Introducing Tags

August 16th, 2006 @ 2:04 pm by Mrs. Bee

I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but a couple of days ago my brother in law installed tags!

Tags are like categories, but better - they’re more specific so you can find exactly what you’re looking for. For instance this post is tagged “announcements.” If you click on “announcements” at the end of this post, it’ll take you to all the posts that have been tagged with “announcements.”

If you mouse over the “tags” tab above, it’ll show the 50 most popular tags in a tag cloud, with the more popular ones in larger, darker font, like so.

If you click on the “tags” tab, it’ll take you to a page with all the tags we’ve ever created. Tags are also intuitive and find related posts based on what tags have been applied to a post, as you can see in the example below.

For now you’ll only see this “related posts” option in the comments section of each post, but we may eventually add it to the end of each post on the front page.

Now I just have to go back and manually tag over 2000 posts. shocked3.gif

This is a feature that I’ve been wanting to add for quite some time, because I always thought categories were too broad. What do you think of our new tags feature? Should we eliminate categories now, or is there a need for both?

Thanks once again to brother-in-law bee!
