About Mrs. Violet

The Dress

August 8th, 2006 @ 1:19 pm by Mrs. Violet

Finding the perfect venue was the best decision we made as an engaged couple. Finding the perfect dress and ordering it was my best decision as a bride to be. I purchased my dress 15 months in advance (I’m sure some of you can relate to me) and without any buyer’s remorse. I also did not pay the retail price. Double yay!

I originally posted my dress in my personal blog. Many weekends ago, Mr. Violet and I returned home from some errands, and the first thing I did was scroll through my entries. Stupid me, Mr. Violet was standing right behind me when I accidentally scrolled past my dress! Yikes! (A huge pit immediately settled in my stomach - I swear I did not breathe for 5 seconds!)

He swore that he only saw white so I tried to let it go and forget that I made such a stupid mistake. 5 minutes later I had a plan. I made Mr. Violet sit down in front of the computer screen and I bombarded him with 40 or so wedding gowns from the knot.com. Call me crazy, but I figured that it was the only way to make sure he forgot what he saw earlier. He thought I was nuts, by the way, but that’s okay, we all know that already. :)

Mr. Violet already knows the color is champagne because I want his vest or bow/tie to match. I totally LOVE this dress so much! The only issue I have is that it looks great on the model because she’s tall, and I’m not sure if my height (5′1″) will matter with the design of the bottom of the dress. I couldn’t really tell when I tried it on, but it looked perfect on me when I stood on the platform. I guess heels will do the trick (comfortable ones, I hope!)

Some of you may have shown your dress to your fiance and I think it’s totally cool. It was actually very hard, and still is tough for me not to go into some of the details with my mate because we talk about everything. But I really want to see his reaction when he sees me in my dress for the first time on our special day.

Great idea about making him look at other dresses to wash yours out of his mind!

That’s funny that you bombarded him with dresses from theknot to take his mind off what he saw. I’m sure he appreciated that ;-)

Haha, that is a great idea!!

Also: LOVE the dress! Just dripping with elegance!

And completely agree with respect to my feelings of telling Mr. Bluebell about my dress….I reeeeeeally want to talk about it and share it with him since I’m so excited, but I want MORE for him to be surprised! Although apparently most of the “don’t you like this dress?” pictures I’ve been showing him post-purchase look a lot alike (WHOOPS) so he says he has a good idea what it’s like now. I hope he’s wrong!!

(And I’m also a 15-month-in-advance dress purchaser! I think that’s EXACTLY the correct number of months! :-) )

I usually do not like the styles from David’s Bridal. BUT that one really is beautiful! I mean it. =o)

Lovely dress! Did you get the dress at one of the DB sales or did you find it elsewhere? I’m interested in a DB dress but not sure where, if anywhere, else I could find it.

Well, I agree with you, Miss Violet, I think in theory it’s a great idea to show him what I am getting, but it’s a whole ‘nother thing to “break tradition”. It’s hard because I want his opinion for every other thing, and THIS, a wedding dress, is a huge thing to not have his input on. I know that at one time I was looking at dresses with sashes, and he told me it didn’t look “bridal” enough. So now I’m torn between getting something I think looks beautiful, and thinking he’ll like it ON me, :) and getting something completely different. Hmph.

Gorgeous! I love the color! I’ve shown him pictures of it just to see what he thinks of it to make sure he doesn’t hate it, but he has no idea that it’s THE dress. I bought my gown two years in advance…I went perusing just to get an idea for dresses, and made the “mistake” of trying it on and that was that!

thanks for all the comments. my advice - DON’T ask your fiance at all what he likes or doesn’t like - because then it’ll just sway your own judgement (which is already hard enough to decide on what kind of dress to get) Just go with your own intuition girls!

felicity - i bought the dress directly from DB. that was the only dress i wanted from there. and it’s very different from the other dresses they had.

LOOOVE the dress! such a coincidence too because i was looking at david’s bridal online just this morning and i loved that dress! i want a dress similar to that because i really like the design on the bottom of the dress. very elegant and different from the traditional gowns. i’m sure your fiance will love it when he sees it on your wedding day!

I recently starting looking at dresses, and it’s important to me that what I pick is something my FI loves. So I plan on picking my favorite 10 (or 30) and having him rank them. :)

I love your dress btw.

katie - i loved it because it was different. it’s not even white! it really goes with my style - original yet still remains that piece of tradition.

you know…i was a short bride too (only 5′1) and looking back, I think I would’ve chosen a dress that also fit my height. we shorties don’t have alot of luxury for these dresses to drape nicely.

So pretty! I have asked my FI’s opinion on some dresses in magazines. Some he agrees with me on (he called one “very Dynasty”), but he has dissed some that I totally heart. So I agree with Miss Violet - you should just go with what you want!

Haha, you are too funny Miss Violet. I would have never thought of the picture trick to confuse your FI. That dress is reeeeally pretty!

L - at the time i wasn’t trying to be funny, i was literally in panic mode! But in retrospect, it was pretty funny. you should have seen my fiance’s face staring at the screen..

I had the same thing happen to me! My fiancee was standing behind me as my super slow computer happened onto a pic of my dress and then took *forever* to close. It felt like slow-motion and I’m sure I turned completely red. I had the same thought–I’ll bombard him with other pics of wedding dresses. But, I figure he sees so many of my bridal magazines around the apartment, that wil happen on its own anyway! So, I didn’t mention it and pray he forgets (which I’m sure he did, like, a half second later).

I love your dress! I also ordered mine way in advance - even more so than you at 19 months before the wedding (it comes in 12 months before). Like you, I fell in love with an alternative color, too. I chose a Maggie Sottero gown in light gold. I can’t wait to see it again. The pictures online are only in white, and my gown is not only light gold, but has details in champagne and pewter and has removable cap sleeves, so it almost doesn’t matter if my fiance sees pictures or not. The dress I ordered looks so different from the pictures online. The addition or subraction of the sleeves alters its appearance dramatically as well.

I’m so glad to see someone else who chose a different color!

Wow, that’s a gorgeous dress!
I think my fiance is going to go with me when I choose my dress, as I’m so self conscious, and he’s the most honest person I know…and he’ll tell me how it is. :)
