What to Wear to a Wedding?

August 14th, 2006 @ 1:59 pm by Mrs. Butterfly

Whenever I get an invitation for a wedding, I have a slight panic attack because I don’t have anything to wear! So this forces me to go shopping. But I never know quite what to wear to a wedding. Luckily, I found this article in US Weekly. It’s a bit hard to read, so I’ve summarized the most important tips.

Tips for a black tie wedding
Go glam: wear stilettos and jewels; opt for long dresses in dark colors.
Don’t show too much skin: don’t wear outfits with plunging necklines and stay clear of super sheer fabrics.

Tips for a destination wedding
Don’t wear white: try a pastel or subdued tropical shade
Dress comfortably: wear fun, seasonal clothing in lightweight fabrics like linen or cotton, but avoid shorts.
Sexy sandals: rubber flip-flops are too casual, but a jeweled pair will fit the occasion.

Tips for an evening wedding
Keep it short: wear a knee-length black dress; long dresses are too formal.
Add sparkle: after sunset add a piece of bold bling like a cocktail ring or embellished clutch.

Tips for a daytime wedding
Classic is key: think traditional, Audrey Hepburn - a knee-length dress (no bold prints) with pearls; avoid sparkle in the daytime - it looks cheap!

Hopefully this helps, and next time I have to go to a wedding, I’ll know exactly what to wear!

I’m inclined to disagree with the classic Audrey Hepburn style for daytime weddings. I think pretty sundresses are lovely for a daytime wedding!

Can I add one? Tips for a southern wedding: These are often not as fancy dress-wise as a NYC type affair. This isn’t always the case, but often women are in more tea-length and sundress type ensembles. I learned this the hard way (well, I actually ran out and bought a dress day-of once I realized my goof!), so ask in advance!
