Canon in D

August 12th, 2006 @ 1:51 am by Mrs. Bee

Canon in D is one the most popular songs used in wedding ceremonies today. For me, it’s even more evocative of a wedding than the Bridal March (what can I say, I’m a traditional sap :)).

When I heard our musicians start to play Canon in D and our wedding party walked down the aisle, that’s the moment I almost lost it… when it hit me like a ton of bricks and I realized - I’m getting married!

But how rock and roll would it be to use this version at your wedding?

Imagine your wedding party walking down to the slow version, and then you walking down to the rock and roll version. That would be legendary! Of course you could also use it as your recessional… still very cool. ;)

this is the song that chokes me up without fail too! (Bach’s Air on the G String has a similar effect).

this reminds me of that movie the Money Pit (i think) where the orchestra went crazy with Ode to Joy and made it more rock. (unless i am misremembering). fun no less, though!

We had Sunrise Sunset (from Fiddler on the Roof ) for the Rabbi and my grandparents, I think Schubert (but I don’t know what piece!) for the Bridal Party, Its a Small World for the Kids and Canon in D for me. It chokes me up … but I have to say, I don’t like this rock version.

I just want to say OMG!!! We just came back from the rehearsal/rehearsal dinner and all that comes with all day getting ready for the big day. It really has been an Emotional Roller Coaster this whole week and today took the cake. Enough digression. I have loved this music since I saw Ordinary People when I was like 4 or something. Like you girls, this song does me in with tears just streaming down. But even though it makes me cry and cry, I just had to have this for my processional. I never really cared much for traditional Wedding March and our wedding is very casual yet bit traditional so we decided to go with Canon in D. As I waited outside with my father in law to be (he’s walking me down the aisle) chatting away and waiting for our cue, I heard the music. My heart just plunged into my stomach. It really hit me then, this is happening. I still have gazillion butterflies in my stomach. My FI just left with his posse to ’storm the castle’ and I’m in the room by myself to just regroup. I think I deserve my weddingbee fix (been so busy I went without for two whole days) after all the drama. And I see this blog while the song is still playing in my head! Is this a good sign? Fate? Am I just a loon who has completely lost it? Thank you for putting a smile on my face. I am now off to my mom’s room for some pampering by my mom and sisters. My last night as Miss C…

There’s a quasi-defunct band called Thanks to Gravity that did/does a electric violin, drums, and guitar version(”Pachelbel’s Canon”) (I say did/does because former members still perform it). It’s got a brief lyrical interlude in it- but, it’s a very cool arrngement without wailing on the electric guitar quite so hard (the guitar is actually almost classical). You have to pay to dl it legally with the album from the band’s site, but there’s a fan site on myspace that has it if you want to give it a listen (they also do a rocking “ode to Joy”)-http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=47856715
