About Mrs. Violet

Shabby Chic

August 21st, 2006 @ 11:06 am by Mrs. Violet

I’m a big DIY girl, not just for my wedding, but with everything in general. If I see something I like, instead of going out to buy it, I try to make it myself. When I first thought about the overall planning for my wedding, I was adamant that I would do my own flowers because I believed I could learn floral arranging and save lots of money doing it. I didn’t really think it would be such a big deal doing the flowers myself but when I told my BM’s and others, they looked at me and reminded me that I was crazy.

The more I thought about it though and considered how crazy it would be to arrange flowers a day before my wedding, I conceded, well - sort of. A small part of me still wants to do it, but a bigger part of me knows it’s not worth the effort. I should be relaxed the day before and not panicking over creating the perfect bouquet!

So I’ve decided that I will seek outside help but before doing so, I plan on visiting the floral district in Manhattan next month just to see what flowers are available for my wedding. (It’s quickly approaching a year before the Big Day!!) If you have a year to plan your wedding, go out and see what flowers are available because those are obviously more affordable. Unless you have your heart set on certain flowers that aren’t seasonal, then go for it, but honestly, the guests won’t know the difference. Flowers are flowers, it’s about the overall attitude & atmosphere - not about how much you spent on flowers. I’m not going to stress out too much over that - I plan on leaving it up to my florist.

In the meantime, here are a few arrangements I really like.. I’m going for a vintage, charming, shabby chic look.

i love the first bouquet.

my advice to you, get someone else to do it. you don’t need to another thing to be worrying about on your wedding day. and, flowers are very important.

for my bf’s wedding, us BMs did all the flowers and it was quite tiring. there were 27 tables so we had to do the 27 centerpieces, 4 BM, that means 8 bouquets (1 extra set for the pictures the day b4), 4 huges vases (2 for front entrance, and 2 @ the main table). in the end we skipped the arch since we ran out of time. you have to take in consideration of storage space for the flower, all the vases you have to get, time arranging it (can’t have too much time b4 the wedding because it might wilt), how are to going to transport it to different locations (morning ceremony & reception site). at one point i was kinda upset that i didn’t have anytime to preparty w/ my bride b4 her big day.

let a professional take care of it. the extra $ you spend will worth the hassel, and your BMs will thank you since they will probably have to the the ones who would help you if you decide to go the DIY route.

also, if you haven’t done the seating chart by alphabetical order of first name, you should. it makes seating the guests so much easier than having to look through the list of all the tables to find their names.

Ha, i feel the same way about DIY. I still get little pangs of sadness when I think that I released my favors to a store to handle, but I suppose I don’t want to bake the day before the wedding!

That look is just what I’ll be after when I get married. I’ll prob have it in my parent’s garden so anything more ‘done’ would look ridiculous. I LOVE the herbs in the final bouque. Consider lavender sprigs as well as the rosemary and mint - it will smell so beautiful. I am currently in love with hydrangeas, cabbage roses, peonies and sweetpeas…!

You might consider part DIY, part pro, depending on what you want. I am doing my own centerpieces as I knew I wanted one kind of flower in a simple vase. I can also easily do the centerpieces a full day, or even two, in advance. Everything else goes to the pro, I don’t need the stress on the actual wedding day.

i love arranging flowers and have the same dilemma. a while back, my friend who love arranging flowers insisted that we do diy flowers for our wedding. i thought she was crazy!

but now, i can’t help but want to do everything myself. i love diy!… but i know it would be a crazy idea… how crazy?… we’ll have to see… *sigh*

Holly - You read my mind. I’m thinking of doing a single flower in a antique porcelain cup or milk jug. 2 per table (long table)

I was just talked out of doing my own flowers [though I'm still making probably 900 stems for bead picks on my own] by my FI. He knows that I’m an do-it-all-myself kind of girl, but he also knows about the wicked stress I’ve been under lately–so we compromised. I’m doing the bead picks for my bouquet and the tables, and the rest can be up to the florist.
