Ceremony Music

August 8th, 2006 @ 3:03 pm by Mrs. Poppy

My most favourite part of the wedding is not: dress shopping, flower hunting, favour shopping… it’s the ceremony music!

I could not wait to figure out what we will have at our wedding. First I wanted to decide on the instrument(s) because I’ve played in a lot of weddings (cello in a quartet), and I knew I wanted something a little different. I finally decided that we would have just one instrument: the piano.

I asked one of my bridesmaids (Veronica) to play the piano during the ceremony. She agreed and said it was such an honour. She is by far one of the best pianists I have ever laid my classical ears on.

I finally came up with a theme: French music. I love the colours and the feel of French music, so our wedding will be filled with music by Debussy. If you want to hear what I’ll be walking down the aisle to, click here and listen to Claire de Lune. Yes, I’m playing it :) but I’m sure Veronica will play it much better than me!

And at the end when they say: “You may kiss the bride”; I will have Till There Was You playing on the piano while we walk out! (Which will be our first dance during the reception.)

My mother is so excited about my music selection. She was telling me that since I was really little, music has always been a part of me. If I wasn’t singing or sitting at the piano, playing cello… I would be sad. She said that this is my time to really let my soul out with the music I pick for the wedding.

I love my mom. She’s so right.

What have you girls decided on with your ceremony music? Will it be traditional or will you do something completely different?

I’m very non-traditional, so I’m sure I’ll end up with a lot of different types of music to play during the ceremony…(and during the reception, too…hehe). I’m not exactly sure yet, though.

I absolutely LOVE the cello!

We’re both non-traditional, so I really want “God Only Knows” by the Beach Boys to play as we leave the ceremony. Sounds lame, but we just love that song!

Music is a giant part of our lives. My fiance is a drummer, and can also play sax, piano, and guitar. I took piano and voice as a kid, was in choir, and am have always been a big music fan. Our friend, and fiance’s bandmate is going to sing and play acoustic guitar for our ceremony. Our song choices are fairly non-traditional, but express our personalities and taste very well. We’re using Silver & Gold by Neil Young, Calico Skies by Paul McCartney, and Grow Old With Me by John Lennon.

You played the Claire de Lune song? It’s so beautiful! You’re a great piano player. I played the piano too for 6 yrs when I was little, but now I’m not good @ it anymore since it’s been so long. I don’t know about my ceremony music yet, but my best friend is going to sing for me. I’m excited!

lynn - i’m having my pianist use sheet music and it says it’s by “meredith wilson” but when we have it as our first dance, we’re going to have the one where the beatles are singing it. :)

Ooooh So pretty~!

I’m going with the ultra traditional stuff… because I’ve always pictured it that way~

But I wish I wish… we could have a jazz band play it instead~

Miss Poppy,

You are truly a fine pianist. Claire de Lune is my favorite piece, and I will also be playing it at my wedding. For some reason, whenever I play this song, I feel like I’m in heaven. May you also feel this way as you walk down the aisle and celebrate an everlasting union with the one who loves you best :) Excellent choices in ceremony music!

i love how we have a good mix between traditional ceremony music (bridal march… etc) and playing music you’d like to play :)

thank you truly to everyone who complimented my piano playing. piano is a huge part of my life as it is not only my major but my job, my passion and really one of the things that make me feel whole.

krizia, it is for that exact reason that i having that song the one that i walk out to. the song itself is so pure, so innocent - so easy on the ears. so beautiful - i can see a beautiful painting like a monet when playing/hearing this wonderful piece of music.

this song represents my love for my fiance and can’t wait till the day when i walk down the aisle and he sees me there with this song!

oh my goodness, you play so beautifully!!!!!

i love the cello. i played it for 8 years, then sadly i quit when i got to college. i was never good enough to be pro anyway. the last piece i was working on was the saint-saens cello concerto. i miss it SO much. so when my family and bridal party walks down the aisle, i am having the cellist play the bach cello suite #1.

you should do a blog on your favorite classical pieces to use at a wedding! i know that a lot of people have trouble figuring out what ceremony music to use, especially if they want a quartet to play.

i’m a music girl myself (a music teacher) and i wanted classical music featuring both sax and clarinet since fi is a sax player, but i cant find anything that i really love. so instead, i am walking down the aisle to “Starflur” by Sigur Ros. They are an Icelandic band, but their music is so moving and emotional with the strings. We are taking our first walk to “My Girl” because I couldnt resist. My other choice was “Beautiful Day” by U2. I just wanted something unique and fun!

Miss Poppy, you make me want to take out my piano and start practicing again!

I’m now in college and have not had much time for piano nowadays..

You inspired me. =)
