No Dairy Before the Wedding

August 16th, 2006 @ 8:20 am by Mrs. Bee

I went to see my dermatologist yesterday, as I’ve already mentioned, because I have eczema and an unnatural obsession with getting skin cancer. When I was washing my face yesterday morning, I noticed that I had some small pimples on my forehead - the little bumpy kind that always seem to form in clusters. I don’t break out often but when I do, they’re usually the big, fat ugly ones - not little ones like these.

My dermatologist asked if I had made any recent changes, like dairy, to my diet that might have caused the breakout. I realized that I’ve been eating a lot of cereal and yogurt lately (in my attempt to be healthy and lose weight), and they’re both not part of my regular diet. She told me that Asians are especially susceptible to breakouts when they consume dairy, and yogurt is the number one culprit. She also asked if I ate oysters, which are high in iodine, and can also cause acne. If you know me, you know that I loooooove oysters. I’ve been eating them like once a week - if they weren’t meant to be eaten, why must they taste so good?!

This all sounded vaguely familiar as I recall avoiding dairy of any kind the month before my wedding, but the oyster thing was new to me. Perhaps the dairy avoidance worked (as I was not consuming oysters in mass quantities at that time) because I did have clear skin on my wedding day. So to all brides out there - you just might want to stay away from oysters, yogurt, milk, and cheese the weeks leading up to your wedding. I mean… it can’t hurt right? ;)

first off, you don’t need to lose weight girl! i’ve been eating a lot of yogurt lately, and oysters are my favorite! i’ll keep this in mind when my wedding is around the corner.

I think the main health benefit of consuming dairy products is getting calcium. So you could always reduce your dairy intake and opt for calcium-enriched products like orange juice or soy milk (the labels will say whether or not they’re calcium-fortified) or take calcium supplements.

Interesting! I had a mini breakout the other week–after I had eaten a fair amount of cheese *cue music here* duhn-dunh-DUH!

But how to give up the cheese I love?

Not to mention that dairy can make you gassy, and NO ONE wants that…especially on their wedding day! LOL!

i’d avoid shrimp as well.. they’re loaded in iodine! one suggestion too for brides who are worried about unsuspecting pimples popping up right before their big day, make an appt w/ your dermo! i have one scheduled just in case i get a nasty one. dermo’s can do a quick cortisone injection that will make that pimple go byebye!

i’m totally lactose intolerant, and i only now found a lactose-free milk that doesn’t just taste (and look!) like milky water. so i’ve been avoiding dairy since i was 18, but taking calcium supplements to get that needed nutrition. =D I get the Costco pack of Nature Made’s calcium tablets and I find that taking one of those and a one-a-day Woman’s is perfecto!

I use toothpaste too lol! Thanks for the info on what to avoid Mrs. Bee. Good thing I don’t like oysters anyway. But I LOVE LOVE LOVE cheese! Oh well.

Oh, recently my mom gave me this blemish stick thingy from Burts Bees. And it really works (at least for me). Here it is…
