Adorning the Bride

August 8th, 2006 @ 9:02 am by Mrs. Bluebell

Speaking of family tradition… when my grandfather passed away last year, my mom and her sisters found these in my grandparents’ safe deposit box:

weddingnecklacepinli5.jpg

They belonged to my great-great grandmother and are both from the 1870s or 1880s. The pin was actually a gift to her from my great-great grandfather on their wedding day (and is inscribed with their initials and wedding date in 1878). We’re not sure when she received the necklace.

I’m definitely wearing the necklace, and if I can come up with a use for the pin, I might wear it (in my hair?) or have my mom wear it. In any case, I can’t imagine a more perfect “something borrowed!” :)

Here’s a picture of it on my neck:

weddingnecklaceneckshotnk7.jpg

And while I can’t post a picture of my wedding dress (ordered fifteen months before the wedding) for fear of Mr. Bluebell seeing it… I might as well give you a shoe teaser!

I saw these gold flip flops with gold sequins on the straps at Ann Taylor Loft that I’m not totally committed to yet. :) I know they sound kind of crazy, but they look like elegant sandals, and I am sooo not interested in hurting my feet or sinking in the mud on my wedding day, so I’m pretty set on it. (Plus I wear flip flops every single day that I can.) They go well enough with my dress, and I think my gold necklace will balance the flip flops out a bit, but mainly - my dress is long so I don’t expect anyone to see too much of them.

Do any of you have heirloom jewelry (or veils or dresses or anything else) you’re going to wear in your wedding?

now that you mention it. i have a necklace and bracelet my grandmother left me when she passed away. i’m starting to think i could wear that with my dress… since my bridesmaids will be wearing wine… it might actually match quite well. hmm. thanks for the idea! heh.

hahaha, if only I’d known Mrs Bee! That picture is actually a couple months old and just a bedsheet. but it does make a pretty background. :-)

and thanks everyone!

snot - what’s your necklace like? I love the idea of wearing old family jewelry in a wedding! (hehe, obviously)

Ooh, thanks for that idea Miss Poppy! I have seen other people do that so I don’t know why it never occurred to me! :)

I think I’m still leaning towards the hair idea…but do you think a pin of that sort would stay in hair??

Gorgeous jewelry! I love the story behind that pin, especially–what a fantastic heirloom!

Most of my ancestors were poor Kentucky farmers (not that there’s anything wrong with that) so we don’t have a lot of heirloom jewelry. In fact, I think it’ll be a stretch to come up with my “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.” ::shrugs:: oh well.

hey miss bluebell!
it shouldn’t be difficult to put it in your hair. just secure it with bobby pins and you’re good to go :)

That’s a great necklace, and definately not something that I’ve seen around a lot! And I like the earrings you’re wearing in the shot, too. ;)

I think the pin would definately look great in your hair!!!

GREAT something old! :)

i feel bad! i forgot to compliment how beautiful your necaklace is! i love that it’s a vintage necklace and it looks so nice on you :)

my grandma’s necklace is pretty plain actually. it’s yellow gold with two rows of ruby and diamonds with a matching bracelet also with the little rubies and diamonds. but i like the simplicity of it because it won’t obviously clash heh with everything else i am wearing.

but… there’s a huge backstory to why i am so glad you made me think to wear it… but it’s not the happiest story. so let’s just say - i had been trying to think of some way to include something significant from my grandma as part of my outfit and i think she would be thrilled if i wore that necklace since i can’t wear what she originally would have intended for me.

Thanks everyone! :-) Haha and for the neck compliment Miss Spider!

Snot (how’d you come up with that name anyway??) - your grandma’s necklace sounds beautiful! And I’ve got to say I am sooo intriiiigued by your story, but I won’t pry! :-) In any case, that sounds like a very nice idea and I’m sure the necklace & bracelet will be perfect for you!

Miss Poppy - bobbypins! Of course! You are all about pointing things out today that seem so obvious after you say them! :-)

Miss Bluebell, I think it just looks amazing, and I think I’d want it on my bouquet, but that’s only because I’m doing a “wrapped one, and I’d probably pin in vertically up the bouquet- a little sparkle from the flowers! The gold is just such a rich color, and sets off your hair color nicely.

I also think they are gorgeous and looks great on you. I’m very sentimental too so I’m so glad you found those. You could definitely use that pin in your hair or if you have a sash for your dress you can pin it on the sash. Whatever you go with, I’m sure it’ll be beautiful.

My dress just arrived. It’s the closest thing I’ve got to a family heirloom. It’s my God mother’s dress, she wore it 54 years ago at her wedding (she was happily married for almost 50 years before her husband past away f/Lou Gehrig’s disease) and two of her daughters, that are still happily married, altered it and wore it at their weddings. At first, I was hesitant to use it, it seemed kind of worn and reminded me of those horror movies where there’s always a monster bride, but my father took some pics that turned out pretty well :) I’m still not sure if I want to use it, but it would mean a lot to my mother and god mother if I did, so i’ve got to get to work on fixing it up ;)
