Online Save the Dates

August 17th, 2006 @ 1:51 pm by Mrs. Bee

CDD brought up an interesting idea in our beehive today about sending save the dates via email.

What do you think about sending email save the dates?

I think that emailing Save The Dates can work IF

1. There’s some effort put into it. Don’t just write “Save the date x/x/xx” in the message body. Attach a nice image and a link to your wedding website.

2. Your audience is familiar with the internet. Your older guests (like grandparents) may not appreciate an emailed Save-the-Date.

Sending our STDs via email was an especially good idea for us because most of our guests are in their mid-twenties- everyone was very familiar with the internet. Plus, since our friends are so young, they move around a lot (dorming, summer internships, changing jobs, moving in with new s.o., etc) so we would have had to bug everyone twice for their mailing addresses.

i think emailed std’s are fine, as long as you contact older guests some other way.

one good thing about them is that i hate typing url’s. there is nothing more irritating than getting a save-the-date card with a 50 character case-sensitive url.

as for guest who don’t use the internet, a phone call is nice if there aren’t too many.

wow… i’m so surprised at the results of the votes… i personally don’t think their tacky…

i thought it would be more 75% convenient & about 25% tacky… hmm…

I agree with Miss Ant, our save the dates went via email but they were professionally designed & match our actual invites. We also set up a wedding website which linked to the save the date, it has hotel info, directions, etc just in case. Our guests are pretty internet savvy so they’ve been received well.

We’re not doing them this way - but I see nothing wrong with it. I think sometimes we put too much pressure on each other about tact and appropriateness of decisions. This pressure leads to spending more money on things that may not be necessary in the long run.

As it is, I’m freaking out about paying for the wedding. I think if other brides find ways to save money, they should go for it.

I agree with Miss Ant. Think email STD are fine if your audience is computer/internet savvy. Unfortunately, this would only work for like 10% of my guest list.

I don’t think E-mail STDs are tacky at all. It’s not like you’re sending a wedding invitation by e-mail or something. Plus, it sounds like the most convenient way to gather mailing addresses from your guests.

I don’t think they’re tacky at all, either. But I think we’re going to do paper STD’s just because not everyone we’re inviting has immediate access to a computer, and it’d just be easier, in our minds…heh.

We’re doing paper STDs so we can get our magnets sent out, but I’ve already contacted a few key people via email with an informal, mini STD–just so they’re super aware!!!

About the huge complicated urls–you could always just use http://www.tinyurl.com for your guests’ sake, if your actual URL is super difficult :) . I’ve never tried using it in a formal setting before but it has often come in handy on forums and such.

My best friend did online STDs. I thought it was just fine. That’s probably what we’ll do too. Of course it’ll be nice to do actual paper ones. But that’s not one of my “have to haves” when it comes to wedding planning. I rather spend the $ on something else.

I’m all for email STD’s. It’s cheap and easy to do (maybe it’ll help you get the STD’s done earlier too.) And you can always have a few simple paper STD’s to send to the older folks who aren’t internet savy.

it worked just fine for us! we had one of our favourite engagement pictures scanned, added our names, date, and venue, turned it into a wallpaper, and email it out. we’ve got lots of great feeback and congratulatory notes from our friends and family after that!

I picked No Way…not because it’s tacky, but because most of my family is older and not email friendly.
