Say Hello To My Little Friend…

August 16th, 2006 @ 1:18 pm by Mrs. Spider

Ladies and gentlemen, may I introduce to you, my little friend aka “HOLY SHIT LOOK AT MY RING”:

ring.jpg

(sorry the picture is a little blurry and please excuse my hairy fingers.)

Time is slipping through our hands like wet spaghetti noodles and we’re determined to knock off as many remaining tasks as possible. This week, we started shopping for wedding bands. None of the traditional bands I’ve tried fits flush with my E-ring so I’m considering a customized U-shape band:

ring2.jpg

For the first fews years, I plan on wearing both my E-ring and band together but eventually, especially after I have kids, I see myself just sporting the band. Will a U-shape band look funny on its own? I suppose I could get a traditional band later to wear on its own but then that wouldn’t be my original wedding ring whatevah1.gif. Hmm, what to do Sam I am?

What’s your take on U-shaped wedding bands?

You could split up the bling! Go engagement ring on the right hand and wedding band on the left.

i honestly hate the uband.
like you said if you had to wear it alone i think it would look very odd.
i like miss grasshoppers idea!

I think you should either a) wear them on separate hands or b) get a ring you can wear on its own as your “original” wedding band for the ceremony etc (whether or not it looks good with your engagement ring), and then also get a u-shaped band to wear with the engagement ring after the wedding. Then the only time you wouldn’t be wearing the “real” wedding ring is when you had the real engagement ring with the u-band so you’d always have at least one real sentimental ring on at a time!

what a beautiful ring! i also don’t like the uband so like the previous comments, it would be a good idea to get a regular band and wear it on the right hand, with the engagement ring on the left.

i actually like the uband. but i know that i’ll be wearing both my ering and my weddingband on my lh. but like the other peeps if you’re going to wear it sep then you should get a regular one and wear it on both hands.

but i have to admit, the uband and your ering would look so fantastic :)

I don’t like the uband at all. Maybe I’m just nuts, but it almost seems apologetic, “sorry my engagement ring won’t allow a traditiional band so here’s a funny-shaped one that’s as close to traditional as I can manage.” That’s the ring talking, btw. :-P

I totally understand where you’re coming from concerning sentimentality, so may I suggest: you could always get your uband (if you’re realy in love with the style) and then once you stop wearing your engagement ring on a regular basis, you can have the diamonds in the uband reset and the gold reused to make a more traditionally-shaped wedding ring–most jewelers can remake any piece of jewelry however you want. Or, you could get the uband and once you stop wearing the engagement ring, get another ring that fits into the curve of the uband (think concave + convex) that fils in the empty space and adds to the width–creating a solid-looking band that can still come apart when you want to wear your uband and engagement ring together.

Does that make any sense at all? I can draw a picture if I’m making people confused. :-P

this is some GOOD feedback. i’m not too crazy about the idea of wearing my e-ring or wedding band on the right hand though. but getting two bands (one tradtional, one U) might be the way to go.

Oh and the center diamond is round, the two side stones are heart shape (lub them) and there are smaller round stones around the band.

Yeah, I never really liked the U band for the same reason, it looks odd by itself. But together, they are fabulous. I also agree with Miss Bluebell, it’ll be a great idea! I have one question, are you all going to wear your e-ring on your Right hand during the wedding? I always liked seeing them slip the band on while she’s wearing the e-ring.

Miss Spider, we have very similar engagement rings and I had to have the wedding band custom made so that it would fit snugly around the e-ring and it looks so good with all that bling :-) I plan on wearing mine together at all times ;-) so that’s why I think it fits. If you want a picture, email me and I’ll forward it to you.

I was in a similar predicament– my e-ring is a vintage set asscher cut diamond. Here’s the thing– you have a gorgeous, antique style setting. It is stunning. If you take yourself back to then these styles were en vogue, NOBODY’S wedding band and engagement ring touched. It wasn’t the style. So I say, don’t worry about them lining up precisely and embrace the cool vintagey-ness of it all!

I love my diamond u-band! It really enhances the e-ring, I think. I had mine soldered together before the wedding since I knew I would never want to wear them separately. But I also bought a simple, inexpensive plain band along with DH’s from http://www.e-weddingbands.com, and brought it to the ceremony so the priest could bless all of the rings. It made the band very special and meaningful to me, too.

maybe you can get a *NEW* band when you have kids….as a celebration of life?

I’m pro u-band, for the reason that it looks good with your ring. However, alone, it looks crazy.

Since I already have kids, I can tell you that [the royal] we DO still wear our engagement rings. That may change for you, though, depending on your lifestyle.

i’m anti-u-band, and my e-ring won’t allow for a flush wedding band, either. i’m OK with the small gap there will be between the e-ring and wedding band…way more OK with that little gap than a u-band. the small gap doesn’t look too bad to me, and prevents the set from looking too matchy matchy.

Gorgeous bling bling!! I not to crazy of the u band. Getting a regular wedding band is better, what if u decide not to wear your e-ring from time to time. It will look funny just to wear the u band itself….Heh I want a upgarde on my e-ring now…just looking your e-ring

I wouldn’t do the U band…It looks awkward by itself. I’d do a regular wedding band, I think it’s ok if it’s not flush.

here’s what someone from my personal blog suggested:

…but if you go with the u-shape and plan on wearing without your e-ring in the future, you can always turn the ring around so it doesn’t look like a u-shape.

BRILLIANT~! buy a u-band with diamonds all around and then turn the U around when i go sans e-ring. pure genius- yeah?

LOL, I must be one of the few crazies on here! I also have a vintage e-ring (my grandmother’s) and got a very subtle u-band to go with it. I *loved* it by itself! Sadly, I had to solder them together because the e-ring was worn so thin on the bottom that I could have only worn them 6 mos. or so without soldering them together wihout risking damage.

So I say, try on the u-band and see if you like it! They are not all created equal; some really look like something is missing, while others may not have that feeling.

Could you get a double U-shaped band? So that if you flipped it upside down it would still wrap around your engagement ring? Then you could wear it on its own or with the ring.

To see what I mean, look at the picture, and consider if the U-band were melded with its reflection. Isn’t it lovely?

I think both rings are lovely; you are lucky to have such gorgeous pieces!

Your ring is lovely!!

As one who has been wearing the same rings every day for over 32 years it still gives me a little thrill to look down and see that diamond and band and remember the sentiment that goes behind it.

I hope you have great times ahead too!

ok, i’m gonna sound extreme old school here…

i guess i’m more of a traditional type when it coems to the shape of an engagement/wedding ring cos the ring symbolises a never ending union, hence, the round shape. so personally, uband might not cut it for me.

most of the wedded friends were telling me that after 10, 20 years, most of them wont be wearing the ring anymore bcos of various reasons (fingers grown fatter, prefer to wear it as a necklace cos it constraints handy work etc), so me and my FI’s take on the ring is, not goin 2 splurge on the rings, and we’ll just get a simple white gold band with our names engraved in the inner band. after all, its the symbol that matters! :)

Nice ring ;)
I’ve never been a fan of the U-shaped rings. And I think if you didn’t pair it with your engagement ring, it just might look a bit odd.
I’m going to get a platinum band to match FI’s, and not even worry about it. Heh.

I bought the most gorgeous gold U-ring at Bulgari a coupla months ago just to have and I wear it alone all the time and love it. But it’s an acquired taste I guess. I love it that it’s unique on it’s own. But you should see how they stack up together with e-ring + u-ring.

I like how my u-band looks by itself, too (it’s not plain, but all pave diamonds ALL over). And together… gorgeous. I didn’t want a plan band to cover up the e-ring band (also pave all over).

My sister-in-law has a U-band and it looks great with or without her giant e-ring. If my e-ring were big enough to warrant it, I would definitely go “U”.
