About Mrs. Spider

Hair

August 12th, 2006 @ 12:59 am by Mrs. Spider

Ten years ago Gary did my hair for my cousin’s wedding. I was sixteen and it was the first time I’d ever had my hair done formally. Gary gave me side swept bangs and curled my hair into a neat bun. I never forgot how lovely I felt that day.

Tonight I had my first trial with Gary for my own wedding. It’s funny how things come around full circle. Gary now has his own store in Chinatown. My mom found him literally by combing the streets and shouting his name from rooftops.

I showed him a few pictures and asked him what he thought. We narrowed it down to a combination between these two styles:

He set my hair in curlers and in the half an hour I sat there waiting, he cut and blew dried 3 other woman. AMAZING. I remember Gary as a chatty fella with an affinity for expensive clothes and gossip. The Gary who styled my hair today oddly looked younger than he did before but was more reserved and mature. Nonetheless, I had a good time reconnecting with him.

Here are some pics from our trial:

When I got home, I stuck this brooch I had in the center of the bun just to see what kind of hair jewelry I could get.

I’m not really sure if I LOVE this hair. Frankly, it makes me look kind of old. I definitely want the bun to be much smaller and my bangs to be softer. I’m actually now considering an even simpler bun like this:

Finally, here are Gary’s prices. I literally gasped out loud when he showed me his price list. LORD, he’s expensive and somewhat unjustly so. I liked him though, he’s trendy, very good looking (haha, so superficial I know) and the epitome of a coooool hairstylist.

  • Bride: $75
  • Bridesmaid: $60
  • Travel Fee and Assistant: $300

Keep in mind, I have SIX bridesmaids and TWO moms on my team. Yeah, don’t bother trying to do the math in your head, you’ll need a calculator.

V Salon does a great job, majority of the time I get my hair cut there. I ask for Cindy she does a better job. By the way love what Gary did to your hair, it’s gorgeous. I think leaving your hair down and dressing it up will look sexy as well.

Yep, a smaller bun. It’s very pretty though.

The prices are reasonable from what I’ve seen. My hairstylist is:
$60.00 per hour — trial run incl. makeup
$300 day of (incl. makeup)
$65.00 hair only - bridal party (incl. moms)
$85.00 hair/makeup - bridal party (incl. moms)

The salons I checked in my area were actually more expensive — if you can believe that!
Two highly respected salon were (including makeup): $350 (bride)and $205 (bridal party, incl. moms) and the other was $350 (bride)and $100 (bridal party, incl. moms). YIKES!! That’s a lot of dough. But, I am having someone come on-site (since it’s a garden wedding) and it does include makeup (can you tell I am trying to justify ~smile~).

I have never had an updo by Jay at V salon, but he has been cutting my hair there for the last 5 years. The haircuts at $20 is so reasonable! I forget her name (she moved to the new salon) threads eyebrows and she is amazing!

i think you can find a much better hairstyle and stylist. I think the 1st picture you listed is the best. I also think your bun would lookbetter towards the name of your beck.

I had that hair style done [your trial] long ago …Needless to say my hair was falling out by the end of the night because my hair was so thick it wouldn’t stay…and I didn’t like it much…it was too big and bothersome…

Suzie at V2 is great with updos, i’ve had her do my hair for a few formal events and she never disappoints and i don’t think it was that expensive either…

Whoa….way too expensive for my taste! Luckily, one of the girls I’m going to have as my BM does hair & makeup, and she said whenever I need her help, just call. :)
