No Wardrobe Malfunctions, Please

My dress is in!!! laughing.gif

I *knew* it had arrived. I knew it. I actually ordered the dress more than 7 months ago at Kleinfeld and was anxiously waiting for their call… but they never called. So I called them instead, and surely enough, my dress had passed their quality control inspection and is just a few subway stops away, ready for me.

Unfortunately, Kleinfeld charges a flat fee of $450 for alterations. And as excited as I am to reunite with my dress, I am not so enthusiastic about parting with $450.

I am almost certain that I can save a few hundred bucks by getting my dress altered elsewhere. The dress should need minimal alterations, especially considering that the size I ordered (same as the sample size) fits me very well and there is no beading, lace, or embellishments on the material.

The alterations will probably include:
1. hemming the front,
2. lowering the V-back a few inches,
3. possibly adding bra cups, and
4. possibly adding a bustle.

Then, as I was researching alternative alteration options, I came across some horror stories. This bride blogged about her frustrating experiences with a tailor in the Upper East Side that actually specializes in bridal alterations. Another bride (sorry, you have to sign in to view) blogged about how her well-established Midtown bridal salon actually ruined her dress just a few days before her wedding!

To make a long story short, I go in for my second fitting and the dress is completely fucked up. They sent it out of the store to another seamstress because they were too busy to do it (??) and they fucked it up so much they couldn’t fix it. They cut off too much material… I was about to completely lose it yesterday. They had to give me another dress. So now, I got a completely different dress - it’s a classier and more elegant style, but of course not the style I orginally wanted. This dress was already in my size and they had it in stock so they are doing the alterations in one day. I’m getting it tomorrow- it’d better be PERFECT. The incompetence is astounding.

So now I don’t know what to do anymore! Please help!

Where should I have my dress altered?

  • Kleinfeld- The $450 flat fee is expensive, but worth it for the quality service. And in the unlikely scenario that the dress is ruined, they can do something about it (like providing a different dress).
  • Elsewhere- You can and should definitely save a couple hundred by having your dress altered elsewhere. There are risks, but those worst case scenarios are highly unlikely. Plus, your alterations are minimal, whereas one of the above horror stories involved rips and beading.

Also, can anyone recommend some excellent tailors in Manhattan, preferably one with experience with wedding gowns?

OhMY, I can’t imagine (and DON’T want to!) what I would do if someone fucked up my dress! Can you sue in a situation like that? Because EVEN if they give you a new dress, you still do go through a lot of anguish and stress, plus, it’s not like the new dress is your ORIGINAL pick!

I think I would go with Kleinfields, just because I wouldn’t want to take ANY risks with my dress.

The alteration fee is now $575 at Kleinfeld’s!! I went last Saturday and thought i was being ripped off but a coworker of mine went there as well recently and was quoted the same price. Insane! She told me that Mark Ingram charges similar prices and even told her they would have to charge her an extra $200 because she has a broad back (WTF???). I bought my dress at Kleinfeld’s and was thinking of going else for alterations as well but don’t want to risk it.

wow! ever time i read about how things cost in NYC, i’m so amazed at how inflated everything is!

honestly, i feel like either choice is a gamble because even if you go to kleinfeld’s, there’s no guarantee that they’ll actually alter the dress themselves. the ONLY positive is that if they mess it up, then they would have to do something about it - whether that be fix it to your satisfaction or replace it…

… but $575 for alterations is out of control. makes me really really glad i live in chicago. my alterations: shorten the hem in the front, take in the bodice at the top, add a bustle = $120.

i’m going with an independent tailor, but i only chose her because a friend highly recommended her - she’s an expertly trained seamstress from korea… not only is she cheap, but she’s super fast. i had my fitting on saturday, and she will have it done in 1 week for the final fitting to do the bustle.

Uhm, $575 is what I spent on my gown. I can’t imagine paying the same cost for alterations.

Thank goodness I don’t live in NYC.

peachy, I live in Manhattan and it still amazes me how everything is so inflated! Urg. I am so envious of your fabulous $120 alteration fee. So so envious.

I also wanted to comment that Kleinfeld has an amazing team of seamstresses, as Miss Ladybug and many other brides can attest to. They pride themselves on their service. I would speculate that the risk of having something go wrong with my dress is extremely low if I go with Kleinfeld…. It’s just so darn inflated, it bothers me so much!

Wow, this one is so evenly divided. There have been 114 votes and it’s still 50/50. Yikes…

While my seamstress did a great job at Kleinfeld it was so difficult and by the end her negative tude was very apparent. It was not pleasant and if I had to do over I would have specifically requested a seamstress instead of them assigning me on or would have gone elsewhere.
