About Mrs. Orchid

Dancing Queen

August 7th, 2006 @ 4:57 pm by Mrs. Orchid

This weekend I went to a girlfriend’s wedding. I’ve known her since we were in the 6th grade, and it was wonderful to be there for her wedding. Their first dance song was At Last by Ella Fitzgerald, and I could tell they took some dance classes judging by their fancy footwork. It was beautiful, very romantic and dreamy. I’m such a sap. blush2.gif

Seeing their first dance made me think of what song I would like for my first dance, and what songs I want to use for the bouquet and garter toss. Here are some of the contenders:

First Dance:

  • Amazed - Lonestar (this is actually our song, because it was playing in the background when we shared our first kiss)
  • Someone Like You - Van Morrison
  • These are the Moments - Edwin McCain
  • That’s All - Nat King Cole
  • Breathe - Faith Hill
  • Forever and for Always - Shania Twain
  • I Wanna Grow Old with You - Adam Sandler

Bouquet Toss:

  • I’m Gonna Getcha - Shania Twain
  • One way or Another - Blondie

Garter Removal/Toss:

  • Wild Thing -Tone Loc
  • Pour Some Sugar On Me - Def Leppard
  • Cherry Pie - Warrant

At this moment my favorites are:

  • Bouquet Toss: I’m Gonna Getcha - Shania Twain
  • Garter Toss: Wild Thing - Tone Loc

and…

  • First Dance: I Wanna Grow Old With You -Adam Sandler

I just love the lyrics of this song. It’s so sweet & simple. The song is short (under 2 minutes) so I was thinking of using it as the intro to our first dance song, where this one will fade out and we will dance to another song - perhaps That’s All by Nat King Cole. I’ll post links for lyrics to both songs below.

I Wanna Grow Old with You - Adam Sandler
That’s All - Nat King Cole

What do you think of the idea of using this song for a first dance? What songs are you considering choosing for your reception?

i LOVE “i wanna grow old with you”
we put that song in our cd favor :)

i think you should go with one song for your first dance… the length of “i wanna…” is perfect… not too long, not too short :)

i went to a wedding where their friends played & sang the song for them… it was so romantic :)

I LOVE THAT SONG!!!
Definately not your “typical” first dance song! :)

I love that song, as well. :) And I agree with kanipark about the length of the song — we danced to Allison Krauss’s “When You Say Nothing At All,” which we both really love, and while I don’t regret the song choice, I do kind of wish we’d picked a shorter song — I felt a little self-conscious after just a minute or two of plain old slow-dancing… Just something to think about!

i love “i wanna grow old with you!” we were going to play that sometime at the reception. our first dance is “crazy love” by van morrison. i love that song. it is short and it is a chill song. i dont want something that is totally romantic because that’s not how we are as a couple.

i was considering the adam sandler song for my first dance, but my FI doesn’t really know the song (he’s never seen the wedding singer). in the end i decided “no matter what” by george lamond. this song is perfect b/c we are both freestyle fans and it’s not a typical first dance song.

We chose Erasure’s Always for our first dance, a bit unusual, but it’s a song that fits us. We love alternative music. The hard part is dancing to it. We’re taking dancing lessons, and I can tell the instructor is sort of non-plussed with the music.

I also love the “wanna grow old with you” song - we’re using it for cake cutting. It’s so sweet.

It’s a great song and we’re definitely playing it too.
We’re using Moon River for ours..

Our first dance will be “You are so Beautiful” by Joe Cocker. Throughout our relationship we’d randomly sing this to eachother and start slow dancing. It was an easy decision.

That’s our first dance song too! I love it cause we’re not too serious and Matt always gets tummy aches :-) I think we’re going to use the version from the musical though (the cd came out not too long ago), simply because Adam Sandler’s voice is so distinct, and I want people to go “Where do I know that song from?”

My friends who recently got married, had 2 of their close friends play the guitar and sing that song (I wanna grow old with you) during ther ceremony! They had tweaked some of the lyrics to reflect real aspects of the couple’s lives, and it was so sweet, yet light-hearted and fun! I loved it!
