen shade of blue…I’m thinking I might just have her wear a neutral brown and carry cornflower blue flowers instead though? And then red accents! So I am totally partial to the top color combo. :-) But I also love the 2nd one!!! I wouldn’t be tied to red except that’s our little nod to my fiance being Chinese so I really can’t cut that out myself!

I think the blue and red will best fit with your desert wedding, the blue and green says more tropical to me.

They recently did an article in Martha Stewart wedding similar to these colors and it looked really nice. I believe it was the July issue.

Laura– was it the tahitian blue that the dress you liked came in? That was pretty too. You can’t go wrong with brown though– it looks good on everyone (just not so much in the desert).

As for KEB, I too worry that the blue and chartreuse is a bit tropical, although in the spring the cacti and plants can look kind of bright so… I just don’t know!!!

You’re not the only one who frets over colors. It took me FOREVER to decide. I also have had a ton of weddings, and wanted something different, fun, but still gorgeous.

I ended up with a whole mix of colors - bridesmaids each in a different one, and the flowers are a mix of all of them. Not blues, though… so I won’t tell if you don’t want more ideas thrown in the mix.

But I’d say don’t be afraid to think of the bridesmaid dress less as having to be ONE color, and more as an option to mix it up a bit — definatly not something that’s seen all the time, which might give that variance from the 9 other weddings. I imagine each in a different color or mix of the blue/chartreuse colors (prob chartreuse accents, not sure about a full dress that color!)

Instyle Weddings Fall 05 and Summer 06 both have features on BM dresses in different shades and tone of specific color themes, so I’d say definitely mix it up. They photograph beautifully! The red and aqua palette in MS Weddings is gorgeous, but can start feeling like 4th of July if left to run wild IMO. Another good place to get palette insipiration is at Home Depot or a paint store. Tons of swatches and paint chips!
