Open Question: Hair Stylist/Guest

August 15th, 2006 @ 12:41 pm by Mrs. Bee

Hello,

I have a question: I have a hair stylist who is a family friend. In fact, she does all of the hair in the family, and now my fiance’s! I really want her to do the hair for my wedding, but she usually works on Saturdays. I was planning on inviting her, but because it’s a morning ceremony (10am), she’d have to be there to do my hair and then attend the ceremony and wedding.

Is it rude to have her do my hair as well as be a guest? Should I also invite her mother and sister who work with her and know I’m getting married, even though we’re not as close? They would have to close the shop that day because there are no other people to work. Should I just make an appointment to go to the salon in the morning, and if she comes, she comes? Thanks!

Amber

I would say, “We would love it if you can come to our wedding, and I also wouldn’t want anyone else to do my hair!” See how she reacts and ask if she’d rather come do it for you at the hotel or have you make an appointment at the salon. I don’t think it’s insulting at all to have her do your hair since you’ve known her largely as a part of a vendor-client relationship anyway, so it’s not like asking your mom to perform some service for money or anything. I bet she’ll be flattered both that you want her to do your hair AND that you’re inviting her, so she’ll just take the morning off at the salon. I wouldn’t worry about inviting her mother and sister if you’re less close to them (you don’t invite all your friends’ mothers and sisters either!) since they should know you’re closer to her. Good luck!

My sister-in-law invited her hairdresser to her wedding bc she was also friends with her. I think she felt honored to do her hair for such a special occasion. Talk to her - she might offer to come over.

I think Bluebell has it right! But if she really has to shut down the whole salon while she’s gone, than what I would do is give her a huge tip… to help make up for her lost wages. She may refuse it, but either way… she’ll be touched.

Thanks everyone! It’s basically the same thing my fiance said yesterday!
